Southern delegates at the ongoing national conference yesterday rejected the Consensus Building Group’s recommendation of 18 per cent derivation for the oil producing states in the South- South.

The recommendation is aimed at finding a solution to the festering issue of resource control threatening the conference.

The Consensus group has also suggested payment of five per cent monthly allocation from government revenues to the North-East, North-West and North Central regions for rehabilitation purposes as a result of insurgency in the regions.

But delegates from the South-West and the South- East in a swift reaction expressed dissatisfaction to the recommendations.

The South-West delegates and their South-East counterparts had earlier rejected the move.

Presenting the outcome of the Consensus Group meeting to the plenary yesterday, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, who spoke on behalf of the zonal leaders, said the group was only motivated to provide an avenue to reach consensus rather than voting in making the recommendations.

“We do not believe that voting will really move us forward,” he said.

Gambari told the plenary that “one pole began with the position that was embodied in the recommendations of the committee on devolution of power all the way from 13 per cent to 15 per cent to 17 per cent and not less than 18 per cent”

Smart move by the Northern delegates. This divides the South along oil producing and non-oil producing states while keeping the difference with the North.

You have to admire sheer audaciousness of the Northern delegates. Unfortunately, (or rather, fortunately for those us strongly averse to "one" Nigeria) this only brings the demise of our fake federation closer.
