It was a mild drama of sort as hundreds of traders
of Imo origin sacked and displaced from Umuahia
market by the Abia state government last
Tuesday expressed their revulsion for the
administration of Governor Theodore Orji of Abia
state.
The Imo state Commissioner for Finance, Deacon
Chike Okafor had been on an inspection tour of
the new Imo Industrial market otherwise known
as Imo Malaysian market, where the over 1000
displaced traders were re-settled and
accommodated by the Imo state government.
His arrival was met by a jubilant crowd of traders
who sang the praises of the Rochas Okorocha
administration. However while the Commissioner
was addressing the crowd at the general goods
section of the market, sounds of siren disrupted
the commissioner’s speech and on turning
around it was the convoy of Governor Theodore
Orji driving past the market which is located at
the Obowo section of the boundary between Imo
and Abia.
The traders simply could not contain their rage as
they booed and jeered at the Governor. Catcalls
and unprintable invectives rent the air as some of
the angry traders had to be restrained from
pelting the convoy of the Governor.
The Commissioner however recalled that it was
around November of 2012 that the traders were
sacked from Umuahia market and noted that so
much work has gone into the new industrial
market.
Said he, “If you look back to where we started
from and remember that the massive work here
today was achieved within a space of 12 months,
you will easily appreciate the fact that the Imo
state government is responsive and sensitive to
your welfare. Though trading has begun in
earnest here, you must accept that work is still in
progress in this market. We are not ignorant of
your needs but I assure you on behalf of the Imo
state government that we will provide you good
roads, adequate water supply and power to make
the environment conducive for trade and
commerce.”
Okafor noted that the market which now has
timber, general goods and spare parts sections is
an emerging mega community. He disclosed that
the government has concluded arrangements to
secure 300 hectares of land to build a housing
estate and schools for the resettled traders most
of whom still shuttle from Umuahia to Obowo on
daily basis.
