the base of the plant) or from corms (underground bulbs known as rhizomes). The use of whole corms is very laborious so it is more common to grow from small pieces of corm. There are three different types of banana suckers which are produced by the mother plant; maidenheads, sword suckers and water suckers. Maidenheads have a large pseudostem which does not produce fruit. Sword suckers have a narrow base, short pseudostem and narrow, blade-like leaves. They produce healthy, fruitful pseudostems when they mature Water suckers have short pseudostems and broad leaves. Water suckers are not strongly attached to the rhizome and generally produce weaker plants and less fruit. Maidenheads and large sword suckers are preferred over water suckers.

Detached corm techniques Detached corm techniques are currently promoted by Sedulus Plantain Farm because of higher numbers of seedlings produced and uniformity in growth while being less prone to post-establishment stress in the field. Detached corm techniques include: whole corm, split corm, excised buds, meristem-drilling and PIF (plants issus de fragments de tiges). These techniques are simple (easy-to-grasp), cheap to establish with minimum investment to set up germination chambers and weaning facilities.

Growth Test This study was established as a split-split-plot experiment in a randomized complete-block design (Cochran and Cox 1957). Three replications of three light intensity plots of 480 footcandles, 3,490 footcandles and 7,120 footcandles were established by the construction of nine, 9 x 9 x 6-foot temporary greenhouses from lumber, lath, polyethylene sheet and muslin (fig. 3). These light intensities were measured at noon on clear days, at which time the light intensity in the open averaged 8,440 footcandles. Subplots of two available soil moisture ranges were established within each greenhouse, one from 0.6 to 4.3 inches (12 to 22 percent by weight), the other from 2.8 to 4.3 inches (18 to 22 percent by weight) within the 2-foot soil layer above the gravelly subsoil. The higher soil moisture level was close to the field capacity; the lower varied between near wilting and the field capacity. Within each soil moisture and light intensity treatment, sub-subplots of 20 weighed seedlings each of European larch, hazel, eastern white pine and Norway spruce were established in April 1957. Dogwood was seeded at a rate sufficient to insure 20 healthy seedlings per sub-subplot when thinned 1 month later.

Selection is the key to the whole operation: remove a healthy sucker
from the base of a fully grown cultivar. The sucker should have narrow,
sword-shaped leaves, with a pseudostem of 5 to 40 cm in height (sword
sucker), and the bulb should be free from traces of disease (no fringing
or traces of nematodes).visit: www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

Musa parasidiasca belongs to the natural order, plantaginaceae which contains more than 200 species, twenty-five or thirty of which have been reported. The common plantain (Plantango major) has broad, irregular oval leaves, abruptly contracted at the base into a long broad, channelled footstalk. The fully grown blade is 1.3–2.4 meters long and about two- third as broad, usually smooth, with several parallel veins : www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

θg) is the mass of water per mass of dry soil. It is measured by weighing a soil sample (mwet), drying the sample to remove the water, then weighing the dried soil (mdry). .. Volumetric Soil Moisture Content refers to the volume of water in a given volume of soil as discussed on previous pages. This type of Soil moisture Content is measured in m3.m-3 (so howmuchofacubic metre is water out of the entire cubic metre of soil sample). Alternately, the Volumetric Soil Moisture content can be referred to as a % of volume (which is much easier)

than 18 percent (472,000 acres) of the commercial forest area in Iowa is in nonstocked stands (Morgan and Compton 1956). These stands contain so little timber that they are not grouped in any acceptable saw timber, pole timber or seedling and sapling classification. The high density of undesirable shrubs and noncommercial tree species that invade these understocked areas precludes their use in timber production until a new stand is established. The inferior shrubs and tree species must be replaced through a combination of overstory-understory canopy removal and underplanting practices.

1. Do you have an empty land? if yes you are well positioned, it grows in all kinds of soil but best in a loamy soil
2. Prepare the soil by decomposing it with decaying plants, mulch etc., this is to protect the suckers from the harsh sun that may dehydrate it
3. Get plantain suckers from heathy plant and cut space them
4. In case you wish to add fertilizers, use very little and ensure they are mostly good NPK fertilizers.
5. Do not weed the plantain with any form of modern implement especially at their early stage of development, use mostly hand to weed so as not to harm the tender sucker
6. water them as may be needed

The success of the procedure depends on this stage. Note that the base of the plantain plant has a conical pseudostem formed by the leaf sheaths of its spirally arranged, long, thin leaves. Peeling involves remo-ving these leaf sheaths one by one. At the level of the bulb, there is a light-coloured band (the colour depends on the variety) that attaches each leaf sheath to the bulb; this is called the knot.

Plantains should always be weed-free. Weed control starts during field preparation. Weeds are initially controlled about every 6 to 8 weeks; but when the plantain canopy closes, about 5 to 6 months after planting, weed infestation declines due to shading. Any plant with a superficial root system should be considered a weed and therefore eliminated. Visit: www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

Molecular DNA-based markers are powerful tools for gaining insights into individual genetic characteristics, and for determining allele frequency. DNA markers were developed first for humans, then applied in plants, and subsequently for the analysis of the banana genome (Figure 2). This feature allows plant breeders to select only those individuals with desirable characteristics and significantly reduce the selection time.

The weeds are too much ....for herbicides to penetrate properly, kindly use man power to weed first and do not allow the weed to compete with the plantain as this will reduce the yield production.... After weeding please apply some fertilizer, and the after one week use glyphosate herbicides and never let it touches the leaves ....Contact us for more details

Any plant with a superficial root system should be considered a weed and therefore eliminated. Grasses or herbs are the most pernicious weeds because they derive their nutrients from the same level of the soil as the plantains.

Suckers are separated from their mother plant with a spade or machete. The sucker corm must not be damaged or chipped. Consequently the corm should be carefully peeled with a machete. The pseudo stem of the suckers should be cut off a few centimeters above the corm. Peeling of the corm delays the development of nematode infestation, while cutting of the pseudo stem reduces bulkiness and improves early growth of the newly planted sucker. The peeling process is just like that for cassava.
