From its signature brown-coloured rooftops to its great monuments and landmarks, the historic city of Ibadanlocated in the South-Western region of Nigeria and populated by over 1.3 million people, has the highest broadband speed in the country, according to Ookla, the global leader in broadband testing.
Based on test data analyzed from 1,002 unique IPs taken in the city between Mar 1, 2014 and Mar 31, 2014,Ookla’s NetIndex found that Ibadan’s Internet users experience up to 7.4 Mbps download speeds and 5.8Mbps upload speeds.
At the moment, Ibadan still has a very long way to go when compared with the global average download speed pegged at 17.3 Mbps, while upload speed at 7.8Mbps. But when you compare broadband speeds in Ibadan to those in other cities in Nigeria/Africa, you would see that Internet users in Ibadan are living in an Internet paradise.
For example, the bustling cities of Lagos and Abuja, where one would expect broadband speeds to be high especially due to their commercial and capital city status, have about 4.72Mbps and 4.13mbps average download speeds respectively. Even the city of Port Harcourt beats both cities with an average broadband download speed of 5.02Mbps, according toOokla.
While sufficient ISP data isn’t available forOoklato display the top broadband providers in Ibadan, our findings and analysis show that Smile Telecomsshould be number one in the city, given that it first launched its almost perfect service (based on customer reviews) there last year.
Besides, Smile is currently the best broadband provider in Lagoswith download speeds of up to 9.48Mbps, according toOokla‘s data, after only launching in Februarythis year.
So if you’re an Internet / digital entrepreneur, would you consider moving to Ibadan given the city’s reliable power supply, low-cost of living and high-speed broadband connectivity, when compared to other Nigerian cities?
