Antibiotic are a class of medicines called antimicrobials. Micorbes or microorganisms, are tiny organisms that can be seen only with the help of a microscope. Antibiotics can also act against microorganisms that are beneficial. There are microorganisms that resides in certain parts of the body and can be harmless and beneficial in their normal location to the host and in the absence of coincident abnormalities. These microorganisms are referred to as normal resident flora. Lactobacilli are protective bacteria that help to control disease-causing organisms and are vital to maintaining the homeostasis of the vaginal flora. Excessive use of antibiotics can leave you open to yeast infection by killing this good bacteria that lives there. Once this bacteria is subdued the perfect environment is created for yeast infection (thrush).

Probiotics are friendly bacteria that help maintain the balance of microorganisms in the body. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotic and when reasonable population of it is present in the vaginal, it is very difficult for unfriendly organisms such as candida to thrive. What this can mean is that women who frequently experience yeast infections, or who are using antibiotics can take probiotics. Probiotic are found in food such as yoghurt, cheese, sauerkraut, butter milk and soy milk.

Warnings: Probiotics might cause side effects such as gas and diarrhea. These symptoms should go away with continued use. People with weak immune systems might not tolerate probiotics well. Always talk to your doctor before using probiotics. A yeast infection could be a sign of a more serious medical condition, such as a sexually transmitted disease.
