**Crowd besiege Nigerian Railway over Osun’s free train ride

Beneficiaries express satisfaction, ask other states to emulate

Thousands of holiday makers traveling to Osun, Kwara, Kogi states, and other parts of the country, have besieged the Iddo Terminus of the Nigerian Railway Corporation as the free eid-il-kabir festival free train ride provided by the government of Osun state entered its second day in Lagos. The free train initiative of the Osun state government was to help people travelling home for the Eid-il Kabir festival. But indigenes of neighbouring states have also taken the opportunity to get to various destinations when they arrive in the state capital, Osogbo.

A statement signed by the Commissioner of Commerce, Cooperatives and Empowerment, Ismail Adekunle Jayeoba-Alagbada, said the train rideis to facilitate stress-free travelling for the people, who are coming home for the festival. The free train ride, which spans five days, commenced on Saturday 12, 2013. For the journey to Osogbo, the train would take off from Iddo Terminus, Lagos, at 11 o’clock daily on Saturday 12th, Sunday, and Monday 14th.

The return trip to Lagos, according to the statement, is fixed for Thursday 17th and Saturday 19th as the train would depart Osogbo at 11 o’clock daily. Mr Jayeoba-Alagbada said the government embarked on the initiative in the past three years to reduce the stress people go through during Easter, Eid –il Fitri, Eid –il Kabir and Christmas festivals.

“We hope our people, wherever they are coming from, Oyo, Ogun or Lagos, would make maximum use of this gesture of the government and promptly too. This is a sign that government has the welfare interests of the people at heart and would not detract from providing same as and when required,” Mr Jayeoba-Alagbada said.

A passenger, Idiat Oladosu, who said she was travelling to Oro, Kwara State, said it was a good opportunity for her to reduce her cost of travelling. Ganiyu Alimi, an indigene of Inisa in Odo Otin Local Government Area of the state, said he had been enjoying the free train ride since the inception of the Aregbesolas’ administration.

Awololo Samson, said though he is not a Muslim coming for any festival, he joined the train in Lagos to arrive in Osogbo on his way to Lokoja as he believed that would reduce his cost of travelling.

utumunta: ** Nigeria: Railway Corporation Flags Off Lagos-Ibadan-Ilorin Transit Scheme

By Yemi Bamidele, 31 October 2011

By Yemi Bamidele, 31 October 2011

Ibadan — The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) weekend flagged off the Lagos-Ibadan-Ilorin mass transit scheme.

A train, which departed Iddo Station in Lagos around 9.00 a.m. arrived Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, at 2.00 pm

NRC Western District Manager Engr. Folorunso Rasheed Gbadamosi, who spoke to newsmen in Ibadan while receiving the locomotive at Dugbe station, said the restored express service would continue to be run on schedule.

Specifically, he disclosed that the North-south express rail services would be fully restored within the first quarter of 2012 on completion of the rehabilitation of the Akere Bridge in Niger State.

Gbadamosi, who was visibly excited about the re-launching of the railways inter-city service, noted that the new scheme was being commenced with the Iddo-Ilorin express service and would be run every Friday "while there will also be return journey from Ilorin to Iddo station in Lagos every Sunday".

According to him, "the corporation is able to achieve the new feat following the successful handing over, for both freight and passenger services, of the rail track route between Ibadan and Ilorin that has been under rehabilitation for quite some time by the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), the contractor handling the project.

"In the light of the handing over, we are now commencing Iddo-Ilorin passenger express train. The train which has 90 passengers on each coach of six will be running to schedule every Friday of the week while there will also be return journey fom Ilorin-Iddo in Lagos every Sunday".

Gbadamosi added that the corporation had already commenced weekly haulage of 600 metric tons of cement to Osogbo, the Osun State Capital, with the first consignment arriving destination on Thursday evening.

"Arrangement has equally been concluded to ensure the commencement of another weekly haulage of 600 metric tons to Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, in two weeks' time. And the corporation would not rest on its oars until full resumption of freight and passenger services is restored on all its routes across the nation", he assured.

On the security of the passengers, he noted that the corporation had put in place Railway District Police Officers and Man O' War in all its districts

The above was the report that announced the COMMENCEMENT of railway services on that route AFTER rehabilitation of the the line by President Jonathan.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and ALL its facilities belong to the Federal Govt. No amount of spamming from Osun Defender can change that. The railways are inter-state networks and no state govt has any role to play in either their construction, rehabilitation or maintenance. I had to make this clarification so that LIARS and shameless hypocrites will not deceive the children that also visit this forum.

Lagos State is building its own intra-city railway. If Aregbe and his worshippers on this forum desire a railway of their own, they have enough land in Osun where they can build a new railway. It is dumb and foolish to try to use Osun Defender to tell wicked LIES, claim ownership, control or investment in the NRC.

What kind f silly and rretarded question is this? It's like saying states we can have their own power transmission grid when in fact it's still against the law for such to happen?

Why not first tell the dullard to let go the rail system and see what we can do?

In fact, shouldn't common sense tell you that for the man to spend his state's money on locomotives and coaches and even pay the useless and worthless federal government to repair their own stations in Osun, he 's capable of making a huge difference given the right and opportunity to do so unlike the clowns in Abuja spending billions every year on Ogbanje 1925 coaches that can not move cargo from Lagos to Kano without dying.

THIS IS JUST FOR THE RECORD

I recently read this Article by chance, and its Significance hits me immediately.

Here, the NORTHERN Daily trust Editorial Team, through this Editorial, made a HUGE TURN-AROUND by finally admitting remarkable Progress by the GEJ Administration in the Railways Sector, although of course saying that more work needed to be done- in fact, the title of their Article is "Don't Derail these Projects"!! What is significant here is that just 1 or 2 months ago, this same Daily trust (like the many HATERS, never-seen-well, Blind and HYPOCRITICAL 'opposition' CLOWNS and their unfortunate IGNORANT 'Victims'- they know themselves here on NL) said that the claims of Govt on developments in this Sector was a Lie. They said that this Govt was 'NOT DOING ANYTHING'. They said that SURE-P is a Fraud(esp this Paper). They called those of us who were tryin to point certain things out names. Today, on Railways, they are beginning to sing a new song cos the LIES are becoming too damn hard to repeat. The TRUTH is now forcing its way out, steadily.

Like it is in the Railways, so it recently is becoming in the Aviation and Agriculture Sectors. So it is beginning to be in Power Sector(and, this is the BIG one of course). So it would be in many other Sectors, eventually.

Like I always say here: na dem go TIRE. Na dem go talk truth with their mouths, eventually. Na dem go Confess.

The Goodluck Jonathan administration touts the re-emer-gence of train services in the country as one of its major achievements in the last two years. The rail sector in this country has indeed been in a comatose state for nearly two decades, despite talks-and failed efforts-by previous administrations of reviving the sector.

Even though the trains recently seen on the rail lines are nowhere near what things were in the past, it is nevertheless something to be hopeful that progress is now being made in the revival of this key transport sector, which would have a revolutionizing effect on the national economy and society once it is fully revived and modernised.

The rail revitalization project, as outlined recently by Transport Minister Senator Idris Umar, is part of a 25-year programme to rehabilitate, modernize and stabilize rail transport in Nigeria. This ‘strategic vision for railway development’ includes the rehabilitation of existing narrow gauge lines, construction of standard gauge lines and linking all state capitals by rail, much like the Trunk A road system. When fully achieved, the impact that these could have on the national economy would be tremendous.

So far, there are signs of progress in this plan, though a lot still needs to be done. It is perhaps in this sector that intervention by SURE-P has been most noticeable. According to Umar, so far 90 percent of the existing 3,505kms of narrow gauge rail line in all parts of the country are at various stages of rehabilitation. As a result, the Western rail corridor of Lagos-Kano saw the kick-off of passenger and freight services in December last year while rail services are expected to kick off in the Eastern corridor of Port Harcourt-Maiduguri by year’s end.
Currently, intra-state mass transit rail services have begun in Lagos, Kaduna and Kano-Challawa routes, while inter-city passenger services operate in Lagos-Ibadan, Kaduna-Minna, Kaduna-Kafanchan and Kano-Nguru. An Offa-Kano Express Train Service is also started. Rehabilitation of Apapa port rail line has been completed while other ports are to be linked by rail. In the last two years, Nigeria’s rail carried 4 million passengers and 561,000 tonnes of cargo. This is a small figure compared to what things were decades ago; but it is an encouraging sign at least that the traffic may improve.
This country has been proposing the building of a standard gauge rail line for four decades now. The plan was actually incorporated into the Third National Development of 1975-1980 but was never done. This time, construction of the 187km Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge line is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of next year, according to the government’s projection. Construction of the 274km Lagos-Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri standard gauge line is 80% complete while Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge work was recently started as part of what the Transport Ministry said is a long-term Lagos-Kano standard gauge line. All these projects are welcome signs that there is positive movement in the rail sector for the first time in two decades.

In recent weeks, controversy has trailed the award of contracts for conducting feasibility studies for the national network of standard gauge lines. The purpose of the feasibility studies, as government officials explained, is to attract private investors under the terms of a Private Public Partnership [PPP] project. This is understandable because the costs involved and the demands of other equally important sectors. The studies will establish the technical, economic and viability models of the projects; provide proposals for alignment and connections to urban and commercial settlements and identify potential train stations and workshops all leading to submission of preliminary and final engineering designs.
The problem, as critics have alleged, is that these rail feasibility studies contracts were on the high side, even though officials have explained that they were advertised in 2011, that the bids were evaluated by SURE-P, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission and Transport Ministry; the Bureau of Public Enterprises [BPP] issued ‘no objection’ certificates before the Federal Executive Council approved them. However, such controversy should not derail these all-important national projects. If there are corrections to be made, the National Assembly through its relevant committees should step in to examine them. In all cases the rail modernization programme should be pursued as a top national priority. Much of Nigeria’s future economic and social life rests on it.

You people just think and reason like elementary school kids for real..
Ur insults ridden comments most of d time wit no facts clearly shows ur personality traits. While I'l not join issues wit u, I av 2 reply dis post cos of sth u inferred in d above quote. If u'r saying its illegal 4 state govts 2 own/consruct rail lines, why is d ongoing Lagos-Badagry xpressway ( a Lagos state govt project) aving a light rail component?
