In spite of the popularity of internet piracy of movies and rampant hawking of pirated movies, 2013 was the best year in the history of U.S. box office with almost $11 billion in revenues. The U.S./Canada box office was $10.8 billion in 2012. And that is great news for the American motion picture industry and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) must be celebrating with the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Christopher J. Dodd popping champagne.
Increasing DVD sales, rentals and on-demand services have not stopped millions of moviegoers from flocking to the cinemas to see blockbusters on the big silver screen.

"2013 has finally caught up with and passed 2012′s box office numbers, in both gross receipts and ticket sales. Audiences are also showing up at a rate 7% ahead of 2012, and the summer in particular has been an enormous success — up more than 10% over last summer."

"Entertainment is one of the bright spots of our economy. The gap between what we can do and other countries can do is enormous. That's worth cheering about, " said President Barack Obama commending the bullish market of the American film industry on November 26, 2013, at an event attended by 2,000 people at the Glendale campus of DreamWorks Animation SKG when he was hosted by DreamWorks Animation Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is one of Obama's biggest contributors and fundraisers.
