THEY look like a combination of underwear and bike shorts, but their New York developers believe this "wearable protection" could protect women from rape.American firm AR(anti-rape) Wear is currently crowd-sourcing support for its range of anti-rape underwear, running shorts and eventually travel shorts, which purport to frustrate sexual assault attempts by being almost impossible to remove.
The concept is based on research which suggests that resisting rape reduces the risk of rape without increasing the risk of violence.
In its pitch on fundraising site Indiegogo, AR Wear writes, "They need to be resistant to pulling, tearing and cutting while being comfortable to wear during normal activities and, as in the case of underwear, fit smoothly under form-fitting outer clothing"
It works - according to AR Wear - by creating a "skeletal structure" inside the pants, along with straps around the legs and waist that can be locked in place. The new anti rape short called AR Wear doesn't send electric shocks like previous anti rape products, rather it frustrates the would-be rapist by making it difficult to remove either by force or
stealth (in situations where the victim cannot resist because she has had too much to drink, was drugged, or is asleep).
The waist, thighs, and central panels of the shorts are protected with specially designed, cut resistant straps and webbing.
Once the waist strap has been adjusted and locked with its unique locking device, the garment cannot be pulled down. As well as the straps at the thighs.
The thigh straps, after an initial adjustment by the wearer, prevents the leg openings from being lifted or shifted to the sides by someone else.
