Choosing A Child's Surname by justt: 8:03pm On Jul 26, 2014
I often noticed the arbitrary selection of surname for a child especially in Yoruba land as am not too sure of other tribes. Someone may bear his/her direct biological father's name while another may use grandfather or great grandfather's name.

Well they may all have their reasons. My surname is widely known and could easily grant my children favour in some places but I have decided they are going to bear my own personal name.

Do you think this is being selfish or when will someone bear my name?

If ur child's surname will be ur personal name, what then will be ur wife's surname? What will also be ur own surname? I thot a family is supposed to bear the same surname?

Well our generation is changing everything

its no big deal.

people change their names all the time, why do you need nairaland to validate your decisions?

Of course my surname will be different from my child's surname. My wife bears my surname which is my grand father's name. So both are different

I never asked for validation. Only looking for people's opinions. Yes, there's no big deal about it but one may still get one or two things from other people's contributions.

Isn't that kind of divisive? A family bearin different surnames? I really wanna understand the logic cuz I'm considerin changin mine in the future. For instance, if ur name is henry justt and ur wife is mary justt, then ur kids are precious henry, thierry henry and benita henry- if ur family is to be called a general name which is mostly the surname just like the kardashians or the elliots ( a collective name for a family), what will ur family be called since the parents and kids bear different surnames?? Just curious

I think kids should bear their father's name and not some long dead ancestors name.

For me I'd like my kids to bear hubby's first name but he doesn't agree.

Op you're not selfish joor.

most people dont actually know the originator of their surnames.

thats why its called descent.

its probably mostly whites who can trace their ancestry far back to their first known ancestor.

Let a kid open their own doors, so that they will not end up messing up a good name out of entitlement. A good name can open doors for a person with good intentions. But we know a lot of people these days don't know what that means. You can also hyphenate the name.

My own name will open doors for me and my mother is still grumbling that I should hyphenate so my kids can be identified. My kids will bear their father's name. Though I may hyphenate my own name if I change my mind on that. Let the kids find their own way and answer dem papa name Abeg.

hmmm

but what qualifies a name as "good" or "bad", all things being equal, ie barring criminal activity, debauchery, etc.

Wow, for so long I haven't checked here!
No, my wife will stop bearing my surname (Justt) instead she will bear my name ('Henry'). Then our family will be referred to by my firstname - Henry

you can make their surname in a compound form ( your name and surnname with their names)

if the surname is changed ,how do you trace a child's ancestry, especially for one who grew overseas?

You replied five years later grin

Thank God for life cool

It's nice. At least I have an understanding now of how it should be because there's a chance I'd change surname in the future.

My kids are taking my name. Not my surname.
Re: Choosing A Child's Surname by Donjuan77: 9:32am On Feb 13, 2020
that is what I Av bin planning also, my children are answering my name already but I Av not made it official, soonest I will make it official by God Grace. Because I don't want the sins of my great, grand father to affect me and my children and my unborn children. Afterall am the person who impregnated my wife and not my father or my greatgrand father, why should I allow them to take my Glory.
