For some people, living a single life is full of fun and freedom, but it has some serious side effects that one can't afford to ignore. A new study has revealed that people who do not have their other half could have serious health issues and might die much earlier.

According to the study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, single men have higher risk of death (32 percent) than married men across a lifetime, compared to single women, whose risk of death is 23 percent higher than married women.

To make it simpler, in the worse-case scenario, single men could die eight to 17 years earlier than their married counterparts, while single women could die seven to 15 years earlier than their married peers.

Researchers at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, analyzed 90 previous studies that were conducted on the subject over the past 60 years. The studies included around 500 million people. Divorced or widowed people were not considered as single people, researchers said.

One of the key areas the research emphasized on was the fact that compared to single men, single women had higher life expectancy rate.

The report showed just how poorly the singles do, said David Roelfs, assistant professor of sociology at the university. With the concurrent decline in public assistance, health benefits and the family wage in Western societies, single women are more economically and medically marginalized now than in previous years and are therefore at a higher risk for health problems and early death.

Married couples tend to have stronger support network around them, while single people, even if there are parents, family and friends for them, have less social support by default, Roelfs said.

However, for those people, who survive a single youth, risk of death dramatically decreased during their later stage of life. The risk of death for 30 to 39-year-old singles was 128 per cent higher than married people of the same age. On the other hand, 70-year-old singles had only 16 percent higher risk of death.

The report should have said "happily married people" because some marriages are 'death sentence'. Meanwhile, they need to carry out the study in naija too, where some married men sleep in bars, and wives sleep at vigils bc of problems at home, some married people even gallivant around more than single people, where the fastest-moving biz in some cities is hotel biz that offer quickie services... grin Marriage is sweet if u make a wise & right choice, otherwise na battle field for some.

O.k how about people who were living fine while single but once they got married, they had miserable lives and eventually died in the process?? This isnt Fiction. True life stories. How about that Huh?? Apart from age been the contributing factor, Why is high b.p and stroke cases higher among the married than the singles? I dnt know about you but i am enjoying my singlehood ooo. This study is relative and cannot be absolutely True.

I have read something similar to the report. It probably was based on the average married person and single person. So it doesn't mean every married person has a higher chance.

This is quite well known. And to my mind pretty much axiomatic.

All this study - actually it's composite study of 90 others - does is condense the empirical research. Hard to argue with really. And no, it doesn't apply to every unique case of marriage or discrete instance of singleness, but really there is no gainsaying in principle.

I both agree with and personally experience the health benefits of being married. Marriage viewed solely as an agreement, can appear to favour women more, this highlights why, whatever the general or individual balance, it's typically for a mans long-term good as well.

It's also worth noting that the marriage does not have to be deliriously happy for the benefits to accrue. Just as long as conflict is low-level and contained. Marriage still remains the best domestic arrangement for women - and perhaps even more importantly, any offspring.

Talking of suicide, the Christmas period can be a very lonely time - especially in the West - and there is typically a spike in suicide cases during this period. It's good to keep an eye open and perhaps reach out to any vulnerable people you know. Even the merest of gestures can go a long way in relieving unbearable feelings of loneliness or dark thoughts.

Empirically observed, fact based, encouraging - what's not to like? Good one.

Sagamite how far na? Check out the benefits of marital life and put head quick-sharp - with the right spouse of course grin!

Tell me about it. spending Christmas Day alone can be quite lonely.

Loneliness is really the issue here I think.Being lonely can be very depressing. There was eveb a study in the Uk that found that people who go to church and socialise with people in a 'familial' setting tend to live longer too.And I don't think this study was faith based (na UK now grin) more like the social and psychological effects.
