Your Native Name Versus It's English Interpretation? by Nobody: 8:15pm On Jan 10, 2014
My immediate boss and I were arguing this out today. I gave him a copy of one of my old novels...as written by my first pen-name:marvel Fasina June. He asked who named me "marvel...and I told him that it was actually marvelous and it's the English translation of 'my Muslim name....atoheebanh...

He shook his head...he asked if that doesn't have a Yoruba interpretation..,I said it was 'Dara Dara' and he said..,then ur name is data..,I just laughed...

He said he disliked people calling their kids names like happiness, gift, peace, joy,....as long they have indigenous interpretations...

In Yoruba... Happiness should be called 'Ayo'... Gift should be called 'Ebun'.... Peace is 'itunu'.... Joy is 'idinu'...,

I was like youngsters these days don't roll like that... Even dem dey change d name sef..

Abike dey write harbikkey

Chioma dey write sheeormah

Olakunle dey write horlarkunley

Buh I see no reason why we should deny our names..,indigeneoys names....at work they call me... Abeni and I love it... That's my traditional name... If anyone asks me what my name is.,.i say abeni or Bunmilola

A friend once said its dat kinda name 'Awon aye' use to do their evil deeds...like tf I care...l

Whats ur take on this?

Would u rather be called ur local/traditional name... And tell us what it is...

Me first:

Yes... It's Abeni
