NMA Strike: Kogi Private Hospitals Reject Patients
Residents of Lokoja, Kogi State are now in dilemma over the fate of patients in the state capital and its environs, as private hospitals, which are supposed to come to the aid of the sick have started rejecting them, due to over-stretched facilities and lack of trained personnel to handle emergency cases. Our correspondent who moved round private hospitals in Lokoja metropolis yesterday discovered that the private clinics, which were mostly owned by the striking doctors, are now complaining of rowdiness as a result of inflow of patients without adequate medical personnel and facilities. The situation has resulted to painful death of some patients, while others relocate to the villages for traditional treatment.Meanwhile, Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Idris Omede has appealed to the state and federal government, as well as the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) to dialogue andfind a permanent solution to the health sector, for the sake of the nation.Omede, a former National President of NMA, stated this while interacting with newsmen in Lokoja on the effect of doctors’ strike to the nation, noting that issues that led to the strike is not an ego problem but issues that have to do with infrastructure and manpower development. Pointing out that government is for the union and also for the people, he called on the government and the NMA leadership to come together, dialogue and find a lasting solution to the strike, saying no doctor is happy to see hospital being closed as a result of strike. He also called on the relevant stake holders in the health sector to intervene for the benefit of the people.
