OkijaAmaka: The Anambra State government has commenced the construction of the proposed 50 billion naira West Africa Trade Centre in the outskirt of the commercial city of Onitsha.
The international trade centre, which had its location at Ogbunike junction along Onitsha-Enugu road, would help decongest both markets and population in Onitsha metropolis.
Anambra State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr Robert Okonkwo, while conducting reporters round the 50 hectare span project yesterday said the centre would provide 25,000 jobs as well as create a first-class one-stop business environment for the West-Africa region.
He noted that the first phase of the project would be ready within six months of the official ground-breaking.
According to him “the state government has acquired well-sited and choice 50 hectares of land for the project at the 2-in-1 Louis Odumegwu-Ojukwu complex in Ogbunike community, which is just after Onitsha metropolis”
“The centre will be constructed in phases. It will have over 100 blocks of shopping malls with modern facilities with eateries, offices, nursery and hotels, car park and a police post”
“You know that Onitsha is the largest market in West Africa. We have decided to expand the market by approving the construction of the trade centre,’’ Okonkwo said.
According to him, the establishment of the centre in the South-East especially in Onitsha was to encourage and consolidate on the business acumen of Ndi-Igbo.
“Social vices in the South-East would be reduced as the centre would create employment and improve the well-being of our people’’
However, President of Consolidated Market Unions in Anambra, Chief Obiorah Onyema appealed to Governor Peter Obi to invest in the shops in the centre as a means of poverty alleviation since most residents of the state were trade-oriented.
Onyema said “ Governor Obi is encouraged to see if he would possibly acquire 4000 shops in the centre and distribute same to women and unemployed graduates selected from the 177 communities in the state, who are interested in being self-employed”

Antivirus92: after constructing the new market, we will be taking some of ur people from ogun,oyo,osun,ekiti,ondo to anambra to spend about 2 weeks. We hope that with that,they will have to see cement block houses for the first time in their poverty stricken lives. Hope that helps
