UNN researcher secures patent for development of solar cells from weed
A researcher in the Department of pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry,
University of Nigeria Nsukka, Justus Nwaoga, has been granted the patent right
for the sole use and advantage of inventing the development of Mimosa
Pudica, locally known as “touch and die weed” into solar cells.
The patent seal, signed by the Registrar of Patents and Design, and dated 10th
October, 2013, read in part, “whereas a request for the grant of a patent has
been made by Justus Nwaoga, Pharmaceutical Chemistry of Department of
UNN, for the sole use and advantage of invention for: Exploring the solar
sensitivities of Mimosa Pudica-An African wild plant, and whereas the Federal
Government of Nigeria, being willing to encourage all invention which may be for
the public good is pleased to accede to the request”.
Nwaoga discovered how to use Mimosa pudica, to generate renewable energy.
“I observed that the plant’s leaves opened at sunrise and folded at sunset, I
started searching for the compound responsible for this and found ‘black
silicon’ which can be used to power solar panel. It is natural”, he said.
He explained that solar cells constructed with the weed extracts and exposed to
sunlight were found to accumulate solar energy which was transformed to
electrical energy. The stored electrical energy, according to him could be
subsequently developed for various domestic, military and industrial appliances
including solar rechargeable lantern.
The invention had earned Nwaoga a place among ten best innovators in Africa
at the 2nd edition of the “Innovation Prize for Africa” held in South Africa in
May, 2013. Nwaoga’s innovation was the only one pioneered by a Nigerian
which made the top ten out of a total of 903 applications from 45 countries in
Africa.
It will also be recalled that the pharmacist had, in 2004/2005, developed a
portable kit used to discover fake and substandard injection drugs. The kit uses
chemicals instead of UV/visible spectrophotometer, a more expensive instrument
for spot test, to isolate and quantify main ingredients of gentamicin injection
and other commonly administered injections.

Oh Ndigbo, if not dat Nigeria has drawn us backwards, only God knows where we would have been by now if we had a country of our own. Some people might need a million yrs to catch up with us.

Anyways, God bless Ndigbo and bless Nigeria too.

This is quite impressive, and has a lot of potential.
Talk about alternative energy.
Kudos, Mr Nwaoga!

This is one of the reasons I had wanted Nigeria to disintegrate. I am tired and sick of being a compatriot to the multitude of basement scallywags that do not the meaning of corruption. It would be nice for a section of the former Nigeria to embrace and enjoy a moment like Justus Nwaoga while other sections continue to arrogate err of relevancy to themselves.

I dont care what my fellow yorubas say about mt submission. Igbos are gifted technology wise. The civil war was an eye opener. They were able to keep the federal might at bay for two and a half years; mainly depending on local technology. One of such civil war inspired technology was ogbunigwe; the home made bomb that dealt the nigerian army a deadly blow at the nsukka front and several other fronts. I wondee why igbos are yet to help transform nigeria technologically all these years. Or are you guys waiting for Biafra? I dont want that to come to pass the same way i dont want oduduwa or arewa republic to happen at all. If it ever happens, believe me qw are gonna miss one another! We will never realize what we mean to one another until break up actually occurs.
I still believe that the hausa man or the igbo man is not my enemy. The joint enemy we all have is corruption. Instead of thinking of breaking up, let's rather unite to fight this menace called BAD GOVERNANCE AND CORRUPTION! Do u think breaking up will make each constiituent better and free from corruption? Well, i dont think so
