“Come on Caleb.” Silas said. “It’s time to hit the showers.”

Caleb “oohed” and glanced at his clothes which were covered in zombie spittle and slime. He stood up and followed Silas to the bathroom.

“Leave your contaminated clothes in the bucket labeled “red”. I’ll dispose of them. There are fresh clothes in the wardrobe as you are well aware.” Dr Burke said.

Silas and Caleb did as they were told and Dr Burke wrapped the clothes in a red cellophane bag and went to the first room. Looking carefully through the cameras and making sure the coast was clear, he opened the door and threw the clothes outside. He went back in and then closed the door.

Silas and Caleb were soon out and in new fresh smelling clothes. Dr Burke nodded appreciatively and for a moment there was an awkward silence between them.

“You are going to have to drop the gun sooner or later, Doctor.” Silas said, looking pointedly at the shotgun Dr. Burks still held in his hand.

Dr Burke looked down, “Well, I forgot I was still holding it. Sorry.” And then he put it down. Immediately Caleb rushed him and punched him hard on the face. Dr.Burke promptly fell over and passed out. Caleb turned to look at Silas.

“I agree he had it coming.” Silas said. “However, he is the only one who knows completely how this room works, not to talk of his information on this crazy zombie virus. We have to find a way to work with him.”

Caleb gritted his teeth but said nothing. He calmly picked up the now unconscious doctor and laid him on the sofa in the second room.

“So you think he still knows something about this our small zombie fortress than he is letting on?” Caleb asked.

“Yup.” Silas said looking at Dr Burke thoughtfully. “And the truth is, even though he is a jerk, if I hadn’t broken the rules we wouldn’t have been in that ugly situation.”

“If you hadn’t broken the rules I and my crew would be part of the walking dead by now.” Caleb replied. “Thanks man.”

Silas grunted and leaned back on his chair. He felt sore after the battle they had just had and wanted so much to rest and lie down. He reached behind the sofa under the table and found the lever he thought was for reclining the chair. He pulled it and they both heard an ominous whooshing sound.

“What was that?” Caleb gasped and both men jumped to their feet. They rushed to the first room and froze in shock.

The door was wide open.

Close it back! Close it back!

The thought ran through Silas’ head like a siren. He ran back to the chair and felt frantically for the lever and finally finding it, he pushed with all its strength but it wouldn’t budge.

“Why is it still open?!” Caleb shouted, keeping guard at the door.

“It’s stuck!” Silas replied in alarm, sweating profusely. He pushed as hard as he could but the lever refused to give. He tried pulling but that didn’t work ether.

“I can hear a noise, Silas something is coming round the corner!” Caleb shouted.

“Stop shouting then! You are attracting them gaddemit!” Silas shouted. He stepped back again and examined the lever carefully. There didn’t seem to be any trick to it, it looked like a simple lever. So why wasn’t it going back?

Caleb appeared in the second room. “where’s the shotgun?” he hissed. Silas picked it from where the doctor had dropped it and handed it to
Caleb who rushed back outside.

“Wake the doctor! Ask him how to fix it!” he shouted as he left.

Silas turned to look at the doctor’s sleeping form. Damnit, why did fate seem to always be on his side? He went over to the fridge and brought out a bottle of cold water and returned. He observed the doctor for a second, and then splashed the contents of the bottle on the doctor’s face.

He jumped to his feet, gasping and coughing.

“What happened?”

“The lever behind the sofa got stuck.”Silas said, ignoring the earlier details. “Can you fix it?”

The doctor readjusted his glasses and went to the lever. He grabbed it, pulling it upwards and backwards, then forwards and downwards. It slid back into place and they both heard the door slide shut.

“Whew,” said Silas. “That was close.”

“What the hell happened? Where is Caleb? Wait…did Caleb punch me?”

Silas suddenly became uneasy. Caleb hadn’t replied all this while. He put his finger to his lips and motioned for the doctor to be silent. Dr Burke’s
eyes grew wide and he looked around for his shotgun but it wasn't there. Silas tiptoed to the entrance and peeked into the room.
What he saw made his jaw drop open in amazement.

Standing in front of him was Caleb, his hands high in the air, the shotgun on the ground. Holding a gun to him was a zombie.

“Who the Bleep are you guys?” the Zombie asked.

Silas was so shocked. If his mouth could drop any further it would have hit his kneecaps.

“You can TALK?”

“Of course I can talk, what about you, can you think? I doubt it.” The Zombie said.

Dr Burke came out brandishing a handgun. “Drop it…Holy shit!”

“Finally, someone I can communicate with.” The Zombie said and smiled. “Hello Burke.”

“Stephan? Is that you?” Burke said, lowering his gun.

“In the flesh.”Dr Stephan nodded. “Although my flesh seems to be falling apart these days. I see you have acquired some deadweight. Should I dispose of them?” and he aimed the shotgun.

“No! No, don’t do that. They are…colleagues.” Dr Burke said.

“Definitely not smart colleagues,” Dr Stephan said, “This one let me sneak up on him and disarm him. What’s your name, son?”

Caleb looked embarrassed, “Caleb. I’m Nigerian.”

“And I’m from Puerto Rico but that doesn’t make me immune to being zombified does it?” Stephan smirked.

“Does anyone here find it remotely insane that a Zombie is having a conversation with us?! Anyone?” Silas finally screamed. He had been trying to make sense of it all; here was a shuffling, half decaying bloody zombie in their front speaking and no one had mentioned it yet.

“I am not a zombie! Just some of my experiments gone a bit wrong.” Stephan said.

“This is Dr. Stephan, part of our research team. We were working on an antidote for the zombie vaccine when the apocalypse hit.” Dr Burke said.

Dr Stephan lowered the gun and extended his hand to Caleb. “Pleased to meet you. And I’m not really from Pueto Rico.”

“I’m not touching you.” Caleb said. “It’s against the rules.”

Dr Stephan paused for a moment then threw his head back and laughed. The laugh shook his whole body and for a moment Silas thought his arms were going to fall off.

“You gave them the rulebook did you?” Dr. Stephan said. “Good for you, Burke. You were always one to follow the rules.” He turned to Silas. “And who is this?”

“Erm, Silas.” Silas replied.

“Where have you been, Stephan?”Dr. Burke asked

“Over in the Zombie room, working on an antidote. I daresay I’m almost there, though I have been having a shortage of test subjects and catching stray zombies was getting to be too risky…”

“So you started experimenting on yourself?” Dr Burke gasped.

“So I started experimenting on myself.” Dr Stephan nodded.

“You can’t stay Stephan. You’ll contaminate us all.” Dr Burke said.

Dr. Stephan snorted. “I’m this close to getting a vaccine that will save all of humanity and you want to throw me out? No sir, I’m staying right here. And besides, the zombie room has been overrun by zombies. I barely escaped with my life.”

“Wait, you keep calling that place the zombie room, where are we then?” Silas asked perplexed.

Dr Burke sighed and turned to him. “I told you this was the Alien invasion room. You thought I was joking, didn’t you?” He turned back to Dr Stephan. “You’ll have to stay here in the outer room then. The rest of us will be inside. But be warned, any funny moves by you and I’ll shoot you in the head myself.”

Dr Stephan grinned. It was a horrible grin with one side of his face drooping as if paralyzed and bloody spittle dripping out of his diseased-looking mouth. “Thanks Burke,” he said. “You always did know how to give reassuring speeches. Now, do you have any raw meat in the freezer? I’m hungry.”

Dr Stephan stayed with them for a week. During that time they got to know each other better. Dr Stephan was an easy going fellow, not at all like Dr Burke who was always uptight and wanted everything done by the book. Dr Stephan was a huge man, almost as big as Efe, with blonde hair and blue eyes. He maintained a cheerful countenance most of the time but on one or two occasions, Silas had caught him in a depressed mood as his condition slowly deteriorated. Dr Stephan had lost his wife and five kids to the virus; they were wandering about outside somewhere probably munching on other humans. It was a depressing thought. In desperation to find a cure and get his family back, Dr Stephan had injected himself with what he hoped was the antidote to the zombie epidemic. It had been a partial success in that he had retained his senses and when bitten by other zombies he hadn’t changed, but sadly it wasn’t a complete success. The zombie virus was slowly taking over, decaying his flesh and making him more ravenous by the day. He controlled the rate of change by injecting himself every two days the intervals between which he had been working vigorously for the cure until some of his ‘test subjects’ had somehow escaped from the room he had kept them. Before he knew it his place had been overrun by the zombies and he had to run for his life.

He had brought some of his equipment in a small rubber bag and had set them up as soon as Dr Burke had allowed him settle in the first room.

Dr burke on the other hand was having issues with authority. Dr Stephan outranked him and had been ordering him about since he came in. It wasn’t really his fault though as Dr burke had raised a glass cubicle around him from doors Silas and Caleb had been made to get from the corridor outside. Although Dr burke was glad to have a scientist of like mind with him engaging him in meaningful discussions, he didn’t like being bossed around. He saw the occasional smirk from Silas and Caleb as they giggled behind his back when Dr Stephan sent him on an errand and he didn’t like it. Stephan had always been a bossy sort but he had a good head albeit sometimes crazy, on his shoulders. Even now the antidote he was working on was a brilliant piece of work and Dr burke felt it held much promise.

“I’m almost there, Burke.” Silas would say, grinning that ghoulish zombie grin at him from behind the glass paneling. “I’ve almost got it!”

“Good, because the sooner you get it the sooner you can come out of this glass cage.” Dr Burke said to him the last time they had discussed.

Caleb spent that week keeping his mind off his dead friends by working out. He would wake up earlier than the others and begin his bench presses. He would run around the small cubicle hundreds of times, engage in sit-ups and pushups and any other exercise activity he could think of. He kept himself fit and strong and even Silas was inspired once in a while to join.
Silas didn’t quite trust Dr. Stephan. He watched him warily from beside the door and made sure he never went anywhere unescorted especially the bathroom. As far as Silas was concerned, Stephan was a disaster waiting to happen and he kept on sleeping with one eye open in case Dr Stephan suddenly went crazy.

One day, they were all awakened early in the morning by a loud shout from Dr Stephan. Arming himself, Silas was the first to reach the control room and saw Dr Stephan jumping up and down and laughing with joy.

“I did it! I did it! I did it!” he kept on repeating as he pranced about in his glass cubicle. He waved his clenched fist in the air as the others surrounded him. “I’ve gotten the antidote!”

“That’s great!” Caleb smiled.

“But how do you know it works?” Dr Burke asked.

Dr Stephan smiled and, taking a sample of the substance with a dropper, he put two drops in his mouth.

“I have made it both oral and injectable.” He said. “Wait for it…I thought I’d wait for you guys to be around before I did this!”

They all watched expectantly. Suddenly a little colour came into Dr Stephan’s dead-like face. Blood gushed out of a cut below his left eye that had previously looked dried up and dead. Dr Stephan buckled over in obvious pain and started to convulse violently. Dr Burke quickly wore gloves and rushed into the glass cage, trying to keep him still. Caleb also rushed in to help. In a moment it was all over. Stephan lay on the floor as if in deep sleep, his colour back, his body and skin restored although covered in a lot of sweat.

“This is amazing.” Caleb said quietly.

Dr burke nodded. “He has always been a bit of a genius.”

Dr Stephan stirred and sat up groggily. He was bleeding from a lot of small cuts here and there, but he was grinning all the same.

“I feel like shit but it was worth it! I feel human again!” He exclaimed.

“Now, now, calm down.” Dr burke said. “You are bleeding all over the place.”

“That’s a good thing! It means my heart is pumping again! I am officially undead, and not just undead undead but really undead!”

“Okay, you are becoming incoherent.”

Dr Stephan got to his feet.

“We need to test it.”

“How?” Dr burke asked, his eyes widening.

Dr Stephan smiled. “Its zombie catching time.”

“No, No, No! Not a good idea!” Dr Burke said even as Silas and Caleb armed themselves at the request of Dr Stephan. He had taken a long shower and changed to a new pair of clothes, thanks to Dr burke’s immaculate wardrobe.

“We have to try it out Burke.” Dr Stephan said clapping his hands gleefully. “It’s no big deal. I did it myself a couple of times in the other room.”

“And look what happened to you!” Dr Burke replied apprehensively. “Who in their right mind goes out to catch Zombies?”

Silas stood up and looked at Dr Stephan.

“Dr Burke has been proven right a number of times since I met him. Why don’t we simply vaccinate ourselves first, become immune to zombie bites?”

“Because the antidote is for those that have already turned into zombies!” Dr Stephan said, clapping Silas on the back. “If you get bitten during
our little adventure, I will not hesitate to inject you. But not a minute before then!”

“Na wah o…” Caleb mumbled. “we wan do this thing true true? Catch zombie?”

“What did you say?” Dr Stephan asked. “I didn’t get you.”

“Never mind. It’s pidgin.” Caleb replied. He cocked his shotgun. “Let’s roll.”

“Bad idea, Bad idea,” Dr burke said as he went to the console and opened the door. It slid open with a whoosh and Silas and Caleb ventured out
cautiously. The corridor looked empty but they couldn’t be quite sure as some pockets of darkness remained at the edges. Anything could be
waiting patiently there and they wouldn’t know until it was too late.

“Stay behind me Caleb,” Silas said as he took tentative steps forward. He felt he was more experienced with guns and so decided to take the lead. Caleb followed dutifully behind, keeping an eye out for any form of movement. As they went further out, Dr Burke closed the door shut behind them.

“Seriously old chap, you would have left the door open in case they need to beat a hasty retreat.” Dr Stephan said, shaking his head at Dr Burke.

“Don’t worry; I’ll be watching them from the monitor here. “ Dr Burke said, punching the keypad beside the door. “If there is any need to open it I will do so.”

Dr. Stephan shrugged. Now he was feeling better he didn’t want to impose his authority too much on Dr Burke though he felt the man was being a little strict.

Silas and Caleb continued their search, trying to be as quiet as possible as they made their way down the corridor. On one or two occasions they thought they heard noise but it turned out to be rats. Caleb was beginning to get a little nervous.

“Bro, we have gone far from the room and still no zombies. What if they are setting a trap for us? “

“Zombies do not set traps, Caleb.” Silas said, moving forward. He understood Caleb’s anxiety though. The corridor was about to end and soon
they would reach the main doors to the building.

“Maybe they have all wandered off in search of food or something.” Caleb said, as he approached the main door with Silas in front of him.
“Maybe none of them are around…”

They both paused at the main door and looked at each other.

“Let’s do this.” Silas said and Caleb nodded. Silas turned the lock and opened the door.

And right in front of them was a whole horde of zombies. They were standing outside, swaying slowly from side to side as if to music. They

stopped immediately and all eyes turned to the two men who had interrupted whatever they were doing.

“Shit.” Caleb said.

With a loud roar, the entire horde of zombies rushed after them. Caleb and Silas turned and fled down the corridor with the zombies snapping at their heels. Caleb turned around and saw them falling over each other to get at them, some whole and complete, others falling apart with dangling heads and limbs. One particular black zombie kept reaching out for him, and suddenly Caleb had a moment of recognition.

“Efe! Look Silas, It’s Efe!”

“Yeah, maybe you should stop and say hi!” Silas retorted as he panted down the long dark corridor. He stumbled and almost fell but Caleb caught and steadied him.

“There’s too many of them!” shouted Caleb. “How many zombies were we supposed to catch?!”

Silas was thinking furiously. There seemed to be only one way out of this and it wasn’t pleasant.

“Caleb! Get to the door! Make sure it is open!”

“Ok!” Caleb said and ran ahead. Silas turned on his heels and fired a shot into the belly of the nearest zombie. It fell, and many others tumbled
over it in the melee. Silas stood his ground and fired another shot at a shuffling zombie, turning it to pulp instantly. As it dropped, more zombies fell over it, but there were too many and soon Silas found himself swinging the gun left right and centre in a bid to keep them off him. Zombie Efe made a lunge at him but Silas ducked at the last moment, using his body as a lever and threw the Zombie Efe over his head. It hit the floor hard and moaned loudly. Silas got up in time to see the slide door open and Caleb rushing back.

“Take him in!” Silas shouted just before he was pulled down by the other Zombies. He screamed as they bit into his arm and chest. Pain turned him to an animal and he struck at them viciously, managing to disentangle himself from their grasp. By now Caleb was pulling Zombie Efe inside the Panic room by his legs with the help of Dr Stephan. Silas roared and struck out at the zombies around him and it was not until he bit one of the zombies on the shoulder that he realized he was becoming one of them. He looked at the light, the two humans pulling zombie Efe into the room. His quickly fogging brain reminded him that there was something vastly important about that light, in that room, but he couldn’t remember what it was. He realized the zombies weren’t attacking him so much anymore and he was now in fact like part of the horde, screaming and shuffling towards the light and the door but quickly losing interest at the same time. He suddenly stopped like the other zombies and started to turn around and go back outside to the strange sound that his ears were picking up…but suddenly firm hands grabbed him and pulled him inside the room and the door slid shut.

“Oh my goodness! He’s turned into one of them!” He heard a voice say and he lurched in the direction of the voice, looking for the sweet morsel of flesh it was coming from. His appetite was so great he felt it was the only important thing in the world. He turned around and saw a man in a white suit rush up to him and stick something in his arm. He grabbed the man but someone else pulled the man away from his grasp. His tongue felt bitter and heavy all of a sudden and then the fogginess began to clear. He gasped for breath as he regained full consciousness of himself once again.

“Holy crap, Silas! That was awesome!” Caleb said as the colour slowly returned to Silas’ cheeks.

“Did I turn into a zombie?” Silas asked, bewildered.

“Yes you did mate.” Dr Stephan said. “I injected you with the antidote just like I said, after you got bitten. And it worked!”

Silas groaned and sat on the floor. It was only then he noticed the huge sleeping form of Efe beside him.

“What about him?” He asked.

Will it be permanent
Will it have more unseen effects

Dr Burke and Dr Stephan isolated the zombie Efe in the first room while Silas and Caleb watched from went to get cleaned up. As soon as they were through, they came out to see that Dr Stephan had injected Zombie Efe with the antiserum.

It had been 30minutes.

“Why isn’t it working?” Dr Burke asked agitatedly.

“Patience, Burke.” Dr Stephan replied. “This guy has been a zombie for a long time…”

“A few hours, doctor.” Silas interjected.

“Ah, Yes.” Dr Stephan replied with a grim smile. “Dr Burke told me he was a previous colleague of yours. It will take a while before it takes effect, I haven’t worked out all the kinks in the vaccine yet but I’m sure I’ll be able to hasten the process after some more research…”

Zombie Efe suddenly began to groan. They all stood at alert. They watched as the colour returned to his cheeks and he started bleeding from scratches and wounds on his body. Soon he started to turn from side to side and then suddenly fell off the table and began to vomit. Caleb wanted to go to him but Silas held him back

“Wait a minute.” Silas cautioned. “Let’s make sure he is fully back first.”

After vomiting some more, Zombie Efe stood slowly to his feet. He looked slowly from one person to the other and his eyes finally rested on Dr Burke. He opened his mouth slowly and said

“Okay, I bang that girl abeg no vex…wait…wetin dey happen? Where am I?”

“Reactionary Memory Loss.” Dr Stephan said, nodding his head like he had just had a revelation. “the subject retains the last thoughts from when
he was human. I guess it’s for the best.”

Efe turned to Caleb. “Bros, wetin dey happen? Who vomit all this vomit? Who get all this blood for my shirt?”

“Go and shower first, ldiot!” Caleb shouted, although there was a wide grin on his face. “I go gist you later!”

Dr Burke watched as Efe lumbered towards the bathroom, Caleb behind him and making sure he didn’t stain the walls with his soiled clothing.

“It’s amazing. You’ve actually found a cure! Good man!” And for the first time he grinned and clasped Dr Stephan’s hand in admiration. Silas watched this show of affection, bemused. The doctor must have been really hard hit by the zombie apocalypse. He realized he had never bothered to ask the stern doctor what he lost.

“So how do we go about this? Do we catch another zombie?” Dr Burke asked excitedly.

They were seated at the dinner table having lunch. Efe had been put up to speed on what had happened to him. He received the news of his girlfriend and the homosexual couple with great sadness. It was unfortunate that Jenny had a broken neck; according to Dr Stephan, any life threatening injury would kill the zombie if he gave them the antidote and they reverted back to their human selves.

“I’m thinking of how I can convert it into an aerosol, that way we should be able to administer it without too much risk.” Dr Stephan replied while chewing on some cabbages.

“I might be able to help you there,” Dr Burke said. “I have a depressurizer in compartment 32…” and the doctors began mumbling between themselves.

Silas had a faraway look in his eye and Caleb asked him what was wrong.

“I killed her. My wife, I killed her…”

“You better stop that kind of thinking right now!” Caleb retorted. “Do you know what we did before we got here? Man, we had no choice in the matter! We were trying to survive, Efe here used a shotgun and a chainsaw on some zombie folks, how do you think he feels?”

Silas was silent.

“It’s not your fault if you killed anyone.” Dr Burke cut in. “We all did what we had to do to survive. Even now we still aren’t sure if we’ll be able to get everybody with the vaccine…”

“I have limited resources here. I have to get the vaccine to a bigger lab where I can produce it in large amounts. What I have here is not enough to convert twenty zombies and there is a multitude of them out there.

“The only way we can make up for what we have done is to try and convert as many people back to human beings as possible.” Efe said quietly.
He was still feeling down. “we gat to help as much as we can, Caleb. For Jenny.”

They were all quiet. Silas looked around at all of them and suddenly realized what needed to be done.

“Dr Burke, do you guys know of any lab where Dr Stephan can manufacture more of the vaccine?”

“There’s the Eisenhower lab down town. About three hours drive from here.”

“Yeah, I’ve always wanted to tinker around that place, they have the latesdt equipment.” Dr stephan replied.

“Right. Dr Burke, you are going to help Dr Stephan turn this vaccine into an aerosol as soon as you can. It will be easy spraying the stuff in them zombie faces instead of pricking each one with a needle.”

“Ok, sounds good.” Dr Burke replied.

“Caleb and Efe, we are both going to be spending a lot of time getting fit. We are going to make it our mission to take these scientists to the lab as soon as they are ready to move. We have one shotgun between us but we’ll do our best.

“One shotgun?” Dr Stephan looked up,surprised, then turned to Dr Burke with a frown. Dr Burke sighed.

“You know the protocol. I had to make sure I trusted them first.” Dr Burke said resignedly.

“Trusted us how?” Caleb asked. “What are you guys talking about?”

Dr Burke sighed again and got up, motioning for the others to follow him. Dr Stephan stayed behind to finish his meal. Dr Burke went to the bathroom and entered the toilet.

“We didn’t need this before, but if we are going to go on an expedition out of this room, we might as well be fully prepared.”

He turned the flush lever upwards instead of down and the toilet slid forward a bit. Dr Burke pulled and the toilet and the wall it was attached to moved aside like a door to reveal another room.

An arsenal room.

A room filled to the brim with guns, crossbows, grenades and other forms of artillery.

Efe whistled.

“You have everything except an armoured tank.” Caleb gasped.

“Yeah, that one’s outside under the parking lot.” Dr Burke replied.
