Where Is PANYA In Nigeria? by datguru: 2:08pm On Jul 01, 2014
seriously, for quite some time now I've been hearing people use the name PANYA. Its usually used or associated to a mischevious person or some body who has spent a long time in the city without any visible achievements. I also heard a music where the guy said " you dey yankee, i dey panya, you dey put eyes for my businees". So what i really want to know is:

1: Is there any place like panya in Nigeria?

2: if yes, where?

3: whats the standard of living and level of civilization in this place?

4: Why is it used this way?

embarassed embarassed

Panya is a small town in Ebonyi state. Its a border town actually, between (ugep) cross river and Ebonyi state. The town is not as developed as my town. Lol. Plus being under Ebonyi state, civilisation will be just normal. You don't expect stuff there

from what I know, 'Panya' stands for those who traveled to neighboring french west African countries after the civil war but never came back, they settled down in those countries, those who came back were broke but they love partying (Olingo) today, the word 'Panya' is used literally to express a foreign country of no return. people also use it to make mockery of those who has stayed long outside the country and came back broke, they say he or she went to 'Panya' grin

also 'Panya' is hustlers' street language (Slang) - meaning 'Spain' e.g if you are making hustling call in a public place and don't want to mention country name, you call Spain 'Panya' make i no talk much before hustlers hack me. grin

There is a lil town in EB called Panya, but the overall usage of Panya in Igbo Lingo connotes Spain.

Equitorial Guinea was one of the major countries that accommodated those who fled before, during & after the civil war. like i said above, some came back 'though empty-handed' but many didn't. those who came back were referred to as the people from Paya.
uptil today, there is still an igbo-speaking community/tribe/region in Equitorial Guinea, historically, they were settlers from Nigeria, mostly south-south & south easterners.

Panya is the old pidgin word for Spain. It comes from the word Espanha which is Spain in Portuguese. in recent times it has been used to to describe Equatorial Guinea which was a Spanish colony and the lingua franca is Spanish
