edoyad: OK, let me settle this. If you think Schumacher(praying for his recovery), Hamilton, Vettel and Button are better drivers than Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton and Miley Cyrus say "I". If you disagree say "nay".
Now I want us think which of the groups belong to Auto Tranny and which drive manual grin grin

Keep deceiving urself by comparing people that drive as a career to people that drive to move from one place to another. Ask urself are u a race car driver? How many drivers on our roads and abroad are race car drivers? Even race car drivers don't drive like they drive race cars on normal roads. U want to race? then take it to the tracks. I'm sure if the Porsche Cerrera that killed Paul Walker (a professional driver) was an automatic u would be here saying automatic cars have too many problems. In the movie fast and furious 6, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona driven by Vin Diesel was fitted with 3 speed automatic. The BMW M5 was 7 speed automatic. Even the Jensen Interceptor, Ford Escort and the Ramp car all had auto transmission and were driven by professional drivers.

or Who is better between Jason statham and uche jombo!!! grin

For the record the Audi A8 used by Jason Statham in Transporter 2 was an automatic. Face it, manual cars are phasing out and its only a matter of time before they stop making them. They might still used them in race cars (even some race cars come with auto now) but will phase out in passenger cars.

I am currently driving an auto but before now, I used to drive a 1992 manual Mazda 626. I hardly drove the car in a stop and go traffic so I can't really say how terrible it can be to drive a manual in a heavy traffic. But I think it will be much easier with some of these recent manual cars. I drove a manual 2005 corolla(bank type) last year after dumping the Mazda in 2006. I thought I was going to have a hard time handling it for the first few minutes but I was stunned at how easy it was. I drove it as if I didn't have a manual driving long break. Very easy to drive than the Mazda. Like some people have pointed out, manual cars have improved over the years and they are now easier to handle than their old counterparts. I hope to drive a recent manual car in a crazy Lagos traffic someday.

You're so on point. I've got both auto and manual trans but I prefer the manual. I enjoy being in control.
God bless u

Hop in the car, start the engine..........

Put your manual gear in 1, release the clutch and accelerate hard...........

Accelerate till your rev needle climbs to about 6000RPM (In a regular car)..........change up fast and hard.......

Do it again for gear 2 and 3............You're driving within your car's power band by now...........change up to gear 4 ............you're flying by now.........

Still not fast enough??...........downshift to gear 3, rev till it then change up back to gear 4..........

Still not fast enough??......depress your clutch pedal hard, fast and release it............

Then, upshift to gear 5 and race towards the horizon with your heart in your mouth..............

This is why I love the manual gear, its so exciting to use hard. You tell your car what you want to do and it responds unlike autos that are so 1-dimensional.

A real Motorhead understands what I'm talking about.

Also, a manual car driver can easily adapt to an auto in less than 5mins but an Auto driver will have to learn driving all over again to drive a manual.

I always say this to auto drivers; "Pray you don't find yourself in a situation where u have to drive a manual gear to save a life becos that's when you'll discover how inept you truely are at driving".

Manual gear for real men? Certainly the joke of the century, except you all want me to believe 85% of the world drivers are incompetent since more than 85% of cars produce around the world are fitted with auto gear system.
96% of cars produced in the USA are fitted with auto tranny while 87% of cars driven in Europe and Asia are fitted with auto trannies, my first car was a 4- speed manual but I discovered a new driving experience when I bought my first car with auto gear system.
The auto gives me the freedom to think and plans how I'm going to make more money to fend for my family while in Lagos traffic, by the way who still drives manual in this age?
Abeg leave matter for Mathias, manual is outdated even car manufacturers have since moved up to auto for race cars, maybe those auto fitted race cars are driven by half-baked men.

Thank u so very much. I said it in my earlier post, only 4% of cars in the US are fitted with manual these days. I started with a manual but have moved on. Whoever says automatics are not fast enough is probably still stuck the the automatics of the 80's and 90's. Manuals are phasing out and in a few years time they will be a thing of the past. You like to be in control huh? Why not buy cars with manual everything, manual doors. , manual windows, manual trafficators, manual mirrors, no traction control or cruise control, no bluetooth or reverse camera, etc. then we know u are a petrol head. Only race cars will be fitted with manual in a few years, even race cars come with autos these days.

Race cars are now fitted with tiptronic gears and paddle shifters.

These are forms of gears that allow you control your gear change manually.

Real people that love driving love manuals.

I'll probably own an automatic soon for my boring daily commute but with extra money available, I'll definitely purchase a manual car for the weekend.

Triptronic is not the same thing as manual. Triptronics are automatic gears that can be operated as manual. Yes race cars are now using triptronic just to please the enthusiasts that love manual because they don't want to phase out manual cars just suddenly, so they give them an automatic car that can be driven as manual (not real manual though because it doesn't shift as fast as a manual car would). In triptronic mode, when u are on a high gear and lose speed, say u are climbing up the hill, when the rpm drops too low and u fail to downshift using the paddles, the computer will downshift itself. So its not manual.

The aim of the manual gear is to give you control over your car's responses.

Tiptronic and paddle shifters still enable one to do just that.

@topic. I drove an Auto car through the weekend and though it was relaxing, it lacked engagement and was a monotonous buzz of an experience.

I missed being able to downshift from 4th gear to 3rd just to feel that sudden burst of power.

I used to do just that in a friend's manual BMW 5 series and the car's response can bring tears of joy to ones eyes.

No auto can replicate that rush.

thats exactly what i am talking about. automatic drive is just flat...its like making love to a woman that is not inspiring...just lay there. but manual drive is so sexy expecially with all these german beasts like BMW and benz. oh have you ever tried overtaking and the gear change, cluctch down and fire on....oh speed kills but thrills.
i love manual and I don't know why people do think that auto drive is a new invention. it ain't bro...

Seriously. I can't believe so many people can't use use a manual
transmission. What happens in an emergency and a driver is needed and
your bitch ass can't drive the car?
If you can't operate both types of cars then no drivers license for you.
Also, you are not a man if you can't drive a stick.

The conventional manual transmission that is fitted in a car, is also called an
'H'-pattern transmission, because the shift-lever used to change gears, moves
in an 'H' pattern, while doing so. Driving a car fitted with a manual
transmission in a traffic-jam is more difficult than driving a car with an
automatic transmission. However, driving such a car on a high-way, brings
about a pleasure that comes second to none. One of the main benefits of
having a manual transmission is that you have complete control of the car,
which is built to respond readily, like a well-groomed horse is trained to
respond to your every action.
About Manual Transmission
Although the sale of these cars have declined, no one can deny the fact that
they give the driver complete control over his car. This is an important fact that
well describes the benefits such cars can offer.
An eagle-eyed car driver, tuned into the traffic in front of him, can judge when
the traffic pattern is going to change. He doesn't have to observe and analyze
the driving style of the drivers of the vehicles in front, to predict breaks or gaps
in the traffic. He knows it instinctively, and by using a hand-operated
transmission, can use the changing traffic pattern to his advantage. One of the
advantages is that, the shifting of gears is faster than that of an automatic
transmission. The car's response to a gear change is immediate. So overtaking
a car in front, can be planned and executed without a glitch.
Can you save money, when you are approaching a traffic light that has just
turned red? Certainly, you can! Use the shift lever and immediately down-shift
to neutral, and let the car cruise to the traffic signal. This simple trick will save
your money, each time you have to stop at a traffic light. A car in neutral,
burns less fuel.
However, don't use this trick while coming down a steep slope, because there,
you need to be in total control of the car. This is a situation that demands
complete control over your car's speed. If the brakes are not operating
properly or if they have failed completely, then, you can simply down-shift to
the lowest gear. In this way, you can use your car's engine to reduce your car's
speed and gain control of your car. One of the pros is that this particular safety
factor that it offers, when you are in a tight spot. In an emergency, this extra
control can make a huge difference to your safety.
Down-shifting to lower gears can also give you extra control over your car, while
driving on a road covered with snow, or wet with rain-water. It also helps while
driving your car over a muddy surface that does not offer enough traction.
Driving a car in low gear is not fuel efficient and it is a great strain on the
engine and the clutch.

Its true that everyone should know how to drive both.. I think everyone that made a comment on this thread can drive both manual and auto. But just because someone is driving an auto doesn't mean he is not a real man, its a matter of choice and what suits u. Some automatics have sports mode which gives the car the desired pick up close to what manuals can offer. Also Automatics have kickdown, so I don't understand this ur logic of trying to overtake and shifting to the 3rd gear to get burst of power. In automatic, just press the throttle harder and the computer signals the transmission to kickdown, then feel the burst of power. Newer automatics as as quick as manuals, if not quicker . The only scenario I think manuals have more advantage is on race tracks.. but then how many people drive on race tracks?

Well, having read the views from both sides of the divide.. its clear to me that the manual thing is like a kind of cult... when you were in school (assuming you studied in a Nigerian University)... then you must have heard of cults ... people feared them, some loved them, some wished they could join but then not just anyone could join... most of those who drive manuals are proud of their initiation into the Brotherhood of the Manual Transmission and consider the uninitiated beneath them, indeed they consider themselves superior and the automatic only type inferior drivers!
