WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS

How many of us truly lay our problems before Jesus, why look for non existent miracles when Jesus can solve all your problems : O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

Joseph Scriven was a man acquainted with grief. Born in County Down, Ireland, he aspired as a young man to follow in his father's footsteps as a Royal Marine, but his poor health made that impossible. Then he fell in love and was engaged to be married, but his fiancee drowned before their wedding could take place.

To put as much distance as possible between himself and that tragedy, Scriven then moved to Canada. While living there, he became engaged again, but his fiancee became ill and died before they could be married.

In his grief, Scriven determined to devote himself to a life of service. He was especially known for carrying a bucksaw and cutting firewood for people in need.

Scriven received word that his mother was ill. He couldn't afford to return to Ireland, so he sent his mother a poem in the hope that it would comfort her. The poem began, "What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!" He later submitted a copy of his poem to a religious journal, where it was published. A few years later, in 1866, he died.

Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879) was an unusually gifted and passionate saint. The daughter of a church rector, she was raised in Worcester, England and attended schools in England and Germany. In her love of learning, she grew to become an able scholar and a talented singer and pianist.

The deepest desire of her heart, however, was in “personal spiritual influence upon others”. This led her to value most of all her ability to write; for that reason she expended the majority of her life’s labors in writing prose and poetry that would be spiritually beneficial to the saints.

Havergal suffered poor health and was taken by the Lord at just 42 years of age. But the Lord prospered her ministry; her writings had a large impact in her own day, and several continue to be read and sung today.

As a result of her poor health and declaration from her doctor that she has few months to live, she gave away all her possesion into charity.

The story of “Take My Life” gives a good picture of the kind of passion and joy she had in ministering to others.

This hymn is one of which when I hear makes me unconsciously break down in tears Its lyrics pierces thru the heart, this is a thunderous prayer for every Christian..

Actually the tune to the German national anthem (the Deutschlandlied written by August Heinrich Hoffman) is the same as the hymm ''Glorious things of thee are spoken'' written by John Newton around the late 18th century.....both authors borrowed the tune from an anthem written by the composer Joseph Haydn for the then Austrian Emperor in the 18th century.

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL

This hymn was written after traumatic events in Spafford’s life. The first was the death of their only son from Scarlet Fever in 1870. Second was the 1871 Great Chicago Fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer and had invested significantly in property in the area of Chicago which was decimated by the great fire).

In 1873, Spafford scheduled a ship trip to Europe in order to give his wife and daughters a much needed vacation and time to recover from the tragedy. Spafford sent his wife and daughters ahead of him while he remained in Chicago to take care of some unexpected last minute business. Several days later he received notice that his family's ship had encountered a collision. All four of his daughters drowned; only his wife had survived. His wife Anna sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone …".

With a heavy heart, Spafford boarded a ship that would take him to his grieving wife Anna in England. It was on this trip when he got to the spot where his four daughters perished that he penned those now famous words, When sorrow like sea billows roll; it is well, it is well with my soul..

every hymn that all creatures can Sing
I can't mention them here cos there'r numerous.
started with fanny crosby's hymns and whole of others. its like my soul is addicted to hymns as I can't live without it in a day.
as a roman catholic faithful I started singing at tender aged, join a lot of choir group, been an expert in musical instrument I also wrote and produce many songs.

all thanks to gov. wilcox for uplifting my spirit every sunday at 9pm with his programme titled AN EVENING WITH THE MASTERS on 91.7 radio port harcourt
