Yes sir, it is. Please read through the thread for one of my posts where I discussed AGIS in Abuja. I'm kind of busy presently but I promise to give you a run down very soon. I currently have a couple of Urban and Regional Planning students from FUTA and The Polytechnic Ibadan undergoing training in our office. GIS is basically for the Environmental Sciences but recently it is been employed in almost all spheres of life including Marketing Logistics.

Urban planning (urban, city, and town planning) is a
technical and political process concerned with the use of land and design of the urban environment, including
transportation networks, to guide and ensure the orderly
development of settlements and communities. It concerns
itself with research and analysis, strategic thinking,
architecture, urban design, public consultation, policy
recommendations, implementation and management. Taylor and Nigel,(2007). Many of our planners still depend on analogue or paper maps while few have upgraded to using one of the numerous AutoCAD land development software. While this is a welcome development, there is the need to look into the future and by future I mean what other countries are already implementing. Intelligent planing of our cities is intrinsic
to the development of our nation. Ofcourse the AutoCAD brings about a digital outlook to the planing world, Yes, AutoCAD makes drawing easier. As a GIS expert, I agree! I have used the AutoCAD software severally and its awesome but GIS is a system, it gives your work a spatial reference. You can stay in your office and measure the distance between a particular bank to the nearest filling station anywhere in the world without blinking an eye. You can run a cluster analysis to show you the spatial distribution of let's say filling stations in a particular area ( filling stations aren't even meant to be in some areas) a buffer which is commonly referred to as setback can be analyzed to give firsthand information on how buildings are located along our roads or rivers. Network analysis will come in handy to predict Traffic flow and congestion. Apart from these very interesting analysis, GIS affords you a very robust database of all features that may or may not interest you as a planner. GIS gives you an edge, it helps you make intelligent decisions.
N.B: Apologies for the scattered write up, like I said work has been hectic but I had to expose URP students and experts alike to the benefits of GIS. Thanks

-For starters, you really need to be grounded in the technology because the GIS expert sells his ideas not the technology, you only use the technology to process and present your ideas.
-Know your target market- everybody including govt, coys and even the academic is a potential market, it all depends on the approach.
-Be smart, resourceful and improve on your analytical and problem solving skills.
-Package your self, look official, be confident and always smile.
-Establish or join a GIS networking blog to update yourself.
All that I have discussed above will help you succeed in GIS freelancing, but since you don't have a good knowledge of GIS yet, going into the details might bore you.
Billing depends on the project and how far the client is willing to go. If the client is bringing the required data then the fee can be reduced (although most clients don't).
There is no minimum fee for a GIS project, I have billed a client just 25k and I have also charged considerably higher even when I was a part time GIS guy. I have colleagues who have executed multi-million naira projects. Have you gotten my mail?

Hello Guys! I must say that I am quite impressed with the way this thread is turning out. I created one thread on the Jobs/Vacancies section where I hoped to expose job seekers to how they can make a living as a GIS specialist but the Mods due to reasons best known to them, moved it out of the section. I have received over 20 mails from people who wish to undergo our basic GIS course, thus I wish to state that for those of you on this thread ALONE who are currently students and wish to undergo the training, we are offering a 20% discount.
