NIGERIA may have put this year’s episode of the Television Reality Show, Big Brother Africa, in jeopardy following its insistence on rejecting the broadcast of the three months programme in any part of the country.

The House of Representatives had in 2007 placed a ban on the TV Reality Show beamed across the world from South Africa and sponsored by Muti-Choice Communications in protest against the heavily salacious images known with Big Brother Africa.

The ban came about following a motion sponsored by the House of Representatives Committee on Communications headed by Honourable Dino Melaye seeking to block the broadcast of the programme from the Nigerian air space.

The motion had complained against the permission of nudity of among House mates in Big Brother, even as the inmates had the free will to engage in sexual acts, a practice considered by the lawmakers as “barbaric, obscene, unethical and un-African.

The outrage expressed by members of the House against Big Brother Africa emanated from the manner by which a Nigerian girl; Ofuneka, was defiled after being lured into a lurid sexual with the influence of alcohol by a fellow House mate, even as the images of the sexual act were broadcast live and watched in many Nigerian homes.

Ofuneka, considered as having the brightest chances of winning the prize in Big Brother scad came second at the end of the TV reality show, prompting Nigerians who were familiar with the trend of award tricks by Big Brother to accuse the organizers as utterly biased.

Some Nigerians believed that the orgy of sexual act thrown in the way of Ofuneka was the reason she could not win the $100,000 prize offered by the sponsors, as the man who lured her into committing the open sin eventually carted home the entire amount.

A Nigerian who participated in an earlier version of Big Brother before Ofuneka also fell short of winning the $100,000 cash prize having came closer to doing so. That had prompted the audience in Nigeria to believe that the Big Brother is all about regional politics.

Not happy with its inability to air the next episode of Big Brother in Nigeria, Multi-Choice Communications had however, begun intense lobbying around the corridors of power with intent to committing the authorities into accepting to lift the ban on the broadcast.

The House of Representatives had however, agreed to lift the ban on the airing of Big Brother, but with a clause that it should not allow any salacious or sexual scene among the House mates, a condition which Multi-Choice appeared not keen about accepting.

The communication company had from the start of this week, intensified lobby in convincing the House of Representatives members from releasing the Nigerian air space for the broadcast of the TV reality show.

Speaking with Saturday Tribune, the House Committee Chairman on Communication, Honourable Dino Melaye, said Nigeria would not change its mind on the ban.

He reiterated that the programme could only be aired in the country provided Multi- Choice would leave out unethical scenes including open cuddling, nuzzling, smoking and sexual acts by House mates.

The argument by the sponsors of Big Brother Africa for not accepting that condition, Saturday Tribune learnt was that the essence of the reality show would have been defeated if such licentious scenes were left out.

The reality show was initially scheduled to begin last month as advertised, whereas the delay in the broadcast has been the making of the mindset of the government of Nigeria on the broadcast. Nigeria is considered the biggest catchment for the television programme by Multi-Choice.

Their argument, as far as i'm concerned, holds NO water.

Nobody is being forced to watch the show, it has a dedicated channel and has an age restriction. DStv decoders have a PG feature which can be enabled at will. The broadcast of the "daily show" by Local TV stations can be banned, but leave me and my decoder!

It is most annoying when the truth is these Reps have SKY and other satellite platforms where they can watch International Big Brother's. Besides, we see worse in weekend tabloids.

Imagine, whats BBA without shower Hour!? grin

Nigerian law-makers are such a laugh. . .
they're telling us what to wear and what to watch. . . whats next?

If only they'd expend this much energy on issues that actually make sense maybe we can begin to make some progress in that country.

Whatever happens to freedom of choice? Truth is, some of them do not have time to take care of the home front, no wonder they complain teenagers are watching the Big Brother, when actually they suppose to censored such programme away from the kids. Besides, what are they doing about the pornography DVDs and CDs that are being auctioned around the cities in Nigeria? I bet since they dont patronise such kind of market, they wont know, abi, that is even worst than BBA. I am sick and tired of the world of pretence in this country, they would be preaching godliness, but they are worst behind the closed doors.
Having said that, I hasten to add that if however the next choice of BBA winner will be based on being naughty and carefree attitudes of a contestant as Richard has set the standard in the immediate past edition; and not the type of a winner as being witnessed in Cherise in the first episode, I think the BBA should be banned. Side this, I am cool with BBA anytime!!!!

The moment they started showing "shower hour" just change the channel. What is one man's meat is another man's poison.

@blumalam,
Kindly add poll to the topic, BBA to be banned or not, let us put it into vote.

@twinstaiye

its not about changing the channel,what is not good has no other name,i.e what is bad is bad,we are humans,with blood in our veins,they are being watched all over the world,thats so much unlike us,so so much unafrican.we all take our bath in the comforts of our bathroom,why not in the public? multichoice's 16snl rating is our 18 rating in nigeria,the show can definitely go on without shower hour.

if they adjust things then the reps should allow them broadcast, smiley
Re: Banned By House Of Reps: Big Brother Africa In Dilemma by twinstaiye(m): 4:38pm On Aug 07, 2008
@graciousme
Come to look at it from another angle, what is bad is bad, you are right. But the government has come out several times that SMOKERS ARE LIABLE TO DIE YOUNG, and lots of people still smokes. This is because they have the freedom of choice of smoking. They are however advised not to smoke in the public, but truth is, they hardly adhere to the law. The same thing goes with the show in question, agreed, some people dont support it, but that does not mean there are other people who has the choice of watching it. The moment a restriction not to air this show in nigeria is enforced, be rest assured the VCD or DVD version of it will spring up in this country, I can vouch for that for a fact. So what then happens to all the pornographic CDs and DVDs that are in circulations. Isnt that not bad than Big brother. Besides, Big brother can be control by simply changing the channel, how do you control spate of pornographic movies? While I dont hold brief for DSTV or also in support of the show (especially with the way immorality triumphs over morality in the last show), fact remains, it is not enough reason to put a blanket ban on it. I for one, had it in mind that this time around, the outcome cannot have any effect on me, because it teaches nothing but mere entertainment.

Hey!
what do you think of a Gospel/inspirational talent Hunt?
We have a lot of Gospel artist who seek recognition and promotion.
We have had enough fair share of circular talent hunts.
We need more of Infinity and Jeremiah Gyang in our society.
What do you all think?

Re: Banned By House Of Reps: Big Brother Africa In Dilemma by graciousme(f): 12:59pm On Aug 08, 2008
@twinstaiye
the reason they tell us smokers are liable to die young is because they want us to know the repaercusion though we still can make the choice to smoke or not,the choice is ours.but on a public show,we can choose what we watch too,i love the show,but i dont just want to watch nudity on my tv,if i want to watch such i can do that in the confides of my room on my dvd machine,where i will only be feeding my eyes and not the eyes of some people who really dont want to watch.i dont really know about the foreign BBAs but i read a post here that says that such amount of nudity is not aired on the foreign BBAs.even if its not true,nudity on movies/films is purely an act but on a realitytv show! its just too real to be watched without caution.

i still maintain that they should remove the removeables from the show and let the show get started. smiley

So no BBA because Naija no gree. . . . . nawa oh!

But seriously as much as people with strict morals would be in support of a ban or a regulation, it is quite ironic that a country with so much corruption at the same time feels morally justified to make this kind of move. It's much the same way OBJ says he is a christian. I ai'nt judging him though. . . .

To the topic

Does it mean they cant go on and show it to the rest of Africa?

If its banned here, then they should take it elsewhere and make way for better and more useful shows like the Dragons den and Apprentice Africa/Intern grin . Its just yet another reality show that needs to find its level.
Africans tend to overdo things. Like someone pointed out, the level of obscenity and lewdness in the BBA does not even happen in the other more advanced countries from where the show originated.
Thats how Gaetano went to the UK and shocked every house member in the House and he was sent back home to BBA before he caused any irreparable havoc.
We are not going to miss it .

Re: Banned By House Of Reps: Big Brother Africa In Dilemma by klas(m): 12:50pm On Aug 13, 2008
It is not the duty of the legislators to ban or unban a tv programme by mere saying so. It is purely executive responsibilty. Unless both chambers of the National Assembly pass a bill (not motion) to ban BBA AND it is assented to by the President of the Federal Republic before that date, the threat is just an addled threat. no effect.
