Am a beginner in filmmaking working on a couple of shoots willing to learn from the professionals. Post your works here so we can learn as well as help criticize constructively. Hope this attracts the Gurus.

. Wow! I like the video, Nice coordination and visual effects. Seriously, will like to learn from you. Which editing software do you use? Which camera do you use? Do you use adobe after effect?

Thanks a lot, glad you liked it.

I mainly use FCP7 for editing, however, any of the regular NLE's are more than good enough be it Avid, Premiere or FCP. I do have a full Adobe package but never really use it and After Effects is not a skill I have or even want. I'm more interested in writing and directing. The cameras I own are a couple of DSLRs and a Blackmagic.

I have to say a simple truth - editing software and cameras are not the issue any person interested in film should have. It doesn't really matter what one films on or edits on... there is hardly a soul now that film film on anything less than HD. The issue is people actually taking the time to first learn the basic skills of filmmaking of which there are a million articles and videos online and then taking the time to learn the equipment - for example - what a camera they are going to use can or cannot do.

At the end of the day the effort in learning a skill or various skills is what counts... the only thing equipment does is help a bit. Back to something I said at the start - I have no interest in learning AE. Good filmmaking always has and always will be 'team work'. I'd leave AE to the specialists that know it very, very well - they are there to be hired when the need arises. Far too many of us are into being the 'jack-of-all-trades' - we will NEVER produce anything 'great' that way.
Of course we cannot always hire 'professionals' for every facet of the filmmaking process; especially when we are just starting out and learning; mainly because we don't have the money for it but I believe for EVERY feature film made in Nigeria actual professionals should be used and that will raise our bar much higher.

The right team really makes a huge difference as I'll show with a couple of examples from my own 'short' films -

Une Clope (the older film - every crew member was studying [none less than final year] or had studied film) so it is a much better film due to the crew having much more experience than the 'Sweet Sixteen' crew in which I more or less was the only experienced person there and everything went wrong lol.

Une Clope thread in which I was the DOP and film editor - https://www.nairaland.com/1105305/une-clope-short-film-nsfw

Sweet Sixteen in which I was covering too many roles and issues for it to ever be good - https://www.nairaland.com/866173/new-short-film

We should also never lose faith when things go very wrong but learn from the experience, figure out what the weak points were and try our best to improve, learn even more and not to make the same mistakes again. I hope by the time I make my first feature film I will be a far better director.
Terribly sorry this post is a bit long, hopefully some people that visit here can learn lessons from this too.
