Hey Bro, I am a warrior too. The best thing is to nip crisis in the bud. Once you feel it coming on, take the necessary medication or check yourself into a clinic.

To the glory of God, I only had crisis once in my stay in the University. Tell God you don't want crisis at all. Make sure you eat well and also take a lot of water daily.

I take about 3 litres daily back in school.

Above all, trust in God who has given you life and have faith in Him.

The pain faced by sickle cell patients in unbearable and cannot be understood by anyone other than the sickle cell patient.

Acute pain crisis in sickle cell patients is best controlled by opioids. If paracetamol and NSAIDs doesn't relive you, step it up to tram. You will need a prescription for this. You've gone to hospital to see the doctors?

The best way to control a crisis is to prevent one.

-No alcohol

-No smoking

-Take lots of fluids. ESP in hot weather and when you exercise. You need to stay hydrated all the time. Dehydration will risk a crisis. In fact you need at least 8 -10 glasses a day

-Exercise regularly. But not too much. Some press-ups, some push-ups, or just mild jogging. It keeps the blood flowing and your circulation active. Don't forget to drink plenty water - you will need to step up to 12 glasses now.

-Treat infections as soon as they occur. You notice a common cold, go to your doctor for antibiotic coverage, you don't wanna risk a respiratory tract infection. You have an injury, please antibiotic coverage. The professionals know how to take care of this one. Which is why going to hospital to be known by the specialists is fundamental.

-Don't risk cold weathers and environments. Always carry your sweater around. Stay warm. Don't stay in cold environments- no a.c, no plenty fan. By all means, stay warm. Exposing yourself to cold can trigger a crisis

- Remain focused, positive and live life to the fullest. Cos believe me, that's all you got.

Severe pain that occurs episodically in sickle cell patients is called crisis.

Well, i won't call myself a warrior... I would say i am a 'conqueror'. Let me start my story by saying that I am one of the two out of 7 kids with the SS in my family. At my younger years, it was tough and not until i went thru some trado-medical procedures, everytn started to turn around.. Jaundice reduced, my spleen (which made my stomach big) shrinked and I xperienced less crisis. Tho i did not complete the procedure b4 i relocated to the US, there were improvements. Today, I am happy to say I am a mom with one of the most healthiest and handsome son, have a masters degree and fend for my family all by my self. It depends on how it's being managed. Tho I don't take any prescribed meds cos of their sever side effects, i manage my crisis (which still kicks in once in a while) by using OTCs. One of d best is Aleve Athritis... It works like charm. At d hospital, if i need to get admitted, i get the dilaudid+reglan+benadryl and mayb one pint of blood and I am back on my feet after one week. Seeing me tho, i never look like one.

RColours: You also need a friend, more than anything. A real friend

Very Correct!!!
A good friend who is open-minded enough for you to tell him/her your condition! We as human beings have the tendency to forget ourselves sometimes, hence ur friend would be your Brakes if your are over-doing it. He/She should also know what to do if a Crisis Arises(cuz u'll be too bleeped up to help yourself, and random people can kill you in the name of 1st Aid)!

You can get Tramadol over the Counter in Nigeria! So keep a good Stock!

Finally! Get a Small Piece of Paper and Type out a Help Guideline for yourself on it!
Eg: SS Px, if crisis arises, pls follow d steps below!
(1. Rehydrate 2. Give Opiod Analgesics, 3. Infection Control. Etc)
Make it small and Portable, Carry it always like a I.D card. Nobody knows the Competence of the Health Staff manning the A&E at ur 1st point of call in event of a Crisis!
All other things have been mentioned above!

Maintain a good mental Attitude and go get us that Degree!
Adios!

Yes but he was explaining to a lay person who it appears doesn't understand how the word "crises" came into the story. Are you a medical student?

I know.
When a sickle cell patient says he/she has a crisis, we all know its pain crisis.

Then there's the issue of public enlightenment in layman's language. Its the easiest to understand so I better leave it like that. Make sure you carry enough Dextrose with you when you be mentioning Vaso-occlusive and sequestration on nairaland.

Bros you MUST BELIEVE IN YOURSELF... I 've introduced myself in previous similar threads, I won't 've the time to do it again now. Get closer to your GOD, you must be prayerful n tell GOD and yourself that your academic pursuit must be a great success. My brother it is not easy, but believe. I'm currently in my final yr n to the glory of GOD who has been my strength, I haven't had any serious crisis in school, the mild ones I 've, I manage myself with SLEEP n REST... I wish I could go on, but I 've classes. Let's be friends on whatsapp, quote me with your mobile number.... Goodluck bro
