Hundreds of youth on Wednesday protested the moves to impeach the Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Al-Makura by the State Assembly.
The youth barricaded Mararaba in Karu Local Government Area; Lafia city round about, Keffi; and major roads in Akwanga Local Government Area carrying placards with inscriptions such as “leave Almakura for us”.
They set bonfires in strategic areas, including Emir Palace Road, Doma Road, Keffi-Mararaba Road, and attempted to block the federal highway before the police intervened.
The protest resulted in heavy gridlock on Keffi-Abuja Road with the youth calling on the state legislators to rescind their actions.
The Nasarawa State Assembly had on Monday directed that Mr. Al-Makura be served with notice of impeachment for alleged gross misconduct.
The police spokesperson in Nasarawa, Ismaila Numan, said the command increased security in major towns following the protest.
Mr. Numan said the police dispersed the youth before the protests could get out of control in all the affected towns.
He said no life or property was lost and that police officers had been deployed to strategic locations to forestall any breach of the peach.
“We have also intensified patrol across the nooks and crannies of the state to ensure the security of lives and property,” Mr. Numan said.
He assured members of the public of adequate protection, and urged them to go about their normal business without fear of molestation.
