OOU ADMISSIONS Part I: Report on Sunday 14th September 2014 Stakeholders' meeting Great OOUites, let observe 1 minute silence for our departed colleagues before we read this report. The meeting was well attended and discussion continued from where it ended last Thursday. The stakeholders were informed that the meeting was called to make comfortable decisions that would end the present crisis because the present situation was affecting them most. Government goes, Government comes, University remains, the meeting noted. The decisions reached at the meeting were expected to be taken to Senate on Monday for deliberation and Governing Council for the same purpose on Tuesday. Issues discussed are: 1. Reduced School fees as advertised on the OOU website 2. Implementation 3. Reopening of the School Reduced fees The SUG informed the gathering that the reduced fees was not up to the 61% announced by the Government through the Commissioner for Education and requested for further reduction to meet the 50% promised by the Governor during his campaign. The point was noted and in the ensued discussion, SUG was made to realize that some political situation prevailed in the state then which made him to promise 50% and the situation was also reversed before he came into power(Present SUG is aware of the situation but said that the then SUG were coerced to sign document, posterity will judge everybody). After exhaustive deliberation, in the spirit of give and take, though painful as submitted by the SUG, it accepted the reduction of fees as advertised at the University website. The stakeholder applauded the SUG for the winning the battle to reduce the school fees with as much as over N70,000 for the medical students and certain percentages for the others. i also clap for them oooo. Implementation the issue of implementation was hotly debated and it is still contentious. while the SUG insisted that since it had shifted ground by accepting the reduction of fees as announced by the government, the school should also shift ground by allowing the implementation this 2013/14 session. what a good way to negotiate! i salute them all. However, it was tabled before the meeting that about N600m naira would be needed to augment the finances of the University if the implementation started immediately which government might not be ready to pay because of budgetary issue and the finances of the state. Management reiterated that it was not opposed to free education in the University if the Counterpart fund from the govt would be made available immediately to run the university. it was observed that there is minimum budget to provide critical needs of the university below which the university would have to close down- staff will down tools and students would have to go home again. this will amount to truncated victory. God forbid. It was further argued that the best way out of the issue of implementation is to cancel the 2013/2014 session and begin the 2014/2015 session where the implementation will be immediate. it was however observed at the meeting that though the session could be collapsed but house rent, transport fare, pocket money from parents and other logistics you have put into the 2013/2014 could not be collapsed. it was at that level that Management submitted that it was the duty of University Senate to adjudicate on the issue of academic calendar. He said he would present the calendar to Senate on Monday, 15th September, 2014 and the decision of senate would also be discussed at the next Governing Council Scheduled to hold on Tuesday, 16th September, 2014. it also pleaded with the SUG to accept the decision of the Senate on the matter in the best interest of the University, as it was the senate that would implement the calendar. SUG through the President still insisted on immediate implementation saying "it is the not the years that matter but the live put into the years". He cited example of cancellation of session in 2003/04, 2008/09. he said he would have graduated at the age of 26 years but is now graduating at 27. This means that he is sure is through with his studies in the University. He however admitted that he would be carrying the certificate of the University till death do them part. Do you want to add extra year like he did? to me, God forbid. He was lucky to have added just only one year. with the present unresolved National ASUU demand, Elections next year, more than a year may be added if we don't solve our problems now and be caught in the middle of our studies if anything would happen eventually. Meanwhile, the meeting was favourably disposed to rescuing the 2013/2014 being lost to the crisis cos the University would also loose substantial amount of money and quality staff when salaries are no longer regular and attractive. But the University had survived in the past in the face of cancellation of session in 2003, 2008 and the issue of money being lost could not be sufficient but our own future which we need to rescue. Reopening of the school The SUG pointblank, told the meeting that it was not opposed to the unconditional reopening of the University because it did not close the school but was reminded that the University was closed for security reasons. If the SUG could guarantee peace on campus the school may be reopened latest by Monday for resumption of academic activities but if it insisted on immediate implementation in the face of the analysis above, then the end to the crisis is far from being reached. To this end, we need to rescue our future. There appeared to be division among the SUG as those that had their results approved last week supported no implementation no reopening while those still in school among them wanted the school to reopen for academic activities while further negotiation continues. You would have expected the response from the already graduated members because they are no longer in the boat directly but if they feel they could cause problem they might also be dragged into this boat when the university refuses to take their results to NYSC so that they will not be able to serve. Their will be more dangerous because their mates from other schools who would be serving will ask them questions. It is time for all of us to wake up. The next session is just around the corner.
