The name, Enetimi Odom may not be a household name but Timaya no doubt is. Timaya, fondly called the egberi popsy 1 of Bayelsa has been active in the Nigerian music scene for years now, but wait a minute... Is it the same Timaya we had known or is it another Timaya that we now know? Hm... Timaya came into limelight in Port Harcourt through Hilda Dokubo's 'street to star' talent hunt initiative. He didn't win the competition, but was soon to become a national hit-maker. 2007 was the year and Timaya flooded the Nigerian airwaves with slangs like 'chai, chinekeme,' and many others as his debut album sold like pure water. He told the story of his people (Odi, Bayelsa and the Niger Delta at large), his life and the God factor in his success. Collabos started trooping in and everybody either wanted Timaya on their tracks or use his style. Gifted and as a product of grace his album was titled 'Gift and Grace.' His lyrics started becoming empty. Wit songs like 'Timaya don blow,' madness was born, the 'Timaya madness.' It became more of self praise and Shayo Pisanta was handy to increase the fire of that madness. So bad it was that Nico Gravity resurrected with 'Finish Timaya' which had 'seasons.' The third album, 'Rebirth' had Timaya emerging from 'our world' on the album cover to 'his world'. He experimented with other forms of music, changed style a bit and lyrically was emptier! By that album a new Timaya was born and he has even 'upgraded.' The social conscious Timaya is now a 'shake your bumbum' crooner. In his early interviews he'ld always confess his love for God with tracks like 'Peke Peke','Ogologoma' and 'halleluya' dedicated to Him, but now he confesses his love for 'ukwu!' Timaya's video used to be clean, but now it is x-rated. Lyrics wise his songs are becoming emptier with every new single. What really went wrong? Only God and the man who commited suicide (Timaya) has the answer! |
