Popular Lagos pastor and Convener of the
Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare
says one of the ways to end the spate of
attacks by terror group, Boko Haram in
Nigeria, is for the Federal Govt of Nigeria
to apologize to the sect members for
killing their leader, Mohammed Yusuf in
2009.
According to Vanguard, he gave the advise
during the state of the nation address at a
church service in Lagos.
“The summary
execution of the Boko
Haram’s former
leader, Mohammed
Yusuf in 2009
provided the soil of
martyrdom for the
nurture and growth of
the sect. Government
must declare peace
first of all;
apologizing for the
murder of
Mohammed Yusuf to
the sect members
not their
sympathizers or
bandits.” he said
On the attack on Buhari last Wednesday in
Kano, Pastor Bakare said
“But for the
timely intervention of God, last week’s
assassination attempt on General Buhari
might have marked the beginning of the
end for Nigeria if it had succeeded. We will
not also ignore the fact that at the root of
the escalation of the Boko Haram crisis
was oppression and injustice”.

Which kin stũpid apology? They should arrest the policemen who murdered him and charge them with capital murder. And that includes the senior officers who were involved, not just the junior scapegoats that they arraigned a few years ago. They should also demote and sack all the senior officers along the chain of command and officially censure the then Inspector-General of Police. Every policeman and soldier involved in the 2009 Maiduguri massacre should be made to answer for his/her crimes.

The fact is that this Boko Haram problem started because of the police's bone-headed policy of extrajudicial killings and violent suppression of peaceful protests. Boko Haram started as a peaceful preaching and teaching group and they only became violent because the police kept killing their members. And the police has killed more innocent people than Boko Haram has even by their own count. People keep abusing Boko Haram, but they never bother to think abut the police's role in the violence.

Even today, they're still doing it. Despite the thousands of people they've arrested, when was the last time you heard of any Boko Haram member being tried or sentenced? Amnesty International keeps on exposing the way they just round people up, keep them in dungeons for a few weeks then take them to one corner and shoot them. Do we really think everybody the police arrests is automatically guilty? Shouldn't each person be allowed to tell his side of the story before he is shot? Should we really be ignoring their constitutionally guaranteed freedom of association and be executing people for allegedly being members of a group instead of punishing them for the things they actually did? Other countries are seeing what our policemen and soldiers are doing, that is why they have all refused to help us despite Jonathan going round begging for assistance. Nobody wants to become an accomplice in a war crime.

There can never be peace without justice. As long as the Nigerian government keeps using terror tactics, Boko Haram will always have reasons to fight. You need to have the moral high ground before you can claim to be fighting evil. And if we're to be honest, it is difficult to argue that the Nigerian authorities are better than the people they are fighting.
