How to know your soil status: Test your soil's pH level to determine if lime is needed. A pH test measures the soil's alkalinity or acidity. When the pH is above 7.0, the soil is said to be alkaline; when below 7.0, it is acidic. A pH level of 6 to 7 is ideal for most grasses. If your soil is too acidic, use a lime application. Plantains ripen slowly over the course of days. The length of the ripening process depends on two qualities: the color of the plantains when you purchase them and the color you want them to become. For example, if you need black plantains for a baking recipe and you purchase green plantains, you could buy the fruit up to two weeks in advance of using them. Place plantains on your kitchen counter when you bring them home from the market. Leave them out to ripen at room temperature. The plantains should reach your desired color within one or two weeks. Transfer the plantains to a refrigerator to halt the ripening process.

Suitable mulch material can be obtained from trees which were slashed when the fields were cleared and which are growing again; or from a deep-rooted legume shrub called Flemingia congesta or F. macrophylla. F. congesta is seed drilled in the middle of the 3 m plantain alley. It can be difficult to establish, but from the second year onwards it grows vigorously. It can reach a height of approximately 2.5 to 3 m if left unpruned, but in the field it is cut back 4 times a year to a height of about 1.5 m.

Plantains are eaten as a vegetable and are cooked prior to consumption. They are an important component of many dishes in Western Africa and Caribbean countries. In addition, the leaves of Musa species can be used as a source of fibre for thread, cloth string, thread or can be used as thatch and roofing. The plants are also grown as an effective source of shade for other crops.

Plantains, like other bananas. require a hot and humid environment. Ideally, the average air temperature should be about 30°C and rainfall at least 100 mm per month. Rainfall should be well distributed throughout the year and dry seasons should be as short as possible. Irrigation is not suitable nor economically worthwhile for plantains grown by the family farmer. but may become necessary when larger fields are cultivated in areas with a long dry season.

Reduced plant growth; reduced fruit production; tunnels may be visible in corm as rounded holes up to 8 mm in diameter; plants wilting and toppling over; destruction of root system; plant death; adult insect is a hard-shelled beetle which is almost black in color; adult is commonly found between leaf sheaths; larvae are creamy-white, legless grubs with a red-brown head

Bananas and plantains constitute the fourth most important global food commodity (after rice, wheat and maize) grown in more than 100 countries over a harvested area of approximately 10 million hectares, with an annual production of 88 million tonnes (Frison and Sharrock, 1999). The all year round fruiting habit of bananas puts the crop in a superior position in bridging the ‘hunger gap’ between crop harvests. It therefore contributes significantly to food and income security of people engaged in its production and trade, particularly in developing countries. In Africa they provide more than 25% of the carbohydrate requirements for over 70 million people (IITA, 1998). Eastern and Southern Africa produces over 20 million tonnes of bananas which accounts for 25.58% of total world output (Karamura et.al., 1999).

The capital required to setup a plantain farm can be considered to be moderate but it is indeed a very profitable business to go into as an entrepreneur who lives in Nigeria or in any country with a tropical climate. The basic thing you need to do to get started with your own plantain farm is to secure farming land, prepare the land and then cultivate your plantain.

The fact that loads of people eat plantain makes plantain farming a very lucrative business. Plantains can be eaten when fried or cooked. Plantains can be processed into various forms; it can be processed as juice, and it can as well be processed as plantain chips, amongst others.

This type of Soil moisture Content is measured in m3.m-3 (so howmuchofacubic metre is water out of the entire cubic metre of soil sample). Alternately, the Volumetric Soil Moisture content can be referred to as a % of volume (which is much easier).

To produce a heavy bunch, plantains always need some extra nutrients. These can be applied in the form either of inorganic fertilizers or organic fertilizers (mulch, manure or ash from wood fires). Inorganic fertilizers have the advantages of easy handling and concentrated nutrients. Organic fertilizers are very bulky, yet they manifest many important characteristics. They improve soil moisture retention, weed and erosion control, soil porosity and biological activity. Visit our website: www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

Plantain is an Alterative meaning that it is one of about 100 plants that clean and correct impure conditions of the blood and the eliminative tissues and organs. kenfarm Research Team explains that although many herbs might work fast on a given organ to relieve engorgement to really be an Alterative herb it must do the job slowly but surely, toning the organs as well as cleaning the blood. This herb does that and can be used completely. The roots, leaves, flowers and seeds can be used internally or externally.

Bananas and plantains belong to the family Musaceae and are cultivated throughout the humid tropics and sub-tropics. This crop is perennial with a faster relative growth rate compared to other fruit crops, while producing fruit all year round. Because of their nutritional value, bananas and plantains are considered the fourth most important crop worldwide after rice, wheat and corn.

Molecular DNA-based markers are powerful tools for gaining insights into individual genetic characteristics, and for determining allele frequency. DNA markers were developed first for humans, then applied in plants, and subsequently for the analysis of the banana genome (Figure 2). This feature allows plant breeders to select only those individuals with desirable characteristics and significantly reduce the selection time. In this chapter, we discuss the development and applications of molecular marker technology to improve some of the commercially available Musa cultivars and to assess their genetic diversity.

The weeds are too much ....for herbicides to penetrate properly, kindly use man power to weed first and do not allow the weed to compete with the plantain as this will reduce the yield production.... After weeding please apply some fertilizer, and the after one week use glyphosate herbicides and never let it touches the leaves
