It is understandable if soldiers go berserk when one of their own is killed. What happened at Ikorodu Road however was absolutely reprehensible. Officers and men of the Nigerian Army went on rampage, destroying Lagos State Government property (BRT Buses) because one of their own was killed in a road traffic accident by a BRT Bus.

Not minding how the soldier came about being killed in the first place, but going by what we know of uniformed men in Lagos it is almost certain the soldier was probably plying on a BRT lane. Anyway, that is beside the point. Any death, whether by accident or not, is sad and painful, but for men of the Nigerian Army to capitalize on that accident to commit acts of arson and vandalism is not only unacceptable, but also irresponsible. Why don’t they deploy such angst against Boko Haram who continues to kill and maim their colleagues every now and then?
I have as friends men of the Nigerian military establishment who are very responsible and level headed. I shudder to think they would behave in such manner as did their colleagues yesterday on Ikorodu Road, given the same circumstance. It is unlikely. Highly unlikely! So what happened yesterday that the commander of this rampaging army could not control his men? And for the Minister of State for Defense, Musliu Obanikoro to claim that the wanton destruction of BRT buses was carried out, not by soldiers, but by miscreants a'la Area Boys, is not only unintelligent lie but also damned insulting to the people of Lagos.. Mtcheeew!!
