This was announced in a blog post, Google will shut down Orkut in September of 2014 and focus on Google plus, a social platform which ought to pose a potent threat to Facebook but it hasn’t pulled off much steam despite being publicly available for more than to 3 years.

As at October of 2013, Google plus had a total user base of 540 million and continues to grow. Google sees a brighter future with Google plus than Orkut, one of the reasons why the company thinks dumping latter in favour of the former makes more sense.

The news of Google terminating Orkut shouldn’t bring despair to alot of persons since the social platform was long forgotten. Only a handful of South Americans might be saddened by this development but the impact should be minimal all the same.

Google said in its post, “Ten years ago, Orkut was Google’s first foray into social networking. Built as a ’20 percent’ project, Orkut communities started conversations, and forged connections, that had never existed before. Orkut helped shape life online before people really knew what ‘social networking’ was”
