THE IMPORTANCE AND BENEFITS OF PRIVATE TUITION

With the ever increasing workload on school pupils of almost all levels, in most cases where pupils offer as many as 15 subjects with an average of 8-10 periods per day, each period spanning from 40-60 minutes in most schools, there is no gainsaying that it would be a near impossible task for these learners to assimilate the lessons or grasp all key concepts without extra efforts. Of no fault of theirs, most women are becoming career oriented & professional, they can't pay adequate attention to their children regarding their studies or most parents don't find time to assist their children in their studies. Many parents are not themselves well educated or might not be knowledgeable in the academic field or subject where their children need assistance; hence they can't assist their children in their studies. Some pupils, out of the fear of being turned down or made center of attraction due to the nature of their questions, inferiority complex or stage fright, would rather keep their thoughts and queries to themselves thereby leaving their quests unattended to.

The aftermath effects of accumulation of academic work are dwindled interest, confusion, loss of self-confidence, poor performance and bad results in tests and examinations. The situation in Nigeria as a case study is quite worrisome. Most schools don’t reveal the true picture of pupils’ performance to their parents. In some cases, pupils are promoted to higher classes even if he or she does not merit it as long as tuition is paid. This is an integral cause of the mass failure recorded every year in SSCE, UTME and other examinations. In solving these problems, extra assistance in studies besides attending school or college is a necessity. A good, professional and dedicated private tutor can work wonders in such a case. The tutor:

1. Begins by identifying strengths, weaknesses, learning style and personality of the pupil to best select the most effective teaching ideas and methodologies.
2. Helps him or her psychologically to establish and develop interest in studies
3. Helps clear his/her doubts on unclear or confusing concepts
4. Strengthens his/her fundamentals
5. Conducts practice tests or mock examinations to assess his/her strengths and weaknesses
6. Teaches examination techniques, imbibes swift reasoning and problem solving skills
7. Constantly motivates and encourages him/her
8. Boosts his/her confidence and eradicate fear of exams
9. Monitors his/her progress

All these can be achieved because the learner will have the advantage of a whole teacher to himself/herself, with the lesson plans and strategies of teaching designed just for him/her! On the contrary, in a classroom, one teacher may be faced with over twenty or even thirty pupils, with different personalities, different abilities, different rates of learning, individual strengths and weaknesses; despite this, the teacher will be forced to treat his class as if it contained just one pupil, of course it would be cumbersome for the teacher to attend to individual needs due to time constraint amongst other hindrances. He or she will orate from one end of the classroom, unable to ascertain how effectively each pupil is assimilating the lesson. Based on the teacher’s expectation, the lesson plans will be designed to fit the needs of the average pupil; and the teacher will proceed at a rate suitable for the average pupil.

Compared to the conflicts of the classroom coupled with the difficulty of distractions from other pupils, the relaxed one-on-one environment of a tutor and a pupil can be a safe haven of unleashing potentials. In such environment, the pupil will always be at ease to ask questions to clear his or her doubts on bewildering, unclear and confusing concepts. The rapt attention and listening ear given to the learner would boost his self-confidence and the confidence to present his or her ideas before his teacher and colleagues is restored. Even if a pupil is performing well at school or college, it is highly likely that some private tuition will give him or her an edge over his or her peers.

It is noteworthy that it is their friends and contemporaries they are competing against for the relatively few admission slots, scholarship opportunities etc. – many of who may already be receiving tuition. In an age where private tuition has gained prominence and is fast becoming the norm, it may be necessary to join in and avoid being left behind.
