Students protest non-native's appointment as Amosun's adviser

by Samuel Awoyinfa

Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun

Some students of Ogun State origin in different higher institutions across the country over the weekend protested what they called the appointment of a non-native of the state as the Special Adviser to the Governor on Students' Affairs.

They gave the name of nominated candidate as Godwin Clement, while addressing journalists at the Iwe Iroyin House, Oke Ilewo, AbeokutA.

The students under the aegis of the National Association of Ogun State Students expressed their displeasure with the appointment of Clement who they alleged hailed from Benue State.

They said they would not watch and allow a non-native to sit over their right.

The students argued that such a person would lack the empathy towards their welfare.

The National Chairman of the association, Mr. Omobolaji Sanni, suggested three names of indigenes of the state who he said were competent to occupy the office.

They are Mr. Obasa Ola Clement, (Abeokuta, Ogun Central Senatorial District), Mr. Nuberu Adesanya Olufemi, (Ago-Iwoye, Ogun East Senatorial District), and Mr. Bankole Olalekan Kunle fromIlaro, Ogun West Senatorial District.

He said, "We have done our investigations and we discovered that Mr. Godwin Clement is not from Ogun State but from Benue State. And we are appealing to the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun to change him."

The students also appealed to the governor to review downward tuition which they described as outrageous at the moment.

Two weeks ago, the governor had promised to pay bursary and scholarship awards to the students in August.

The NAOSS chairman said the comprehensive list of students who hail from the state in all higher institutions would be submitted to the governor on Friday.

The students said they wanted the governor to reverse the appointment within seven days, failure of which they would take to the streets in protest.

Effort made to speak with the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, proved abortive, as he neither picked calls made to his telephone nor responded to the text message sent to him on the matter.

I wonder what these touts are really studying in school these days. Just a small worthless cash and they are already dancing naked in street like an insane fellow that they are. These people are not students, the real students from Ogun state are busy with their studies in class.

If education is failing to eradicate the permittivity from the minds of certain classes of Nigerians why are States and the Government wasting money encouraging education ?

Laboring on farms, garbage collecting are just a few worthy trades deserving of the cash and publicity Education receives not just from Nigeria but from international organizations such as the UN and WHO

Very Unfortunate.

And these are supposed to be part of today's youth expected to bring the desired change to this already dysfunctional nation.

Special adviser! Not even ward head or Councillor or LG Chairman.

Please STFU. Tell me where a Non indigene is representing Students in any Northern or Eastern state? A commissioner or special adviser I may agree, but a student affairs representative must be familiar with those he is representing.

Issa yuguda's special adviser on media is a yoruba man, wake up from ur dreams, because u can't see beyond your nose.besides the students are nt protesting against the position but against the individual.wt is more important, the man's state of origin or wt he brings to the table?.blacks are the first to cry of marginalisation in nations all over the world, but come home ,we don't like our selves.
