Mariah Serrano, 21, from New
York, United States, was born
with a painfully twisted club foot,
and had never worn high heels
in her life. She had always been
confined to trainers as a result of
the condition, growing envious
of her friends who wore heels
over the years. But not anymore.
Serrano has found a way round
her obsession – albeit weird –
she asked a surgeon to chop off
her leg so that she can have
prosthetics in place and wear
heels, according to Mirror UK.
“When I was told I’d never be
able to wear high heels and I
should give up my dream career,
I was devastated,” she said. “I
went to a specialist in 2009 and
told him to amputate my leg.
Mum was horrified but that was
what I wanted,” she said.
The 21-year-old endured five
operations and wore leg braces
all her life with no improvement.
It came to a point where she was
sick of the braces and longed to
wear normal shoes. That was
when she finally made up her
mind to have them chopped off.
“It wasn’t until I read an article
about my favourite designer
Alexander McQueen, who’d made
a pair of prosthetic legs for
athlete Aimee Mullins that I knew
what I had to do. I realised that a
beautifully crafted prosthetic
could look good and so I chose
that.”
The days and weeks after the
surgery weren’t easy – they came
with lots of pains for the young
woman. “Most times I wondered
what on earth I had done. I
couldn’t go out and didn’t want
my friends to come over and see
me. It was really hard,” she said.
Eventually the wound healed well
and her family presented her
with her first pair of heels. She
was thrilled. “As I teetered
around the living room wearing
them, I knew I’d done the right
thing,” she said.
Mariah remembers having
trouble learning to walk in heels.
“It was hard to get used to, but
even girls without foot and leg
problems have to learn to wear
heels for the first time.
“Choosing to have my leg cut off
was the hardest thing I’ve ever
done. I still wake up sometimes
and wonder where it is,” she
said.
