As a graduate / professional navigating the murky waters of the employment market, you don’t have to wait to receive an employment offer before you start or develop you career. We have outlined a number of ways in which unemployed graduates and professionals can keep their careers on the move, in a ‘jobless’ economy.

1. Bear in mind that your ‘Career’ does not have to start with a ‘Job’.
There are several aspects to career growth, including study, entrepreneurship, paid or unpaid employment and self-improvement.

2. Find an ‘alternate’ income source, while you await your job opportunity.
Having an income is the primary reason why people take on paid jobs. However, paid jobs are certainly not the only source of income, though they may be considered the most reliable.

Put on your business hat. Not everyone is an entrepreneur or a business mogul, but most people can turn an investment into profit. I know of a young man who started a small laundry business in his home while waiting for employment. After doing this for about a year, he began to get offers from investors who believed he could and should scale his business. I know of others who have successfully explored and established themselves in other ‘small-scale’ ventures, including: buying / selling of viable commodities, small-scale production and sale of goods, consulting services (for people who already have some experience, and even blogging.

Team up with a few of your old school mates and brainstorm small business ideas that you can work on collectively. Even after you get a job, you can continue to run your business on the side, as a secondary income source.

3. Channel your efforts towards continuous learning
One of the best ways to keep your career moving is to continuously develop your knowledge-base and skills through learning, bearing in mind the fact that the more knowledgeable and skilled you are, the more employable you become.

Learning does not have to be all classroom-based, and certainly does not have to cost you much money. Learning opportunities include attendance of industry-specific workshops, online webinars, short courses (either online or offline) and longer, formal courses. You could also take on self-taught courses using books.

4. Stay on top of your industry by attending industry-related seminars and workshops.
You don’t have to attend industry-related events every day or every week, but you should certainly keep an eye on upcoming events, and attend them as frequently as you can. It will give you an opportunity to keep abreast of industry changes, and also establish relationships with other professionals in your industry.
