Weight fluctuations are common as we get older. For most individual’s child birth, work life and schedules – especially in a stressful environment like Lagos, can cause weight gain. A lot of women gain weight due to hormonal imbalance and a poor diet. For those who have managed to keep slim, here are some guidelines to keeping slim for life.

RULE 1
Eat more often but in smaller portions. For example, if you normally eat 2 handfuls of rice and beans you can reduce this to 1 hand of rice and of beans. Another example is if you eat in a restaurant a plate of potatoes, vegetables and chicken you should eat half the amount of potatoes and remove the skin of the chicken and eat one-third the quantity of the chicken and take the rest home.

RULE 2
Tread the following foods with caution as they trigger weight gain very quickly.
• Rice: tends to have a high amount of starch in it with the exception of Ofada rice.
• Pasta
• Fried potatoes and fried yam
• Ice cream: these are dense in sugar and calories
• Pizza
• Cake: even low fat cake
• Chocolate: even fat free chocolate is risky, since it has too much sugar.
• Excessive bread: eating bread is okay but too much bread should be avoided. Two slices of bread are good enough.
• Cookies: even low fat biscuits are fattening, then are very rich in sugar)
• Pastries: various baked foods made of dough or batter

RULE 3
Try and eat the foods listed below. These foods are high in fibre and have fat burning properties. The more of these foods you eat would not add to your waistline.
• Green beans
• Apples
• Onions
• Pear
• Spinach
• Cucumber
• Tomatoes
• Grapes
• Oranges
• Lentils
• Lettuce
