Lagos — THE Ministerof Urban Development, Mrs Halima Tayo Alao, has described Nnewi, Ibadan and Aba as the dirtiest cities in Nigeria. Speaking at a workshop in Ibadan, the Minister expressed displeasure over the environmental sanitation status of nnewi and ibadan, believed to be the biggest city in West Africa. The Minister said that in spite of the huge amount government spent on the channelisation of Ogunpa River, Ibadan, Nnewi and Aba still remained the dirtiest cities. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/archive2/tblnews_Detail.php?id=43454 |

i have beem to that city, and its nothing to write home about. Buildings are built without planning, roads are too narrow without good shape, majority of the roads there are dead traps |

Op, you have comprehension issue! The write up did not say only Nnewi. It said that Ibadan, Aba and Nnewi are Nigeria's dirtiest cities. So change your subject to read: Ibadan, Aba and Nnewi! |

Minister: Ibadan, Aba are dirtiest cities From Bisi Oladele Do you live in either Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, or Aba, the Abia State capital? If yes, you are living in one of the dirtiest cities in the country, says the Minister of Environment, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Halima Tayo-Alao. She also expressed concern over the moribund Federal Government’s sanitation project in Ibadan, which was targeted at making the city one of the cleanest. But, the sanitation scheme, which the minister revealed was a tripartite project of the Federal and the state governments, as well as investors, has succeeded in Aba with the attendant improvement on the sanitation, waste disposal and recycling. Tayo-Alao spoke in Ibadan while giving a keynote address at the national workshop on the implementation of the Rotterdam Convention, held at the University of Ibadan (UI). The workshop was organised by the BASEL Convention Coordinating Centre of the university. The minister, who disclosed that over N5 billion had been spent on the channelisation of the Ogunpa River, deplored the failure of these efforts of the Federal Government at improving the sanitation of the city. She wondered why the project was yet to be completed despite the N230 million the the Federal Government had paid the contractor. Tayo-Alao explained that environmental issues are no longer the exclusive responsibility of the government, stressing that the state, local government, institutions, corporate bodies and individuals need to work hand-in-hand to address climate change, sanitation and related environmental issues which have been pushed to the front burner in international affairs. Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Femi Bamiro made case for a paradigm shift in the approach of researchers to the issue of environment. He said that since the environment is inter- disciplinary, researchers and academics should get out of their narrow disciplines and incorporate environment in their research works, so that the issue will be seen and appreciated from different perspectives. "Social scientists, educationists, engineers and others should involve themselves in the environment research," he stressed. State Commissioner for Environment,Alhaji Mukaila Aborode, disclosed that sanitation and other environmental issues are key areas of priority to the current administration in the state, pointing out that trucks and skipps had been bought by the government to address sanitation problem. Besides, 200 sweepers are also keeping the city of Ibadan clean daily. |
