Flying Eagles pummel Lagos team in test game

Nigeria Flying Eagles thumped Clinton Football Academy Lagos 6-1 in a test game on Thursday at the FIFA Goal Project in Abuja.

Taiwo Awoniyi put the Nigeria U20s ahead after just eight minutes and six minutes later, Kelechi Iheanacho doubled the advantage from the penalty spot after Awoniyi was brought down on his way to goal.

Point-blank

A minute after he was denied from point-blank range by goalkeeper Faith Oje, Awoniyi grabbed his brace in the 22nd minute courtesy of an assist by Musa Yahaya.

Substitute Tunde Adeniji made it 4-0 two minutes after the interval when he was set up by Sulaiman Abdullahi.

Blunder

Anu Egundipe pulled a goal back for Clinton Academy in the 61st minute, when he fired past goalkeeper Dele Alampasu after a blunder by skipper Musa Muhammed.

Adeniji completed his brace in the 74th minute with an assist from Chidiebere Nwakali.

‘Daddy’ Abdullahi wrapped up the emphatic win 10 minutes from time with an fine individual goal as he ran half way down the pitch before slotting home.

F Eagles: Garba laments despite huge win

The coach of the Nigeria U20 team, Manu Garba has blasted his boys despite the 6-1 win over a Lagos side on Thursday.

Garba, who won the FIFA U17 trophy in UAE in 2013, was upset that the lads missed some chances in the rout.

- This is our first game after a long time, but we have to be more clinical in front of goal after the numerous chances we created, Garba said

Chances

- At this level, we cannot afford to throw away begging chances.

Garba' steams are known to play good football, and score loads of goals.

It's an ongoing exercise. Players are rested for new ones to be tried out. You remember when Muazam, Daddy and a few other regulars were dropped? That's the way it is. All players dropped are still part of the team, just a wake-up call for them to step up their game or be excluded permanently.

Why FC Porto youngster Eze is out of AYC qualifiers

FC Porto youngster Chidera Eze will not be involved in the Flying Eagles final AYC qualifier against Lesotho as he has been listed for pre-season with his Portuguese club.

A top official of Nigeria U20 team said the forward has recovered from a hamstring injury, which he suffered in the team’s AYC qualifier at home against Tanzania, but he will not be available against Lesotho.

“Eze is ruled out of the qualifiers against Lesotho as he will be involved with his club in pre-season training,” disclosed the team official.

Nigeria host Lesotho on August 16 in a first leg clash with the return match a fortnight later in Maseru.

Eze came in as a substitute and scored in 5-1 win to take the Flying Eagles through to the final round of qualifiers against Lesotho, who eliminated Angola.

Eze is one several players promoted from the country’s U17 team, who won a record fourth FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates last year.

Iheanacho, Nwakali released for Manchester City pre-season

Nigeria Flying Eagles have released Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidiebere Nwakali for pre-season training with English Premier League club Manchester City.

“Both Iheanacho and Nwakali have been excused to join Manchester City for their pre-season training this weekend.

They will rejoin us a week to our AYC qualifier against Lesotho next month,” disclosed Flying Eagles secretary Aliyu Auwal Ibrahim.

The youngsters were involved when the Nigeria U20s eliminated their Tanzanian counterparts in the second round of the African Youth Championship qualifying series.

Both Iheanacho and Nwakali have signed a pre-contract with Manchester City after they shone at last year’s FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Iheanacho was named the MVP of the tournament, which Nigeria won in fine style for a record fourth time.

Well, I guess they'll have to be excused one after the other just like the Man City boys. I however know that it'll be in the best interests of the clubs to release them for the actual qualifiers so their stocks can continue to rise.

Golden Eaglets snub ruined
Eagles' WCup run

Former Heartland chairman Fan Ndubuoke has described as self-inflicted Nigeria's inability to go beyond the second round of the ongoing Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

The French side, Les Bleus, defeated the Super Eagles 2-0 on Monday in Brasilia to end the side's fifth campaign at the global football showpiece.

Ndubuoke said Nigeria let down themselves before the world community when they did not consider the reigning Fifa under-17 champions, the Golden Eaglets, good enough for the World Cup.

“Our failure to take any of the Golden Eaglets players particularly those ones that proved themselves was our greatest undoing at the World Cup.

“We got it all wrong from the start when we ruled them out on the premise that they’re too young when our inner voices knew we’re being economical with the truth.

“I didn’t see any reason for the snub. At least five of the Golden Eaglets players should have made it to the World Cup knowing very well that they’re in-form, most prepared and could have rubbed shoulders with the best in the world.

“It’s possible that we may not have gone far with the Golden Eaglets players but the world would have seen that we won the under-17 World Cup with 100% true Nigerians.

“Now we know better that the ongoing World Cup is strictly for the youngsters with the sterling performances of mostly the Under-20 players.

“Rather we decided for super-subs at their respective clubs like Mikel, Moses, Ameobi, among others at the expense of in-form players like Ikechukwu Uche, Chinedu Obasi, Nosa Igiebor.

“Each time Keshi sneezes the NFF catches cold, lots were left in Keshi’s hands and he decided to take players with business interest to the World Cup. It’s wrong for the coach to be bigger than the NFF and the country.

“It’s annoying that we didn’t progress beyond the second round when we’ve a pool of talent to bring us to the fore for the world to admire.

“If we couldn’t beat France to head to the quarterfinals I don’t know who else we would have beaten, we saw it coming but nobody did anything to stop it and now it has backfired,” said Ndubuoke to supersport.com.

Ndubuoke insisted that Nigeria’s football will be the best for it with Keshi’s resignation as the coach of Super Eagles.

Isaac Success returns to Granada for pre-season

Nigeria starlet Isaac Success has returned to Spanish La Liga side CF Granada for pre-season training, but he is expected to join up with the country’s U20 team a week to their African Youth Championship qualifier against Lesotho next month.

The Flying Eagles will host Lesotho in a final AYC qualifier on August 16 with the return leg a fortnight later in Maseru.

Success, who was on holidays in Nigeria recently, has yet to make his long-awaited bow for Granada, but he was an unused substitute in the team’s two matches towards the end of last season.

The former U17 star striker has also yet to feature for the country’s U20s, the Flying Eagles, after he was not released by his La Liga club for the qualifiers against Tanzania recently.

He was top scorer at last year’s African Junior Championship in Morocco.

Flying Eagles stars on trial in Norway

Nigeria U20 midfielders Abdullahi Alfa and Akinjide Idowu are on trials at an unnamed Norwegian club.

AfricanFootball.com gathered that defensive midfielder Idowu, for one, was returning to Europe after he tried out in Sweden a couple of months ago.

Both players starred for Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, which the Golden Eaglets won.

Two other players from that team, defenders Abubakar Aliyu and Samuel Okon, were recently on trials in Ukraine. Okon also tried out at Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, while Aliyu was in Sweden.

Meanwhile, Nigeria U20 striker Taiwo Awoniyi is training with Swedish club Kalmar, who he recently signed a pre-contract with.

iheanacho and nwakali are equally going on pre-season with manchester city and should they perform well who knows, better still they can get a decent loan move.

Ezeh was named in the first team which gives him a better chance of featuring this season. Success will almost definitely make his breakthrough this season.

Iheanacho and Nwakali will most likely be loaned out. Hopefully, they go to a place that helps them develop.

ezeh will be 18 next year so don't expect him in portos main team after the pre-season, but i think porto has a good plan for him by giving such a great opportunity.

They seem not to feature much in Manu Garba's immediate plans. However, they've been going on trials in clubs in the Scandinavia. Wish them the best!

Enyimba rising star Sokari joins Flying Eagles

Enyimba attacking midfielder Kingsley Sokari is expected to join the training camp of Nigeria U20 team in Abuja after he impressed in a cup game last week.

“He looked good against Sokoto North FC in a Federation Cup we watched. He has therefore been given a chance to fight a place in the Flying Eagles,” said Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba.

The Enyimba youngster was also recommended to Manu by El Kanemi coach Salisu Yusuf, who gave Sokari his big break last season at ‘The People’s Elephant’.

“He’s a match winner, who can add value to the Flying Eagles,” simply described Yusuf, who was Samson Siasia's assistant at the 2009 FIFA U20 World Cup in Egypt.

Against Sokoto North, Sokari scored a goal and created another as Enyimba came from behind to win 3-1 and progress to the Round of 32.

Obasi and Godwin were used in the first five games when the U-20 was initially constituted. Guess they didn't impress 'cos they've not been seen after then.

Makanjuola is that skilful Chelsea boy. He is just 16. He can't be drafted to the U-20 team. The onus is on Amunike to include him in the U-17 team and it's to be expected, however we've not seen any green light from Amunike's side. We can only hope on him.

Yeah, Yahaya has joined Totthenham for the pre-season. He's expected to be loaned out to Celta Vigo when the season starts proper.

There is an arrangement on ground to see him return to the country for the Flying Eagles' qualifier.
