Redemption, consolidation on offer

Nigeria sent a stern warning to the rest of the competition here at the FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE 2013 when they devastated holders Mexico in their first game in Al Ain, and the Golden Eaglets are back in action to confirm their tag as tournament favourites when they meet Sweden at the Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium on Tuesday. Also on the card is a clash of teams looking to reestablish their credentials when Mexico take on Iraq. Over in Dubai, Canada are hunting an historic win in Group E, where all four teams are tangled on one point after a pair of opening-day draws.

Match of the day

Sweden-Nigeria
Group F’s leaders meet in a mouth-watering clash as Nigeria, aiming to become champions of the U-17 category for a record fourth time, try to keep up their smashing form. The Swedes were patient and clinical in their 4-1 opening rout of Iraq, Elias Andersson and Gustav Engvall combining well on a pair of goals. But their challenge will be dramatically stiffer up against the Golden Eaglets who manhandled Mexico 6-1 in their opener. And with the four-goal sensation Kalechi Iheanacho to try and wrangle, the Scandinavians – having a good go of it so far in their first-ever U-17 world finals – are sure to have their hands full.

Player to watch
After one matchday in Al Ain, there is one player in particular to keep an eye one, especially if you’re a member of the Swedish defence. Kalechi Iheanacho was dominant in Nigeria’s rout of Mexico, scoring four times and putting in a performance far more nuanced and mature than his 17 years would suggest. “We have to have the courage and determination to keep going,” he told FIFA.com after soaring to the top of the scorer’s charts.

Manu: Same approach for
Sweden

After seeing his wards dismantle Mexico
6-1 on Saturday, Nigeria Under-17 coach
Manu Garba says the approach to the
game will not change against Sweden.

Garba, whose Total Football left the defending
champions cross-eyed, insists there will be no
question of underrating the Europeans when
the Nigerian cadets return to the Khalifa Bin
Zayed Stadium on Tuesday to face the
debutants from Europe.

“There is no and won't be any easy game at
this tournament and we are not going to
underrate Sweden because we beat Mexico
6-1," he said.
"We are going to approach the match against
Sweden with the same manner as we did
against Mexico because our objective is to win
the fourth title for Nigeria.”
He said the convincing win against the
Mexicans was not unexpected given the
pedigree of the team overtime.
“The victory against Mexico is not going to
have a negative impact on my players because
they know what they have to do,” he
maintained.
“This is not the first time we are beating a
team by such a high margin.
“We had beaten teams by 11-0 score line back
home, so it is nothing new to us to score so
many goals against the Mexicans.
“We are looking forward to the next game
against Sweden knowing well that all the
teams at this championship are here based on
merit,” he added.
The Golden Eaglets returned to training
Sunday evening as they continued their
preparations for their next match.

Golden Eaglets striker Kelechi Iheanacho has
revealed that his goal celebration was inspired
by his favourite wrestler Daniel Bryan.
Iheanacho scored four goals in Nigeria’s 6-1
defeat of Mexico in the UAE 2013 FIFA
Under-17 World Cup in Al Ain City on
Saturday.
Iheanacho raced to corner flag whenever he
scored, raised and pumped his arms,
extending his fingers to the heavens. His
knees followed along in rhythm to celebrate
his goals.
“This is the celebration move of my favourite
professional wrestler,” Iheanacho told
FIFA.com.
Bryan is this Nigerian boy’s favourite wrestler,
a bearded American from the outskirts of
Seattle who occasionally goes by the moniker,
the American Dragon.
“I watch him on TV and I love the way he
whips up the crowd this way, so I decided to
copy it. The fans seemed to like it, too,” he
added.
“I was totally over the top with joy when that
first goal went in.”
He said his goals against defending
champions Mexico on Saturday marked the
first time he would score that number of
goals in an international match.
“I’ve scored four goals in a game many times,
but only in the streets with my friends,” the
striker said.
“But (it has) never (been) in an international
match, never for my country. The feeling is
amazing.
“Sure, it’s a big win in our first game. We
have to have courage now and determination
to keep going, to go all the way.”
Nigeria’s next group game will be against
Sweden on Tuesday, while their last group tie
will be against Iraq three days later.
Nigeria currently top their group with three
points from one match, with Sweden who
were 4-1 winners over Iraq on Saturday
behind them in second place.
