Were you apart as a result of breakup or circumstances made you to live in separate areas? Whatever the case you will inform him but d mood and timing matters. if it was breakage, mend and blend well before telling him but if it is separation by circumstance then you need to gauge his mood and find a time when you will "subltly" break the ice after assuring him of not to repeat the act as well as identified the root cause and possible remedies

This is a dicey situation, since you have a felling that he might one day find out, I think you should find a way to tell him and proof to him that its not gonna happen again, if he should hear it from someone else, its gonna hurt him more than hearing it from you, be careful and pray about it.
