I saw this thread and I knew I needed to share this. In case most of you missed it, these are some life changing advice. Ignore them at your peril. If someone had told me this sooner, I wouldn't have to learn it by myself and go through all I went through. https://www.nairaland.com/2668937/6-mistakes-likely-make-between Do have a lovely day. 3 Likes 1 Share |

AltarBoy1:This is sooo true. 'Locked out of many opportunities'. The fact is higher grades open more opportunities for an average job hunter....which someone with a lesser grade cannot even have a leeway to. While I respect the place of skills, the place of academic prowess cannot be overemphasized. There's a reason while there're grades in colleges(except in unclassified degrees). While I don't discard the 'skill-supporting side', the mathematics is simple: Higher grade + skill= a quicker job acquisition Higher grade= advantageous in getting the FIRST JOB especially (often times, you learn on the job during the probation period). Lesser grade(2nd class lower nd below) + skill= this is favourable especially in the experience hire Lesser grade without skill = u may need to try 'self employment'. Albeit, the WEAKEST STUDENT in my class then now works with VON, while some high flying are still stuck with low pay jobs. In essence, the hallmark is Networking (something which Nigerians call 'LEG') NB: I refer to people who intends on getting a salaried job. Apparently anyone can be an entrepreneur. 2 Likes |

kaycodes:Sir, I've applied and I've gotten a reply from them inviting me for the next phase of the recruiting process. I hope I scale through this too, though I have a very good LinkedIn profile. But, the issue now is that... I'm a student. Hope this won't affect the expected level of productivity and efficiency after been offered the job? Your candid advice is needed sir. |

HisVine: I believe these are work from home opportunities. I also believe as a student you can manage yoour time properly. Nigeria and US have different tme zones. You just need to make some sacrifices in terms of time. Afterall time na money.. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Hmnn the Last time I came to this thread was March now I came in and met about 25pages to read. Where do I start from? Honestly I came here to say thank you to darrellrivers, xfire, Bigdreams etc for the inspiration so far. I came across this thread last year when I was still serving my fatherland (NYSC) I remember how I took a pen and a jotter to write down some points I got here but I don't even have time for that now because of my job. The only spare time I have is weekends which I use for sleep, laundry and rest. I have learnt a lot from this thread and I must say kudos to all of you who kept the tread going. I will find time to go through all the pages I missed. Thanks Guys 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Hello xfire I'd love to commend you for the greatly inspiring work you're doing here. I've followed this thread since last year and I've introduced same to my friends. I'd love some guidance. I'm currently pursuing an MSc in an engineering field in one of the top 3 schools in the UK. What do you think I should be doing now asides my studies to get me the needed technical skills required to work in the oil and gas sector? Thank you |

Jamzig1:1. Instrumentation and control is pretty applicable in all manufacturing or engineering company. Machines and equipment must have some sort of controls to ensure quality and consistency of products. So it's in demand. And that brings me to your 2nd questions. 2. Most organizations tend to recruit electrical engineers as I & C engineers. It is mostly exclusively reserved for electrical engineers. Although there are many short courses one can offer in instrumentation, the skill is usually best acquired through experience. If you want to pursue a career in instrumentation, then I will advise you to consider furthering your studies in engineering after your first degree to make you competitive. 3. There are so many areas in physics that you can specialize in. Just do a google search. With a degree in physics you can branch off to so many disciplines such as telecommunications, electronics, power or even mechanical engineering. But you will most likely need a second degree to actualize your dream. |
