Career choice is a very important determinant of how your future will turn out. Sadly, I have come to notice that Nigerian youths still grapple with making a befitting career choice as students - secondary and university. Some are either coerced into it by family pressures, others follow their friends in their chosen career path, others happen to find themselves spontaneously making the choice.

The objective of this thread is to enable professionals brainstorm with students who are still in the deciding phase to make a sound choice.

I would appeal with the mods to leave this thread in the education section because majority of the career choice challenges we have are mostly on this section and not the career section as would have been expected. The reason for this is not far-fetched. The bulk of the people with these issues are students who frequent this section .I've noticed this after 4 years of consistently posting on this section of Nairaland.

Personally, I've had a taste of both Arts, Commercial and Science based courses at basic and advanced level. As much as I have committed myself to developing myself in these areas regardless of what I'm studying in school, I've been privileged to taste opportunities in these areas. I have also been privileged to make life-changing contacts with professionals in almost any field you can think of. So I'm going to rely on my experience, my contacts and most importantly professionals in this forum to help young people out there.

Feel free to share your career choice challenges and we'll help you brainstorm.

When you stand on your feet, you can only stand tall. When you stand on the shoulder of giants, you will definitely stand taller.

Good morning. Your question is multi-modal in dimension. I'll try as much as possible to narrow it down.

It's okay for someone who did art subjects in secondary school to develop interest totally in another field after secondary school. Interest is the beginning of a successful career pursuit in a desired field. So if the interest has been developed, it is a good start.

Furthermore, any individual who chooses to develop career interest in a field different from what he was previously trained in secondary school, should be ready to brace up with challenges in that field. That's where being realistic comes in. Being realistic entails that you not just have the interest, you also have what it takes to successfully land your ambition - else you'll be seeking a futile adventure with concurrent waste of time.

In the light of this, if an arts student wants to do medicine or any medical-related course, he/she should understand the commitments involved and work hard towards achieving it. It is indeed very possible. What will make it okay or not , will be how it would turn out.

What made this question arise?

I think the squabble is between public health as relates to doctors and other health professionals.

Anybody can do a post graduate degree in public health. MPH or whatever. My mom has a PhD in public health. She was originally trained as a nurse.

But not everybody can have a specialist qualification in public health. The Fellows of the Royal College of Public Health, West African College of Community Health and National College of Community Health who specialize in public health are all specialist public health practitioners. And you need a primary medical degree (MD, BDS, or MBBS)to proceed on that quest.

I hope what I'm answering you is what I hope it is.

Have a lovely weekend.

yes doc thanks.

It was actually a dialogue deciding weda bsc in microbio, biochem or medical related courses can go for MPH. True?

And put me through on what this MPH entails.

Thanks a lot

Good day dr Lomaxx.

I have been a hugh fan of urs, I have been following u even before I joined nairaland and I have been impressed my ur vast knowledge on medical related issues especially..

But one thing I don't seem to understand about u is how u combine medical school and distraction.

No doubts you are good at getting girls (have gone tru every single one of ur post and have tried some of ur lines on girls and it worked.. thanks to u)
and u are incredibly intelligent too.

I have learnt alot from u and i am always challenged each time I think about u..

OK now back to the topic.

I am good at math physics biology and chemistry equally..( tho I hate math a little bit because I'm never sure of my answer after a solution) I prefer reading.

I am equally very competitive and confident.

I don't talk much, I believe in action.

I care about a rewarding and lucrative career with future prospect.

these are some of my qualities/personalities..

with this, am I cut out for medicine or engineering?

i took jamb last year but couldn't meet the cut off for medicine and same happened this year. is that a sign I'm not cut out for medicine?

I want to do what I love and at the same time make big bucks but now I don't know what I love anymore.
please what do I do?
how do I know what I love?
or should i just go for engineering?

also at what age is a boy supposed to have a girlfriend?
at what age is he supposed to have sex?
does having sex make me a sex addict and less intelligent

please help me out, I'm on the verge of taking a big step and I don't want to make mistakes..
thanks.

Good morning.
I didn't intend to reply your post this late. I was banned by Antispambot for a couple of days.

I want to start by saying that you should not hate any subject. You may love some more than others, but don't hate it. When you don't hate a subject, you will have an innate desire to improve, no matter what.

Every career is rewarding. What it depends on is who is making the career choice. There is no inherent prospect in any career- the individual involved defines the prospects. If you are proactive, smart, willing to learn and well-oriented, you're set out to succeed.

Deciding between medicine and engineering should be a choice you make and you're ready to defend. I never liked biology from the onset. Maths was my thing. I had an A1 in WASSCE in Mathematics, I was perfect in Calculus but I made a medicine choice, and I also knew I had to like biology. But till date, I don't like it as much as I like mathematics. I made a medicine choice and I'm defending it. If I made an engineering choice, I would have defended it as well.

Don't base your career choice on subject preference, your attitude towards them might change in the future. Choose a career because it is what interests you and it's what you are willing to do. Choose a path, weigh the pros and cons and make a perfect strike.

As for writing JAMB last year and this year and not making it, I hope you learnt lessons. One important thing you shouldn't do is waste time. At the end what is important is being the best in whatever you're doing and doing it with the right attitude and packaging. If I wrote jamb the first year for medicine, and didn't make it, I would have done something else. I believe I can fit into any career path and industry- thats because I'm flexible to circumstances. I know a couple of my friends who wrote jamb for a couple of years for medicine and finally had it. To them, medicine was everything.

I believe with your personality mix, you'd make a good engineer. Remember it's not what you do, but how well you do what you do.

About the girls, I don't know if I'm just lucky or if it's me. When you're focused in what you're doing primarily, every other thing will fall in place. Maintain a primary focus, socialize when necessary and life will fill in the lacunae. I don't believe you should worry yourself about girls. They'll come when they will. The most important thing is to maintain a primary focus. And about sex, the same applies. Maintain a focus, and life will happen when it will/should.

I believe that u writing jamb twice and not getting the cut, doesnt make u not fit.

Medicine is a hard course to get in, but passion is the driving force.

Most good doctors today, i believe they would tell u same story that, getting in wasn't easy.

If u so love medicine, go for it. Ur previous failure only tells u, u need to put much effort, coz medicine is so competiive.

Some pals could get like 280 jamb and not get in, it varies according to competition.

Dont be so quick to judge if u're fit or not with mere corrupt external exams like jamb.

Answer dis.

Ur not meeting d cutoff, what caused it?
Is it biology?
I believe its only biology and maths that makes d difference in ur utme subjects, was it biology dat lowered ur score? I don't think so.

When u should judge wether u are fit for medicine is when u get in and can't cope with d course, den u should be certain.

Sorry, if there are typo-errors

hope dis helps?

Goodluck!

Good afternoon Dr Lomaxx. You are enlighten and knowledgeable. I have these questions please.
1. What are the career prospect of a math grad?
2. What are your experiences with first class math grad?
3. Is math a good course to read in terms of future prospects?
4. In few weeks time I will be in final year (NCE), what uni can you advice me to proceed to in terms of competition in math (please consider strike, school fees, distant from lagos and the likes)?
5. Where can a math grad work (departments) in banking sector, oil and gas firm, multinational companies, medical field and telecommunication industries.
I have more questions but not to bore you with it, will ask some other time.
Thank you in anticipation for your response.

Question 1, 3 and 5 are related, so I'll handle it like a bolus. Mathematics is an excellent course choice in the university. It makes you think analytically and many industries need analytical thinkers. That's the natural edge you have with a degree in mathematics. Like I will always say, the prospects in any field is defined by the individual involved. With a degree mathematics, prospects are taken to another level entirely.

You could go into Finance(Quantitative Finance, Operations Research, Actuarial Finance etc), IT, Consultancy, Management, Economics etc. You could work as a financial analyst, credit analyst, or a programmer. A mathematics degree affords you a versatile career choice in these areas. All you need to do is pick an area you have interest in and start working towards it from day 1. You could work basically anywhere. All you need to do is know the industry you're set out for and develop the relevant skills & qualifications required.

2) I know a friend that studied Applied Mathematics in one of the state universities, graduated with a 2.2, got some IT certifications and landed a job with Nokia one year after NYSC.

A brother to one of my friends graduated with a 4.49 in one of the federal universities. He's currently doing a PhD in Quantitative Finance in the US.

There are a lot of success stories with Mathematics out there. You need to pattern your steps from Day1. Know what you want and set out for it.

4) There are a couple of good schools that offer the subject. I would advise you don't study Mathematics in isolation. You could do Maths&Statistics, Maths&Economics. It gives you a natural edge.

Good luck.

thank you Sir. I would have love math/physics but no south west uni offer that. Am a science student so math/econ is out (my potential- ''background''), not too good in statistics (my strenght is pure math). Is there any professional course(s) I should watch out for? Or better still, your advice .

First, you need to have options of where you would direct your professional brainstorming strength after graduation. Then do a research on what it takes, and how you can be above the next Mathematics graduate seeking the same opportunity. This is when you'll have an idea of professional courses to do. Assuming you want to go into Finance, tailor your focus into that area and research on sub-areas that are relevant to the industry you desire. Go to LinkedIn and look at professional profiles of folks who have made similar choices in the past, and research on how you can have an edge. You could build a prototype of your would-be CV with this information as your guide. Do this and you're tailor-made for excellence.

I want to start by saying that there is always room for improvement. There is no hard and fast rule that says if you didn't do well in Mathematics last year, you wouldn't do well this year. The difference between last year and this year or between this year and next year would depend on the choices you are willing to make, the hours you're willing to devote to Mathematics and the passion with which you'll devote to pursing what you're set out for.

Let me challenge you with my story. I was an Arts student from the onset. I spent SS1 to SS3 doing Arts subjects. I started developing a flair for science subjects in SS2- which was seemingly late, but I didn't mind. I studied Science subjects during my spare time with WAEC syllabus and some textbooks I bought. There was no science teacher to guide me. Just after SS2, I decided to attempt Nov/Dec WASSCE in Science and Arts subjects. I dealt a perfect strike to Arts subjects, I had a C5 in Physics, with an E8 in Chemistry(SS2).

In SS3, I learnt from my pitfalls and gave the examination another try after I was done with May/June WASSCE in Arts. I had all distinctions - the reason I'm enjoying scholarships many students dream of. Someone offered to sponsor me in University by just seeing my O'levels. It was that good. I wasn't satisfied with O levels. I went on to do Cambridge A levels in Sciences.

So my brother, you can either sit there to sulk and bemoan your Mathematics predicament or you can fix the errors while you still can. Strive to improve in Mathematics. Get UTME syllabus, a good textbook, a notebook, and UTME past questions. Give yourself a deadline and go over the syllabus at least twice. Solve as much as you can for each topic. The key to knowing Mathematics is frequent solving. If you have questions, meet people who are better to help explain.

By all means, strive to develop yourself. You'll need this attitude when you're out there chasing your career path.

As for law, do it if you want to. Are you flexible enough to accommodate the consequences of a chosen career path?? Think through it properly and make a choice.

When you make a choice, defend it. Remember, there's always room for improvement.

For a developing country like Nigeria, Architects occupy a central position. For every family, business, industry, and government that needs a design, an architect is involved. With a degree and professional expertise gotten through years of experience, an architect well-honed in his/her design skills is set out for:

- Industrial Design
- Federal and State Government Ministry of Works
- Housing
- Highway and Civil Construction
- Consultancy.

Most Nigerian families, sooner or later, would need an Architect.

Remember, there's always room for improvement.
..tnx very much

Sadia1992: Hi mr lomaxx. Im an art stdnt wit a worst mathematical background although my mission bfr i movd to art clas was dat i want to study law bt wen i get to ss2 my broda choosd economics 4 me 2 study an av fal in lov wit d course an afta i sat 4 dis year jamb my score was so low espcialy in math.sud i continue aimin to study economics or i sud chang to law..tnx in anticipation
dr. Lomaxx has said it all.

Let me add.

Ur mission for opting into art was to study law.

That has been a normal thing, example dr. Lomaxx moved from art to science to study medicine.
Likewise my only motive of opting science was to study medicine and nothing more.

Such scenerio is prominent.

Just ask ur selve the following

1. Why was i loving law?
2. What changed now?
3. Do i still love law now i love economics?
4. Why did my bro. Advised me to opt econs?

If u don't want to be like a chameleon with no definite colour, go for what u love most, if not ur sis may come and advise u to do engineering and u may love it, thereafter ur uncle may advise u to do medicne and u may love it too.

What i'm saying in essence is that, don't let people's dictation win urs.

If u don't like maths, its different from you don't know maths. So which is it?

If u don't like maths, its ok. But u must not be scared of maths. Some people are good in a particular subject, but they pick no intrest in it, there only read it just to pass ur exams.
Like dr. Lomaxx will always say "don't hate any subject".

If u don't know maths. Then that means u need to work hard, always be on calculations, try to cultivate d habit of solving than reading, that way u wud improve. Make it a habit.

If u don't like maths, i'd suggest u find back ur passion for law(a reading course).

If u don't know maths, then strive to improve and try your economics again(a solving course).

Goodluck to you!
