Curiosity: How And Why Did The Figures (419) Be Used To Mean "Scam", "Fraud"? by Nobody: 2:30pm On Jul 20, 2014
Hmmmm, they say who asks question, gets an answer and be enlightened.

I have just been thinking to what prompted the usage of the figures (419) to mean scam which is recognized internationally. Where (which part of the world) did the formation come from and who were those responsible for it? What year did this happen? What necessitated the formation even after real words like "scam", "fraud" etc were already formed and used?

Answers i need pls.

^^^ Exactly due to the above.
Criminal Code Act-Part VI - Nigeria Law

419. Any person who by any false pretence, and with intent to defraud, obtains from any other person anything capable of being stolen, or induces any other person to deliver to any person anything capable of being stolen, is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for three years.

If the thing is of the value of one thousand naira or upwards, he is liable to imprisonment for seven years.

It is immaterial that the thing is obtained or its delivery is induced through the medium of a contract induced by the false pretence.

The offender cannot be arrested without warrant unless found committing the offence.

Serious about this? Then why do people use it exclusively like it was not a section in the law? And why the global recognition if related only to Nigeria?

It's normal naah, it's just like the name of a character that's popular or a slang word that got global attention, its like asking why is weed called Mary Jane. 419 can be said to be a synonym for a confidence trick or any other deceptive crime.

Because Nigerians started those types of scams and normally are the ones that perpetrate it. There are specific scams/frauds that are called "419" scams and 8 times out of 10 was originated from either Nigeria or a Nigerian person.

When that offence was still scarce, anytime someone reported the case, police will be like, "another 419(case)!"
And when someone ask the reporter how far? He will reply, "Police say na 419."
That's how the Numbers come about to represent the offence. lolz!

My thanks to those who explained the origin of 419.

The above theory seems more plausible, a friend had said to me it was the number plate on Tinubu's car, (the car he used for his cocaine runs in the USA), thanks for this enlightenment.

This is an eye opener.

I guess N1000 would be like N350 000 at the time the Criminal code was being written.

You find the Origin in Psalm 41:9 " Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me."
