TEXT: JOB 25:1-6

Key verse: “Dominion and fear are with him, he maketh peace in his high places” (Job 25:2).

Abraham Lincoln, former President of United States of America, once said: “I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.”

That could possibly be the perception of Bildad, who had repeatedly attacked Job in spite of God’s declaration that Job was a just man. As against his usual style of raining accusations on Job, Bildad focused, this time, on God’s dominion, the supremacy of His power, His innumerable armies and His providence, which extended over all.

Bildad concluded that man could not be justified before God, noting that heavenly bodies could not be reputed pure in His sight; much less man, who is naturally weak and sinful. He highlighted the utter helplessness of man and his need of God.

Of course, Bildad was right when he pointed out that every person had committed one wrong thing or the other against God, which agreed with Romans 3:23 that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. But he did not disclose that God had made provision for man’s redemption (Romans 3:24). God forgives us when we confess our evil deeds to Him.

As Job passed through the night of adversity and patiently awaited for the morning to break forth and set him free from his sorrows, every other thing which included the sun, the moon, the stars and the element, seemed so vain that he could only look up to God who is the ever present help in the day of trouble. Every believer in Christ must endeavour to live a holy lifestyle. Whatever you are passing through, whatever adversity that may have befallen you, be rest assured that the morning of joy will definitely appear.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: We have a God who delights in impossibilities.

TEXT: LEVITICUS 17:1-7

Key verse: “To the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they offer in the open field, even that they may bring them unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest, and offer them for peace offerings unto the LORD” (Leviticus 17:5).

What can a man bring to God which will be excellent and acceptable in His sight? John Bunyan’s answer may surprise us - a broken and contrite heart. This was the subject of his book ‘acceptable sacrifice’ a moving exposition of Psalm 51:17, the last work which he prepared for the press before his departure to glory. Bunyan shows from Scripture why a broken heart is so acceptable to God. He characterizes the unbroken heart of man, showing why it must be made contrite, and explains the nature of the change which is involved. He also guides the reader in discerning whether this change has taken place, and shows how the heart, once broken, can be kept tender.

The Israelites, before the building of the tabernacle, did offer their sacrifices in the open field from which they are now restrained through this new order given by God in our text. For their sacrifices to be acceptable unto God, all Israelites and persons sojourning in their land were commanded to bring their sacrifices to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. The sacrifices were to be offered unto the Lord, and those who disobeyed were to be cut off. This was done that the sacrifices might be offered publicly, and be known to be offered to the Lord and not to idols or devils. It was equally God’s intention to prevent private idolatry taking place in the land and to avoid unauthorized persons intruding into the priests’ office.

Under the New Testament dispensation, the emphasis is no longer on animal sacrifices to be brought to the priest but on individual believers becoming living sacrifices, holy and acceptable unto God. It is the kind of sacrifice that resonates with the relationship we have received – as God has received us freely, we give ourselves freely.

As we prepare to enter into a new day, our focus must be on Christ who gave Himself to us that we might live unto Him.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Nothing pleases God more as a whole-hearted sacrifice!

TOPIC: Watch Their Lies!

"Saturday, July 26, 2014"

*TEXT:  JEREMIAH 27:12-22*

*"KEY VERSE: “Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon: for they prophesy a lie unto you” (Jeremiah 27:14)."*
The days in which we live are days when every Tom, Dick and Harry in the name of a prophet or ‘a man of God’ has a vision, a prophecy or a word he is ready to give to the inquisitive or undiscerning believers. Unfortunately, many so-called Christians are also eager to receive the message from ‘heaven’ through the so-called man of God who are nothing but deceivers. Such unwary believers seem oblivious of the warning by God, “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20).
In the passage today, God expressly and repeatedly warns us against listening to and believing just any man or woman in or outside the church who tells us things contrary to the revealed will of God in the Scripture or through our God-appointed, tested and trusted leaders in the church.
The children of Israel here disregarded the prophecy of their God-appointed prophet, Jeremiah and were already yielding to the words of the false prophets. God, in his love, sent a strong warning to them not to believe those false prophets as the captivity of Judah by Babylon must be completely accomplished.
The important lesson we need to learn is to believe the Bible and the sound teachings we are receiving from the church than running after prophecies or visions that weaken our minds. We also need to resolve to patiently wait for God. Any revelation or vision that runs contrary to the word of God, or which imputes wrong timing and negative interpretation and application must be firmly resisted like the proverbial plague. Avoid being misled by so-called modern prophets and teachers.
*"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Keep to the Bible alone and you won’t miss it."*

TOPIC: Life In The Blood

"Sunday, July 27, 2014

"*TEXT: LEVITICUS 17:8-16*

*"Key verse: “And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people” (Leviticus 17:10)."*
The reason, no doubt, the laws of most nations of the world are stiff concerning murder and bloodshed is because of the value God has placed on life. Israel’s redemption from Egyptian slavery and bondage was made possible by the blood of the passover lamb. In other words, they were saved by the shedding of the blood of the animal; its death becoming substitutionary for the people. The Lord directed the children of Israel that the blood of the lamb at passover was to be placed on the two side posts and on the upper door post of every home, “and when I see the blood, I will pass over you” (Exodus 12:13).
The life of the flesh is in the blood (verse 11). The blood of any animal is identified with its life. The animal sacrifice is used as atonement for human sin at the price of the animal’s life. This is the principle of substitutionary atonement: the animal dying in man’s place. This underscores the importance and pricelessness of the blood of Christ as the instrument of our salvation and redemption.
Eating of blood was prohibited because of the value God attaches to blood. It is also to discourage heathen and idolatrous practices and to preserve and remember the symbolism of the sacrifice – Christ’s death on the cross for the redemption of man. No other sacrifice is needed today. “For, there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man, Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). The Blood of the Saviour is the means by which believers have been ransomed, the means by which we have been vindicated over guilt and condemnation. Therefore the Blood must be sacredly appreciated.
*"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Without shedding of blood, no remission of sin.”"*

TOPIC: Yielding To His Lordship

"Monday, July 28, 2014"

*TEXT: LEVITICUS 18:1-16*

*"Key verse: Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God” (Leviticus 18:2)."*
Respect for constituted authority means modeling our lives along the lines of their prescriptions. Our conducts are expected to be moderated by the reality of what the laws say, or the guidelines they have stipulated. This is indeed the greatest tribute we can pay to those who have the duty to rule over us, or govern our affairs, those who have the responsibility to provide for the peace and orderly conduct of our lives - protecting us from infractions by others and promoting our overall rights and interests. It is the minimum obligation we owe those over us.
God desires much more obedience from all His children. Here, He commands Moses to declare to the children of Israel that He is the Lord their God. This being so, their standard for living was not to be according to the practices they witnessed in Egypt, or the abominations they were to encounter in Canaan. God’s word was to be their supreme guide and the barometer by which their lives were to be measured. In particular, therefore, the Lord instructed them against immoral dealings or unlawful marriages with  anyone faintly related to them, or lusting after such people, or even the extreme case of incest. God is holy and all His children are to be holy also. To attain this state of holiness, the children of Israel were commanded to observe all of God’s statutes and judgments “which if a man do, he shall live in them; I am the Lord.”
The test of our faithfulness to God is in how we regard Him in our lives. If we consider Him indeed as our Lord, then He must have the final say in all areas of our lives. We must trust that He knows our interests best and that He means well for us. We must seek to avoid any action that will defile us or contravene His holy expectations. In short, if He is the Lord of our lives, we must keep His words even to the minutest details.

TOPIC: Grace, Not A License To Sin!

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

TEXT: LEVITICUS 18:17-30

KEY VERSE: “Therefore shall ye keep mine ordinance, that ye commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God” (Leviticus 18:30).

As Christians, we do rejoice that we are not under the dispensation of the laws of the Old Testament with so many of its “dos” and “don’ts”. We relish so much the grace of God that does not condition our salvation on the works of our hands and the sacrifices we have to bring but on Christ’s final and eternal sacrifice. However, there is a point in which many Christians err in their understanding of the grace of God in relation to the moral obligations commanded in the Old Testament. They misinterpret the grace of God to mean having unrestrained liberty to do whatever they wish. Some declare that Christ’s sacrifice has taken care of the sins they ever committed or would ever commit. They brand those who seek to live straight and keep the moral laws as being unduly legalistic, fanatical and under bondage. This is an abuse of grace!

Grace does not take from us our moral obligations. The moral ordinances contained in the passage of our meditation this morning are as binding on us today as they were binding on all the people in the Old Testament dispensation. Disobedience to these laws carries the same weight of judgment today as it did in the Old Testament. Neither law nor grace can protect from judgment in such cases. It is folly to place one’s hope in a grace that will excuse sin and allow one to do the very thing forbidden to be done under the terms of grace as revealed in God’s word.

Real grace brings along with it the divine enablement to obey God’s word and live right. Keeping God’s word is revealed as the secret of blessing both in the Old and New Testaments. God’s words are to keep us from committing these abominable practices and thereby defiling ourselves. Living contrary to the word of God on the excuse of grace is an abuse of God’s grace and therefore subject to God’s judgement.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Grace does not take from us our moral duties.

TOPIC: Care For Them

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

*TEXT:  LEVITICUS 19:1-13*

*"KEY VERSE: “And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God” (Leviticus 19:10)."*
The phrase, “God’s preferential option for the poor” was coined by some religious scholars. This, they use to describe the special attention God pays to the poor and the disadvantaged as reflected in both the Old and New Testaments. Truly, the poor easily gets God’s attention because of their disposition that befits the grace of God. But in a world that runs on the principle of “the survival of the fittest,” who cares for the poor?  Even a pastor of a gospel church was heard sometime ago announcing to his congregation that his church was not for the poor. How absurd!
In today’s text, we find sundry ceremonial and moral precepts God gave to the children of Israel through Moses. They contain principles that should get us sure-footed on the path of righteousness. Israel was reminded that they were dealing with a holy God and as such were expected to be holy themselves. Even so are we, that are by redemption affiliated to the same God of holiness expected to be holy. This holiness consists in our duties to God and to man.
Verses 9 and 10, however, draw attention to God’s concern for the poor and the disadvantaged. The Jews were required to deliberately leave their corn-fields and vineyards after harvesting for the poor to pick up the leftover. God expects the piety of His people to incorporate benevolence - making provision for the poor and needy.
The people of the world may continue with their greed, avarice and covetousness, but those who have tasted of the grace of God and in whose hearts the love of God is shed abroad have no excuse to neglect this duty of caring for the poor and disadvantaged. Look around, see the poor and, as much as it lies in you, help put a smile on their faces. Indeed, when you share your blessings with the less privileged, those blessing become multiplied. In attending to the poor though, let’s strike a balance. Don’t become a god to anyone and do not allow your benevolence to promote idleness.
*"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Holiness does not make us insensitive to people’s need."*

TEXT: LEVITICUS 19:14-22

KEY VERSE: “Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:14).

If we let the Bible rule our thoughts and personal conduct, we will have the right attitude toward everybody. It helps us to act the way Christians should in all our relationships with others.

In the passage of Scriptures for today, we see God’s demand on his people for discretion and righteousness in their relationship with all men. True believers are the people of God. We are to be mindful of the safety of those that cannot help themselves. The disabled, the disadvantaged, the defenseless and minors are not to be taken advantage of. We are to fear the Lord. Believers in position of authority are to be different from the world. They are to dispense justice without fear, compromise or regard to persons, for such behaviours are an abomination in the sight of God.

Every true believer is expected to be a soul winner and never a waster. To this end, we are to warn sinners daily of the doom and the consequences of sin by effectively presenting the gospel to them. We should not permit sin by not preaching to them, otherwise, we ourselves become guilty of sin and liable to judgment (Ezekiel 3:18). The believer is not a slanderer. He allows the Spirit’s control over his passions and emotions, and he takes care not to offend in word or in deed.

Some of the greatest proofs of a true relationship with Christ is the possession of God’s love in the heart towards others and the fact that we keep His commandments. The genuineness of our profession is not measured by the high-sounding words of the testimony we give, but by the fruits of obedience which show forth in our lives. Strive to be a fruitful, shinning Christian.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Don’t make your life offensive; make it winsome for Christ.

TOPIC: Consecration Unto God Alone

"Friday, August 01, 2014"

*TEXT: LEVITICUS 19:23-37*

*"Key verse: “Therefore shall ye observe all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:37)."*
George Foreman, at 45, was the oldest man in the world to win the heavyweight boxing champion. In his book, God in My Corner, he recounted how he achieved the feat. When he staged a comeback, nearly ten years out of boxing, he felt he needed to get rid of some excess fat, as he had ballooned from 220 to 315 pounds, which was not good enough for him.
Sequel to this, he engaged himself in fat-shedding exercises. He started with the basics –running every day. At first, he could not make up to a mile. Intermittently, he would stop to catch his breath, huffing and puffing. Apart from himself and his wife, no one else believed he could recapture the title, which he had won before. But with time, especially in the eight month, after a continuous exercise, he was able to shed much fat and finally got down to his fighting weight – 229 pounds. The rest was a testimony.
Just as Foreman controlled himself, our text revealed the restriction, which God placed before the Israelites. For the first three years, they should not eat the fruits of their farm and on the fourth year, when the fruit had become holy, they should offer it to praise Him. Then, from the fifth year, they should start eating the fruits. For the greedy ones among them, this might prove an uphill task. They might start eating the fruit from the first year, thus disregarding God’s instruction, which, unfortunately, might attract God’s wrath upon their lives.
Sometimes, God can give such a holdup directive concerning His will and it may be to teach us self-control or how to be patient. Unfortunately, some impatient and disobedient believers may not appreciate this waiting period.
Our text equally stressed God’s warning against all forms of ungodly practices, particularly magic, charm, horoscopy, shaving because of the dead and tattoo, among others. If you are involved or giving approval to these evil practices, you had better repent.
*"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: With complete consecration comes perfect peace."*

*TEXT:  JEREMIAH 27:1-11*

*"Key verse: “Thus saith the LORD to me; Make thee bonds and yokes, and put them upon thy neck” (Jeremiah 27:2)."*
The good illustration is worth more than a “sack of chalk,” says an old time infants’ school teacher. Illustrations when aptly used, are like windows on the side of a walled house. They throw light into the rooms that all may see.
Though, Jeremiah was a tested servant of God, a faithful prophet who is also reputed for his lucid use of language, God insisted here that the message of this prophecy be practically demonstrated so as to make vivid in the eyes of the people, the judgment that was to come. This use of visual aids was not merely to make understanding easier; it was intended to give more power and effect to the word.
Isn’t it true that action speaks louder than words? People see what we do more readily than what we say. Sadly, many so-called preachers of the gospel verbalise more than they practise. They teach people to follow their words and not their actions. But Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, urged believers in his day to “follow me as I follow Christ.” His outward dispositions portrayed his profession as a servant of God. Practical Christianity brings convictions upon more of our neighbours, friends and colleagues than the few that we have won through our preachings. Paul also urged believers: “Put on therefore, as elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering...” (Colossians 3:12-16).
Many  of our hearers would rather have us walk with them than merely show them the way. As true believers, we must strive to live out our profession, showing an exemplary, righteous character for others to follow.

A story was told of Mamie Adams, who always went to one particular branch post office in her town because of the friendly approach of the postal employees there. One day, just before Christmas, as she went there to buy stamps, there was a long queue and someone pointed out that there was no need to wait in line because there was a stamp machine in the lobby. Mamie replied: “I know, but the machine won’t ask me about my arthritis.”
Job expected his friend, Bildad, just like the postal employees did to Mamie, to soothe his pains with words of encouragement. Unfortunately, Bildad’s words could not help Job, who was still suffering. For Job, Bildad’s description of God was very poor and so, Job believed that words about God should not merely come from the human mind, but they should come from Holy Spirit. Job, while noting that Bildad should have applied wisdom, showed Bildad what he ought to have said: “How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength?” (Job 26:2).
Today, many Christians, in an attempt to exalt self and exhibit self-righteousness, destroy other people with unkind words, notwithstanding what these people might be passing through. But God, in Colossians 4:6, counseled: “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”
Job’s detailed description of vast spaces, in his reply to Bildad’s speech, would have probably convinced Bildad that he was not the sole custodian of knowledge about God. Job spoke about hell as well as heaven; the sky and the clouds; and about mysteries, for example the horizon and the rain.

TEXT: JOB 27:11-23

Key verse: “This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty” (Job 27:13).

Thomas Carlyle had a bitter experience with his manuscript. For months, he had, with all his resources, busied himself with the manuscript, which he hoped to turn into a book entitled, ‘The French Revolution.’ When he got satisfied with the level of efforts he put into it, Carlyle sent the manuscript to his friend, John Stuart Mill, for critical evaluation. Mill passed the manuscript on to Mrs. Chapman, who he thought would be able to make a fair comment.

Unfortunately, the lady, after reading it by the fireplace on the evening of March 5, 1834, before she went to bed, dropped the manuscript on the mantel. Her maid, who came the following day to clean the room and to start the fire in the fireplace, thought the manuscript was a waste paper and used it as fuel to kindle the fire. That was how the work of many months got burned up in a matter of seconds.

The catastrophe, which befell Carlyle, will certainly be a child’s play when compared to the punishment, which God will mete upon sinners, if they fail to repent. This is the fact Job laboured to expound to his friends. Job’s friends had voiced a similar opinion but had mistaken Job for a wicked man, simply because he was in great affliction. Job tried to set the matter in true light by teaching what he knew to be the mind of God and not mere human opinion.

Much as he shared his friends’ idea that as a mark of God’s judgment, afflictions must trail the wicked, he knew that they did not always come the way they thought. The wicked may multiply children and “heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay,” yet, he cannot escape divine wrath even though it takes longer coming.

All he trusted on earth - wealth and social connection - will be unable to save him from the storm of God’s wrath even as he dies miserably. The question is: what is your relationship with God?

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY No one ever gets away with wickedness; retributive justice is sure.

TOPIC: With All Diligence, Seek God

"Wednesday, August 06, 2014"

*TEXT: JOB 28:1-11*
*"Key verse: “He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing” (Job 28:10)."*
Men, whose names are written in history, never gave up to life’s challenges. Edward Gibbon, one of them, was noted to have spent twenty-six years writing his great work on history, while Noah Webster worked diligently for thirty-six years to bring into print the first edition of his dictionary. Cicero, a Roman orator, was also said to have practised before friends everyday for thirty years in order to perfect his public speaking. Among all these men, who carved a niche for themselves, one thing stood out - persistence.
This was the centrality of Job’s sermon to his friends in our text. While explaining the challenges that miners would experience before they could get any precious resources, Job pointed out that they would go deep down into the earth, break rocks and excavate the soil to make deep furrows in the dark recesses of the earth where the sunlight could not penetrate. From that depth, precious stones and gems would be brought to the surface and, through special process, would be separated from the dross.
The miners’ efforts of producing the precious mineral, when compared with the energy, which we put in the Lord’s work, attests to the fact that our contribution is inconsequential. This, of course, should lead us to some heart-searching questions: Why is our service for Christ sometimes performed in a halfhearted manner? Why do some people, who pursue earthly goals, put us to shame with their diligence?
The Scripture says that whatever a man soweth he will reap. If we seek Jesus Christ as earnestly as miners seek for hidden treasures, we will discover God’s hidden treasures in our lives, which will make us to prosper spiritually and physically beyond measure. Jesus is the Word and Wisdom of God personified. So, knowing Him experientially is the greatest of all knowledge and seeking for that knowledge the right way is a treasure indeed.
*"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Idleness is a short road to death, but diligence is the way of life."*

TOPIC: God's Enduring Mercy
"Monday, August 04, 2014
"*TEXT: LUKE 13:1-10*
*"KEY VERSE: “And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down” (Luke 13:8,9)."*
Abraham Lincoln, after General Robert E. Lee had surrendered, spoke to a large crowd from the balcony of the White House. His speech raised some curiosities and Senator Harlan, after listening to Lincoln attentively, asked: “What shall we do with the rebels?” The vindictive crowd shouted back, “hang them!” But Tad, Lincoln’s fourth and youngest son, who was then 11 years old, turned to his father and said: “No, no, Papa. Not hang them. Hang on to them!” Lincoln replied: “That’s it!” That was a call for mercy of the rebels.
Christ, in His parable of the fig tree, aptly illustrated the mercy of God in not cutting down the fig tree but instead created an enabling environment for it to recover its ability to bear fruit. Although, judgment is delayed for the moment, mercy and justice must, however, go hand in hand. That was why the fig tree was given the opportunity to revive and be fruitful within a given time; otherwise, the axe of judgment would descend upon it without remedy.
When God has borne long, we may hope that He will bear with us yet a little longer, but such hope may be as good as forlorn. While justice is demanding “cut it down; why cumbered it the ground?” mercy is pleading, “let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it.”
The parable, therefore, is Christ’s call on sinners to rest upon the mercy of God while making haste to get out of sin completely to avoid the danger of being cut down; for “except ye repent”, said He, “ye shall all likewise perish.”

TOPIC: Strive to Enter In

"Thursday, August 07, 2014"

*TEXT: LUKE 13:23-35*

*"Key verse: “Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able” (Luke 13:24)."*
Abraham Lincoln, in a speech he made in 1863, said: “We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.”
Even now, this has been the attitude of many people. Unfortunately, some Christians are among them, living without heaven in focus. Based on the character of people, Jesus was certain that there would be few who would be saved. But He cautioned: “Strive to enter in at the strait gate.” For Him, it would take earnestness, focus and determination to make heaven.
Jesus, while answering the enquirer’s question: “are there few that be saved,” was point-blank that those who merely wish they would make heaven but would not do anything about the salvation of their soul, could never get there. Many people, today, do not take this warning seriously. Some will even seek to enter through another way other than the right channel, while others will make attempt when it is too late and as such shall not be able to enter.
Earnestly give serious thought to your relationship with God. How much striving have you exerted to get into His Kingdom? Are you merely wishing you will be there? Make the most of today’s opportunity to enter through sincere repentance, faith in Christ and God’s kind of righteousness.
*"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Heaven has no space for those who refuse to get saved. "*

*TEXT: JOB 29:1-11*

*"Key verse: “When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me; When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil” (Job 29:5,6)."*
Hudson Taylor, a missionary to China while imploring Christians to have complete trust in God’s faithfulness, wrote, in his journal: “Our heavenly Father is a very experienced One. He knows very well that His children wake up with a good appetite every morning. He sustained three million Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years. We do not expect He will send three million missionaries to China; but if He did, He would have ample means to sustain them all.”
Our text illustrates God’s power to meet His children’s needs. Job captured his youthful days when God was highly delighted in him because he also delighted in His ways. The attendant blessings were mouth-watering and splendid. It was a wholesome life, which was in the sunshine of the care and goodness of God; a blessed life that daily received the attention of heaven. Job’s testimony was not only that God loved and protected him, but it was also that God provided for all his needs, which included wealth and children. But affliction came. Not that God had forsaken him, but because it was a test on his faith in God. In schools, before a student is promoted from one class to the other, he or she must pass promotional examination. Job’s predicament, to an extent, was a spiritual promotional examination, which he needed to pass.
Today, God allows us to go through certain challenges. Not that He hates us, but He wants us to attain some spiritual heights. God, obviously, loves the righteous and takes delight in their affairs. Therefore, we must learn to patiently trust Him in all areas of our lives and daily ask that He teaches us to live in accordance with His will. Our walk and continuous obedience to Him will make us to experience His very best. God is always faithful to lead His children in His perfect will. As we serve our Lord, let us do so with great enthusiasm.

TOPIC: Unnecessary Excuse

"Saturday, August 09, 2014"

*TEXT: LUKE 14:12-24*

*"Key verse: “And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused” (Luke 14:18)."*
Thomas à Kempis, in one of his books, said: “For a small reward, a man will hurry away on a long journey; while for eternal life, many will hardly take a single step.” This explicitly captured human nature, which is fond of giving excuses to avoid total commitment and consecration to God.
In the passage for meditation today, Jesus Christ gave the parable of the great supper. Despite that “all things are now ready,” those who were invited began to give excuse for not honouring the invitation. The first man made the excuse that he must look at his field. He might have bought the field, which he had not seen, but he could wait for a few days to enable him attend the feast. The second man, who bought new animals, could also have waited. The third man probably referred to the law in Deuteronomy 24:5, which allowed a man to be with his wife, freedom from military service for a year after his marriage. However, such freedom did not forbid social contacts. So, the man should have accepted the invitation.
Angered by this disgusting development, the organizer ordered that different sets of people be brought to the feast instead. He thereafter vowed that “none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.”
This parable by our Saviour, Jesus Christ underscored the danger of rejecting the invitation to receive the offer of salvation. He pointed out that those who are already Christians but are lukewarm, stand the danger of losing their sonship or citizenship of the kingdom of God. Believers are also encouraged to be fully involved in bringing souls to the kingdom of God without neglecting any section of the society. Sometimes, people, who we despise, are those that are willing to receive the message of salvation. So, spare no effort, in bringing famished and sinful souls to the Saviour.
*"THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God is more interested in those who obey and not in excuse givers."*

TOPIC: Disguising? Watch It!

"Sunday, August 10, 2014"*

TEXT: 2 CHRONICLES 18:28-34*

*"Key verse: “And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about him to fight: but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God moved them to depart from him” (2 Chronicles 18:31)."*
Francois de La Rochefoucauld said: “We are so accustomed to disguise ourselves to others that in the end we become disguised to ourselves.”
This was what Ahab, the king of Israel, did not realize until he paid the supreme price with his life. Against his better judgment, Jehoshaphat went to battle in affinity with Ahab the king of Israel. Ahab disguised himself as a common soldier and asked Jehoshaphat to wear the royal robes and act, essentially, as Ahab’s decoy. Jehoshaphat agreed, and that decision nearly cost him his life. The king of Syria personally commanded his troops and told them to seek after the king of Israel and no one else. The Syrian troops saw Jehoshaphat, mistook him for Ahab and pressed upon him. Jehoshaphat cried out to God Who granted him deliverance from the Syrian warriors, having realised that he was not king Ahab after all. Ahab, however, did not escape; an archer whose name was not recorded, shot him and wounded him “between the joints of the harness.” Ahab was carried off the battlefield and later died of his wound.
Can anyone hide from God? No matter how disguised the sinner may appear, God knows every thought of his heart, nay his every imagination and conception. God reads man’s desires even when such desires have not clothed itself in words. Every hidden wish God can interpret. He does not need us to light the candle of our desires with language; He can see the candle before it is lit.
Although the Ahabs of today disguise themselves a hundred times, they will not escape the judgment of God. And though the Jehoshaphat’s of today are put forward to die in battle, their righteousness shall deliver them from the power of the sword. Please, choose righteousness in order to live.

TOPIC: Wisdom Is Precious

Monday 11, August 2014

TEXT: JOB 28:12-28

Key verse: “And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28).

One day, Henry Ford, an automaker, had a challenge with power supply in his factory and asked Charlie Steinmetz, an electrical genius, to build him some generators. Steinmetz did. But one day, the generators grounded to a halt. The repairmen tried their best to fix the problem, but they could not. Ford, who got disturbed, called Steinmetz, the original builder of the generators. Steinmetz tinkered with the machines for a few hours and they roared into life. But Ford got a bill of $10,000. Surprised, he inquired why the bill was so big. Steinmetz replied: “For tinkering with the generators, $10 and for knowing where to tinker, $9,990.” The major repairs on the generators did not cost much, but the wisdom to know exactly what was wrong and how to effect the repairs was the principal cost.

This was what Job emphasized in today’s text. To him, wisdom is precious, perfect and valuable. In other words, wisdom is much better than anything else. He averred that true wisdom “cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx or the sapphire. No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls; for the price of wisdom is above rubies.”

Job’s explanation and exaltation of true wisdom also suggested that it could not be acquired through educational pursuits or research. This has led us to the great revelation that true wisdom is to have the fear of the Lord and to depart from evil.

True wisdom, which is the secret of successful living here on earth and having eternal life, is living righteously and godly, having reverential fear for God that leads to true and pure worship, obeying His word and abhorring all manner of evil. It, therefore, requires that we seek the Lord through repentance, restitution and fervent prayer for the impartation of God’s wisdom.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Whatever makes men good Christians, imbibe it.

TOPIC: It Pays To Be Humble

"Tuesday 12, August 2014"

*TEXT: LUKE 14:1-11*

*"Key verse: “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted” (Luke 14:11)."*
William Carey, who is considered as the father of modern missions, was said to have spent his early years as a cobbler. He later became one of the greatest linguists the Church has ever known, having translated parts of the Bible into about 24 Indian languages. However, when he first went to India, some people regarded him with dislike and contempt. At a dinner party, a distinguished guest, in an attempt to humiliate Carey, said in a loud voice: “I suppose, Mr. Carey, you once worked as a shoemaker.” But Carey responded humbly: “No, your lordship, not as a shoemaker, only a cobbler.” Carey could not claim to make shoes, but only to mend them. That is humility.
From Jesus’ remarks, in our text, it is equally clear that high spiritual or social attainment does not violate humility or personal disposition and good manners toward those who may appear to rank below us in life. The fact that a person is born again does not give him license to breach normal civility or to be rude or despise others including sound protocols.
In most of our churches, it is the norm of some Christians to resist ushers’ directives and be bent on having their way in choosing the place they want to seat. In public places and in traffic, there are others who would resist everyone, including law enforcement agents, and ignore procedures just because of their position in society.
Jesus is teaching us today to imbibe humility. We do not need grab honour or arrogate it to ourselves; God honours and gives place of importance to the one He chooses according to His will and divine evaluation. There is no place for the proud because God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5). To continue in sin is to resist God, which is an expression of pride. Confession, genuine repentance and faith in the atoning blood of Jesus will bestow upon you the saving grace.

TOPIC: Steadfast, Even In Pain

Wednesday 13, August 2014

TEXT: JOB 27:1-10

Key verse: “My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live” (Job 27:6).

The great missionary statesman, Adoniram Judson, admonished: “The motto of every missionary, whether preacher, printer, or schoolmaster, ought to be ‘Steadfast for Life’.”

That, exactly, was Job’s conviction. He had suffered terrible troubles, which he supposed God was the cause. Job was a genuine child of God and he promised to speak the truth. In spite of his predicament, Job still trusted God. His friends, however, insisted that he was suffering because of his evil deeds, which Job argued to the contrary. He did examine himself and was sure, beyond doubts, that he did no wrong to warrant his friends’ castigation and misfortune.

Remarkably, he resolved not to yield to the temptation to voice out wicked or deceitful words, which could prove his accusers right. He also resolved to guard his integrity jealously, clinging tightly to his righteousness and permitting no reproach in his life. Whatever his detractors might say, he was ready to shun all forms of hypocrisy. He was certain that, if he compromised his integrity, God would not hear his prayers, as a prayer of a sinner is an abomination unto Him. God would not provide for, nor preserve the wicked, but He would rather visit him with weeping and death.

Job had a clear conviction of where he belonged and where he was going - heaven. Some Christians today, instead of holding on to their integrity, would rather compromise their faith. They forget that they have been cleansed and saved from their sins. Therefore, they should not trifle with the righteous life, which God has given them. Whatever your situation in life, if God has made you righteous, treasure it more than anything else. Wealth, fame and commendation of men will all die with men on this earth, but it is only righteousness of life that will transport a person from earth to heaven. Be wise, therefore, and remain steadfast in the faith.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Behind Calvary’s cross is the throne of heaven.

TEXT: LUKE 14:25-35

KEY VERSE: “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26).

One day, Dr. J. Wilbur Chapman asked General William Booth to reveal the secret of his success. Booth, after some hesitation, had tears dropping from his eyes and said: “I will tell you the secret. God has had all there was of me. There have been men with greater brains than I have, men with greater opportunities, but from the day that I got the poor of London on my heart and caught a vision of what Jesus could do with them, on that day I made up my mind that God should have all of William Booth there was.” Booth’s total surrender moved Chapman to conviction and he remarked: “I learned from William Booth that the greatness of a man’s power is the measure of his surrender.”

Answering the call to follow Christ always requires a change, but the change may not be in physical location, profession, or status. The change is in our heart, as we take our cross to follow Him. It is a change where we learn the secret of living in righteousness and serving God with eternity in view.

Peter, James and John were partners in a small fishing business on the sea of Galilee. This was their source of support for themselves as well as their families. Yet, when they heard the call to become “fishers of men,” they eagerly responded and followed. Matthew was a tax collector, but he walked away from his life of security when Jesus called. He left everything and followed. Abraham in the Old Testament moved his entire household to follow God without even knowing where he was being sent (Genesis 12:1-5). Moses, at eighty years of age, left the tending of flocks to follow God’s call to lead His people out of bondage to Pharaoh. Elisha slaughtered his yoke of oxen and burnt the plowing equipment as he set out to follow Elijah.

Following Christ is a divine call to lose mundane things to gain eternity of blissful and enduring happiness. As we draw closer to our heavenly Father, we will find His call to be irresistible.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The greatness of a man’s power is the measure of his absolute surrender.

TEXT: 2 CHRONICLES 20:1-19

Key verse: “O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee” (2 Chronicles 20:12).

Jeff Strite, in his sermon entitled, “The Power of Persistent Prayer,” told a story of George Mueller and his prayer life. One day, while on his way to preach in Quebec, George informed the captain of the ship that he needed to be there by Saturday afternoon, but the captain told him it was quite impossible, asking: “Do you know how dense this fog is?” Mueller replied: “No, my eye is not on the density of the fog, but on the living God who controls every circumstance of life. I have never broken an engagement in 57 years; let us go down into the chart room and pray.” Mueller knelt down and prayed one of the most simple prayers. When he had finished, the captain requested that he should allow him to pray too. Mueller put his hand on his shoulder and told him not to pray, saying: “As you do not believe He will answer, there is no need for you to pray about it. Get up, captain, and open the door and you will find that the fog has gone.” When they opened the door, the fog had indeed gone and Mueller was able to keep his engagement.

Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, equally knew the power of persistent prayer. When he was under the threat of being swallowed up by the armies of Moab, Ammon and Mount Seir, who conspired together to fight him and destroy the land of Judah, Jehoshaphat trusted in the Lord and also encouraged all his subjects to believe in the unfailing arm of the Lord. Surprisingly, this fierce battle was fought in an atmosphere of prayers and worship of the majesty of God of all possibilities. The result was victory for Judah and all her inhabitants, because God fought on their side.

If God be for us who can be against us? Jesus is still committed to our lot and still in complete control of our lives. In His perfect timing, He will calm all opposing forces and powers that are working against us. When doubts begin to surface, we must draw closer, hold on even tighter and trust Him ever more.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A man who prays touches God’s heart for ultimate blessings.

TOPIC: God's Heart-Felt Joy

Saturday 16, August 2014

TEXT: LUKE 15:1-10

Key verse: “I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance” (Luke 15:7).

There was this story of a man, who had no legs, but found joy to glorify God. The narrator said: “While walking along a busy street one day, I heard someone singing. His sweet voice was distinguishable even above the noise of the traffic. When I located him, I noticed that he had no legs and was pushing himself through the crowd in a wheelchair. Catching up with him, I said, ‘I want you to know, friend, that to hear wondrous songs from a person in your condition gives everyone else a lift.’ He answered with a grateful smile, ‘When I thought about what I had lost and began concentrating on all I had left, I found much for which I could rejoice.’

This is exactly the joy in heaven for a sinner, who has repented of his or her sin. From our text, Jesus Christ promptly responded to the bigoted but ignorant religious leaders, who thought He was doing wrong by coming close to sinners. Rather, He made it clear that what was paramount in the heart of God and in the kingdom of heaven is that sinners repent.

For a single sinner who repents in a corner here on earth, his or her neighbours and friends may not be aware of his decision, but the whole of the kingdom of heaven is rejoicing that this sinner has repented. Those friends, neighbours, relations, spouses, classmates or business associates who later begin to see the manifestation of repentance in the former sinner may disdain him for his new decision. They may persecute or rail at the new convert, but heaven is already rejoicing over him.

Religion without conversion is therefore worthless and empty. It is an exercise in futility. Heaven is sad that majority of people are on the path of perdition. Do you want to gladden the heart of God? Do you want heaven to rejoice over you? Repent therefore and be converted. Do not care about what people do or say to you.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Seek to cultivate things that will bring joy to God.

TEXT: 2 CHRONICLES 19:1-11

Key verse: “And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD” (2 Chronicles 19:2).

George Washington, former President of the United States of America, said: “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour.”

Unfortunately, Ahab, king of Israel, never recognised God. Yet, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, went out of God’s will to support Ahab in battle. If it were not for God’s mercy, he would have died like Ahab. However, when he returned from the battle, Prophet Jehu, son of Hanani, confronted him for taking such an unwise decision to partner with Ahab. The prophet made him to understand that God was angry with him. Without doubt, it was a serious error of commission for him to have made an unrighteous agreement with Ahab.

Unfortunately today, many Christians make that same mistake, with one form of agreement or the other with the enemies of God. Inasmuch as Christians should offer bridge-building fellowships to other people, they should be conscious of where to draw the line. Jehoshaphat must have had the idea of the kindred spirit in mind when he decided to join alliance with the backslidden, apostate and idolatrous Ahab in battle against the Syrians, but God sent His prophet to rebuke him for this unholy association.

Jehoshaphat’s reaction to the rebuke of the Lord was commendable. Not only did he repent, he also went ahead to bring the people back to the Lord. He destroyed all the idolatrous practices in the land and tried his best to obey God. He equally went to every part of his kingdom, persuading people to turn back to the Lord. God expects that if we have sinned, we should repent and do all necessary restitutions. If we have, by our conducts and examples, wrongly influenced others, we need to prayerfully seek to turn them back to the Lord. This is what the Lord expects from us.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Relationship devoid of righteousness results in ruin.

TOPIC: God Can Heal You

Monday 18, August 2014

TEXT: LUKE 13:11-22

Key verse: “And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God” (Luke 13:12,13).

Dr. Will Mayo, one of the founders of Mayo Clinic Minnesota, United States of America told a story of some patients who were miraculously healed. He said: “We knew they could not live. But I have seen a minister come to the bedside and do something for them that I could not do, although I had done everything in my professional power, but something touched some immortal spark in them and in defiance of medical knowledge and materialistic common sense, that patient lived.”

That was the healing power of God. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, who came to give life in abundance, manifested His healing virtue upon the woman with the spirit of infirmity. When He encountered her, He loosed her from an eighteen-year infirmity. Not even the hypocritical upbraiding of the ruler of the synagogue, who took offence that the woman was healed on the Sabbath day, could dampen Christ’s compassion for her. If men could feed their animals on the Sabbath day, why would this long-suffering woman not be healed on the same day?

Much to the joy of the crowd, Christ illustrated the benefits inherent in the kingdom of God with the grain of mustard seed, which could grow into a great tree, with branches spread far and wide, and providing succour for needy birds. Similarly, He spoke about leaven, which, when used for baking bread, could permeate a bowl of flour and turn it into a big meal. Such is the influence of the grace of God in the lives of men.

Jesus cares for you. He is interested in your spiritual, physical and material well-being. He saves from sin, heals all sicknesses and diseases and delivers from all infirmities. Whatever affliction you may be suffering today, whatever infirmity, sickness or disease you may have been coping with all these years, Jesus is able to take it away. Pray to Him and you will not be disappointed.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds.
