I'm a paint and plaster manufacture under the brand name crown paint ( now known as Regal paint) and although I operate an humble company, but I bring my knowledge of chemicals to bear and me and my team are always researching and upgrading with trending chemical additives to give you specialised products that can rival any brand both local and international.

I'm going to give brief insight into the various types of paints commonly used and also post pictures of the nairalanders' projects I've been honoured to supply.

Paint is usually the last finishing in buildings and it adds beauty to the house.
However, paint has gone beyond cosmetics to being a protective coating that acts as the first line of protection against weathering of the building.
There are various types of paints used in architectural structures like emulsion, textured emulsion, matte, satin, eggshell, flex (patterned plaster) varnish, marble trowel, graffix, stucco paint, gloss and so on.

I'm going to touch on the common types used.

Emulsion: this is a water based paint that is used for both interior or exterior. It comes in different grades and prices.
The lower grade and lower priced type of emulsion have low amount of binder in it and lower opacifying pigments. They may last indoors but won't last long outside with exposure to rain and ultraviolet rays. This type of paint needs regular recoating.
The high grade is much costly and has higher pigment and binder which makes them last much longer on the wall and cover much more area due to its more opaque quality.
The quantity of paints that would be required by a high grade paint to cover an area would be lower than that of low grade.
So 3 drums of good grade paint would cover what 4 drums of low grade paint would cover and the low grade paint would be re-coated up to 2 times before the good grade paint needs re-painting not including the labour cost.

Textured emulsion: this type of paint is most ideal for exterior painting and is a very durable type of paint because it has a thick film when applied.
This type of paint doesn't cover as much as emulsion due to its thick film property but if a good grade type is used, it doesn't need recoating for upwards of 15 years.

Matte emulsion: this is basically a very high grade regular emulsion with tiny texture on it. Its also durable and ideal for exterior.
This paint looks beautiful but attracts dirt due to its tiny textured surface.
Its advisable to varnish the paint for easy cleaning.

Eggshell: this is one of the most durable paint and some brands call it matte.
It has very good coverage and durability and it has slight sheen.
It can be cleaned and withstands weathering well.

Satin: this is a water based high sheen paint with very good coverage and also cleanable.
The wall has to be smooth and level otherwise it would highlight imperfections on the wall due to its sheen.
It is used interchangeably with silk.
Ideally silk is slightly lower in sheen that satin and has a higher pvc ratio. Its like a slightly lower satin.
This sheen paints withstand more cleaning when based on acrylic binder. Vinyl based binder paint isn't has tough as acrylic based binder. These are written on label as vinyl emulsion or acrylic emulsion.

Flex patterned plaster: this is basically like textured paint without the textures in it.
Its a thick paste and its applied with trowel and patterned with blank rollers with impressions of various types of designs.
It also has thick film on application and is very durable.

Gloss: this is an oil based paint used mostly to protect metals against corrosion.
Its not ideal for walls as it seals the wall and doesn't allow the wall to breathe.

Mineral paint: I'm not sure if this paint is available in nigeria yet but I produce it.
This is a type of paint that make use of inorganic binder much similar to glass dissolved in water.
While regular paint uses organically based petroleum derivative binders, mineral paints use an inorganic waterglass as the binder.
As a result, its fire retardant, resist acid rain attack, resist ultraviolet rays degradation and reacts chemically with the silica (sand) in the building to become part of the building.
It doesn't form film like regular paint and has very good water vapour permeability and as a result, it is also ideal in waterlogged areas. Its porous nature allow water to evaporate thereby leaving the wall dry to prevent fungal/algae growth and blistering and peeling off of paint.
This type of paint is used mostly in germany and some parts of europe and last decades.
However, due to its very high alkaline nature, only earth pigments can be used to colour it.
It comes in various colours but it doesn't have very bright organically based colourants.

I'm going to be posting some pictures of projects I supplied in subsequent posts.
As usual, comments and questions are welcomed.

Why not include the name/type of paint in your pictures so that we can really visualize what you are saying.

This is graffitex. Its applied mostly outdoors and its more of a plaster than paint.
Its very thick and strong.
This must be the most durable coating.
Its made of mostly silica (treated smooth sand) and other paint materials.
Up to 5 drums of these paint would be required to paint a room.

Stucco paint.
This paint is applied with trowel and polished with a special stainless trowel to give a very smooth finish.
The application method gives it the various patterns and designed.
Its for big boys. And I know that my own stucco paste can be cleaned due to my own formulation. Can't say for other brands.

I will be creating a new thread for each building so as to create platform to discuss on the properties of the paint used and other questions but links of all painting threads would be posted on this thread for easy access.

Distributor of cheap and fast selling pop emulsion paint is needed.
Direct supply to site or for distributor for pop paint of 100 drums upwards would be given for N1900 per drum within lagos and N2000 per drum around ondo, osun, oyo and environs.
I'm still going to update on the mineral paint as soon as I conclude work on it.

This is cement based paint. Mixed on site.
I suppose nothing can really beat this paint in durabilty. Its hard and tough.

Not yet. It is billed to be done this month. The rains have been delaying a lot of the finishing works before the painting. Iam hoping to use the normal August break rains if at all we have this year to do it.

Uncle Gbadexy, I don't know if I have asked you this question before..
Here (USA) we have a paint type called semi-gloss, what is the equivalent of that in Nigeria..
It's a gloss paint but not too glossy as in Gloss paint.. Thank you.

I do obtain prior permission. But the ones of the stucco was obtained through a third party I supplied who used it for a job.
I've since removed it and spoken with the owner.

Its called silk or satin emulsion paint.
Actually, silk and satin are used interchange -ably but they are slightly different.
Both are semi gloss and cleanable but satin has slightly higher sheen than silk. It determined by a pigment volume content. The satin has slightly lower than silk so has higher sheen.
