A pregnant woman is like a soil on which plants grow. The growing life will only live by the nutrient it gets from her mother during gestation, lactation and afterwards.

Pre-Pregnancy Nutrition

The woman who is about to concieve should take note of the following:
i. Her weight should be moderate. Being underweight or obese, could pose a great risk. This is why some experience abortion and miscarriage.
ii. She should ensure she eats well. Her diet must supply her adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals. Folic acid is very important here, to prevent birth defects.

Nutrition during Pregnancy

At the first trimester, what she eats is very important. Vegetables, Milk, Fruits, Animal proteins, Grains, in short not just a balanced diet, but one that is adequate. She is advised to take vitamin B supplements and folic acid. Vitamin A should not be consumed to the toxic level.
Do you know that about 2400 to 2600 calories per day is required to make a baby?

During the course of pregnancy, she ought to gain about 12 Kg of weight. This is lower for the obese, and more for the underweight.
This is to ensure the baby is of the right weight, about 3kg to 4kg.

How brilliant your child will become depends on you. You have no choice than to watch the adequacy of your diet.

Post-Delivery Nutrition

You, as a woman with child, should eat healthful foods, that is nutrient dense foods.
This will fortify the nutrient content of the milk. Except in severe cases, NEVER GIVE your baby infant formular in its first 6 months of life, GIVE BREAST MILK EXCLUSIVELY.
You should begin the introduction of new foods, including infant formula starting from its 7th month of life. It is also good to continue giving your baby breastmilk for 1 or 2 years.
The nutrition of your child during gestation, and in his first 2 years, will tell how healthy he will be for life & what he will be in future.

You may need to see dietitian or a nutrition specialist. There are many taboos about nutrition during pregnancy, you should be wary of these.
