What The Health Sector Needs Is Privatization. by waterhouse071(m): 1:45pm On Jul 12, 2014
The lasting solution to the incessant tussle betweendoctors and other health workers will be theprivatisation of the health sector in nigeria andfinancial empowerment of nigerians by NHIS, so thatcitizens are going to be capable of paying theirhealth bills in the private hospitals. When thishappens, the hospital owners( for example Dangoteor Wale Adenuga not the government owning theteaching hospitals and tertiary medical centers) willknow what to do so as to efficiently run theorganisation. Then all hospital activities will bepatient oriented. So, consultant cardiothoracicsurgeon or endocrinologist will not have to fight thelaboratory technichians, nurses or cleaners foranything because all health practitioners will knowtheir respective importance in hospital which willadequately be compensated accordingly. Those thatsacrifice their life to spend 6+X year as medicalstudents and several years as resident doctors tobecome consultants will not have to go on strikebecause nurses feel doctors' salaries are too much. Then doctors will be happy to render their servicesand save lives. The hospital owners will also realisethat the role of nurses, pharmacists, laboratorytechnicians who call themselves by various titlessuch as matrons, CNO are different from doctors, and that various fields have their limitations. The function of the hospital is to care for the sick not for power struggle. As long as the government controls the health sector, this sacred function will never be achieved and the patients will continue to be at the receiving end of the strike actions. Even if the federal government grants the demand of the doctors, JOHESU will commence another strike and the patients will suffer more as the viciuos cycle of misplaced priority continues. Privatization is the way out. We all know that whatever sector Nigerian government run is usually a mess. When the government was in charge of the telecommunication sector, how many nigerians benefited from the services provided by NITEL? But when MTN and GLO got involved ALL nigerians (including villagers, farmer, market women) benefited irrespective of their social class. The same thing can happen in the health sector whereby ALL nigerians will have access to world class health serviced such as haemodyalisis, organ transplant, radiotherapy, CT and MRI scans, screening for cervical cancer, etc. When that time comes, our hospitals will serve their sacred and unique purpose of saving lives, then various health practitioners will focus on giving their respective best to those who the hospitals truely belong- THE PATIENTS. GOD bless Nigeria.

And you think that non-specialist doctors will get a job. It goes both ways.

You don't need to be specialist doctor to get a job.Presently in most Private hospitals, the majority of their doctors aren't. Specialists.
Finally, you wrongly assumed that the reason doctos(like all others professionals) go to Universities is just to get employment

What other reasons For six years you're telling me is volunteer duty or vocational calling or some religious sh!t, I've seen enough to know when somebody is being economical with the truth.

Once privatisation sets in, I won't need the help of a non specialist doctor at all. I've got to get my money's worth instead of wasting it seeing someone who isn't an expert in the field. Mushroom private hospitals can't afford to pay specialist and who says I can't afford the best. Meanwhile, specialist who knows and worth his/her onion often works with specialist in other professions to achieve the best.

@ topic, the writeup is swerved fully on loggerhead between doctors and others not necessarily on the benefit to Nigerians, more of what doctors have to gain and how others will lose big time if privatisation takes place. I will rather approve an NHS styled management than giving it out to a bunch of businessmen who knows nothing about medicine/hospital but how to maximize profits.

Nigeria is NOT great because many Nigerians can't think deeply.Doctors,Pharmacists,Lawyers etc go to universities firstly to become better persons( getting paid employment is just one of the advantages of this betterment).
There are many doctors and other professionals who never worked as paid employees and rather employ other people and many more who only work as employees for a short period.
Specialist doctors are the peak of the medical pyramids and are FEW in every Country.
There is NO country where only specialist doctors attend to patients.
If you have money(as you are boasting) you can always receive specialist medical servives in the super private hospitals (like EKO,St.Nicholas,Lagoon,Modulla in Kano,Nordical)
