Cars are very essential means of transportation in Nigeria. Cars like Porshe, Ferrari, Lamborghini are a luxury to a good number of people but there are other brands that make basic necessity like cars easy to meet. From the cost to fuel conservation and availability, these cars can be referred to common man’s brand. They include:



Toyota
The bestselling car brand in Nigeria is the Toyota brand according to statics. Founded in 1937 by Japanese, Kiichiro Toyota, the Toyota brand has grown to become the world’s largest automobile manufacturers. Owning subsidiaries like the luxury version of Toyota, Lexus and the hip brand, Scion, Toyota is the most famous and most loved brand in the country with models like the Camry, Corolla, Land Cruiser and so much more. Nigerians love this car because it is relatively affordable, durable, easy to maintain and can be sold off for a pretty nice price after being used. If you happen to own a Toyota then you are fortunate because if you need to replace it, finding a buyer wouldn’t be a problem at least if you have to compare with how long it will take to dispose of other car makes. That explains why it is the bestselling car in Nigeria.

Honda
Honda comes in second place on the list but nonetheless, it is equally loved by Nigerians. Also founded in Japan, founders Soichiro Honda and Takeo Fujisawa did a good job creating a very cost effective brand. With a variety of models like the Accord, Civic, Pilot and many more, Honda has secured a lasting presence in the Nigerian auto market. With a luxury subsidiary called Acura, Honda will continue to increase revenue with every new or updated model of their cars. Nigerian young and upwardly mobile men love this car for its strength and speed but also because it is also easy to maintain. It is slightly more expensive than the Toyota but you can be sure of better road performance with this car. The most popular makes as they are nicknamed include; end of discussion, discussion continues, baby boy, bullet and muscle.

Volkswagen
The Volkswagen has been around in Nigeria for a very long time but it is fast losing its place due to the new entrants in the market. Since the time of the beetle, Volkswagen (VW) is a brand that has been saluted in many ways especially with its durability. The Volkswagen name meaning the “People’s car” is a brand really switched from just giving Nigerians the beetle model to giving the bug (which is the upgraded version of the beetle), Passat, Bora and many more. The Volkswagen group also has a lot of known brands under its belt which include the luxurious Porsche, Lamborghini, Skoda, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Ducati, Scania (truck manufacturer) and more.

KIA
Korean made cars are slowly displacing more traditional BMW, Volvo and Mitsubishi range of cars. The Picanto, Rio and others in the brand have suddenly become the darlings of many car owners perhaps for the affordability or may be their appeal to the female folk and price conscious businesses. The KIA comes in at number 4 amongst the best selling car brand in Nigeria. Founded in the heart of South Korea, KIA is one of the fastest rising brands in the car industry. In Nigeria it is one of the cars used the most for official vehicles because of its affordability and fuel conservation. With the introduction of their tiny design named the “Picanto”, the Kia sales have rapidly increased in Nigeria. Kia is under the Hyundai Motor Group.

Peugeot
The Peugeot range of cars seem to be the preferred choice among government workers who either purchase these cars through car loans or have government purchase them as official cars. They are usually assembled locally by Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) and hence you can be sure that it may be connected to being proudly Nigerian.
