All we gotta do is pray and hope. Because sincerely speaking, Africa can't control this on its own. This virus is bigger than even this country can handle. The moment Sawyer was allowed to step foot on Nigerian soil, the situation became dire.

Was watching CNN today and I could see the palpable fear in Liberia and Sierra Leone where the latter has declared a National State of Emergency and the former has shut schools and other government offices and ordered non essential workers to stay home.

The situation has become this bad cos some relatives are refusing to report the sick to hospitals, while some are even carrying out burials themselves. Illiteracy is helping the virus spread fast.

Initially, I didn't take this too serious, but it needs to be taken very very seriously. I work here in Abuja, but those that ccame in contact with Sawyer could be anywhere now. I believe the mnagement of that airline should have been arrested and tried. Bringing Sawyer into Lagos when he had already started showing symptoms was criminal.

The truth tho is that Nature is a 'Midwife and n Executioner'. I once read a book that the author laid down facts and figuress about the World's population and how it was growing too fast, especially here in Africa. He said that if not checked, the earth could implode under the weight.

Now over the years, nature has found a way to check population. The Black death, Spanish flu, the two world wars, HIV and so on.

To the conspiracy theorists who claim this particular deadly strain of Ebola is a creation of the West, well, they 'might' be right. Or it maybe that nature is about to check the worlds population once more, with a special focus on Africa. We can only prepare, hope, and pray.

Mod, please why can't this make front page, is the news not important or as usual you are behaving like lapdogs for politicians/ government and vetting what is acceptable for the front page.

This is a transnational health emergency and I am seriously ashamed at this bias. Well you own the site so who can complain. However, you render a social service and you should be a bit responsible

It will not make front page until it is confirmed.

For now it is just speculation.

Sierra Leone today declared a public health emergency to tackle the worst-ever outbreak of Ebola and will call in security forces to quarantine areas of the deadly virus.

President Ernest Bai Koroma said the measures resembled a tough anti-Ebola package announced by neighbouring Liberia last night.
Koroma also announced he was cancelling a visit to Washington for a U.S.-Africa summit next week because of the crisis.

The move came as world's premier health charity issued a grave warning about the likely spread of the deadly Ebola virus - an epidemic it fears 'can only get worse'.

Doctors Without Borders (aka Médecins Sans Frontières [MSF]) says the threat of the disease spreading beyond western Africa, where it was first detected in Guinea in February, is frighteningly real and said it was 'absolutely out of control'.

As usual we take things lightly & in a non-chalant manner in this country.
What is our federal & states government doing to create awareness.
Until it becomes serious that's when they will be running around like headless chicken, frothing from the mouth with the same information that they are on top of the situation.
Look at the europeans, their governments & media are already making huge plans & providing valuable information in case of any attack in the population.
We leave things to God. Heaven helps those who help themselves.

http://businessdayonline.com/2014/07/ncaa-starts-airport-screening-for-ebola/#.U9p7zoe9KSM

Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said on Thursday it had started temperature screening passengers arriving from places at risk from Ebola and had suspended pan-African airline Asky for bringing the first case to Lagos.

Ebola has been blamed for 729 deaths in Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, according to the World Health Organization. One died in Lagos, a crowded city of 21 million people with some of Africa’s worst sanitation and health care.

“Screening and monitoring is being done at all major international airports. It entails checking passengers’ temperatures with a hand-held machine,” NCAA spokesman Sam Adurogboye said, adding this meant for any journey that passed through Liberia, Guinea or Sierra Leone.

A compulsory blood test would follow if the passenger’s temperature gave cause for concern, he said.

International airlines association IATA said the WHO was not recommending any travel restrictions or border closures due to the outbreak, and says there would be a low risk to other passengers if an Ebola patient flew.

This is one of those sound-bites that will linger in my chit-scared sub-conscious mind for a good while to come.

There is something surreal about the twin perils facing Nigeria at this moment. From the north sweep marauding slave-raiders demanding forcible secession from the Nigerian federation, along with conquered territory to establish a fundamentalist Emirate pariah state occupying all land north of the Niger and Benue River confluence.

As the Nigerian army locks horns with the terrorist hordes running amok in the embattled nation's sandy northern reaches, a truly insidious microbe arrives in Lagos, the country's commercial capital in the south, by the convenience of jet travel, straight from Liberia, the very epicenter of Africa's most wide-spread epidemic of Ebola, an always-deadly pathogen first identified the Congolese jungle village of Ebola, way back in 1976.

Even an accomplished science-fiction horror story-writer could not have crafted a more compelling and utterly terrifying narrative than the one unfolding before the disbelieving eyes of the entire planet, right there in regular news bulletins aired on CNN, SKY and other media outlets, about the impending mass-extinction of an entire sub-continent's human population.

Caught between the advancing Boko Haram terror gang in the north the rampaging Ebola virus plague in the south, the decade that lies beyond 2014 will go down in history as BY FAR Nigeria's the most challenging and potentially catastrophic few years since the Biafran war that ended in 1970.

The head of the World Health Organization and leaders of West African nations affected by the Ebola outbreak are to announce a joint $100m (£59m; 75m euro) response plan.

They will meet in Guinea on Friday to launch the initiative aimed at tackling a virus which has claimed 729 lives.

Sierra Leone's president has declared a public health emergency over the outbreak after 233 people died there.

Hey I appreciate the compliment, Ishilove. I did at a point in my dark past work as a tech writer with an Orange County defense contractor, but that was quite a few moons ago back when men were men and dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Sometimes it seems like the more frightened a subject make me feel, the easier the words flow in a stream-of-consciousness manner ha ha.

The Anambra Commissioner of Health, Josephat Akabuike, announced on Thursday that a hospital has been sealed off and its workers and patients quarantined due to Ebola disease scare.
Briefing journalists in Awka, Ms. Akabuike said the measure followed information received by the government that a man whose body was brought back from Liberia at the weekend, might have died of the killer disease.

He said that information available to the government indicated that the body was brought back from Liberia through Lagos and deposited in the mortuary at Nkwelle-Ezenaka in Oyi Local Government of the state.

“Part of the briefing is to tell you what we are doing to make sure we don’t allow the deadly virus to come into the state.

“What actually called for this is that we have a report that a corpse was brought through Lagos and the deceased was said to have been taken from Liberia where of course you know there are cases of the disease.

“The corpse was said to have been brought to Nigeria and deposited somewhere in Nkwelle-Ezunaka and the ministry was alerted and that is why we are taking all these measures.”

The commissioner said that Governor Willie Obiano had already directed the Police Command in the state to cordon off the place until the necessary tests were carried out.

Things appear to be going from worse to worst as the deadly Ebola epidemic surges on. The CDC has issued a Level 3 - Avoid All Non-Essential Travel - warning.

At least three Americans have been infected; two are health care workers in an Ebola clinic. Affected districts include Bomi, Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, Montserrado (including the capital city of Monrovia), Margibi, and Nimba.

Instances of civil unrest and violence against aid workers have been reported in West Africa as a result of the outbreak.

The public health infrastructure is being severely strained as the outbreak grows.

CDC to send additional 50 experts to region in next 30 days.

Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Thursday that even in a best-case scenario, it could easily take three to six months to stem the epidemic in West Africa.

A British doctor fighting the devastating Ebola outbreak in west Africa has told how belief in witchcraft is hampering the fight to stop the spread of the deadly disease.

Benjamin Black, 32, a volunteer with the charity Médecins Sans Frontières in Sierra Leone, said that some of those in infected areas were not seeking medical treatment as they thought the disease was the work of sorcerers. Belief in witchcraft and traditional medicine is still prevalent in parts of west Africa, particularly the remote rural areas of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia where the outbreak has been concentrated.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Dr Black, who completed a four-day stint earlier this week at an Ebola treatment clinic in Kailahun, near Sierra Leone’s northern border with Guinea, said: “There is a section of population here who simply don’t believe Ebola is real, they think it is witchcraft and so they don’t come to the treatment centres.
Re: LATEST NEWS ON EBOLA OUTBREAK!!! by citizenisb: 10:57pm On Jul 31, 2014
Another problem, he added, was that the medics’ spaceman-like attire frightened locals.

In neighbouring Guinea, some village chiefs have barred medics from entering, claiming that they are actually spreading the disease. Other teams of doctors have been threatened by mobs with machetes.

“Many patients who come to us are already very sick by the time they do so, and so often all people see at the clinic is a doctor sticking a needle in someone for a blood test and then them dying shortly afterwards,” said Dr Black.

“That becomes a conspiracy theory that we are actually injecting them with something that kills them. There is a huge amount of work that needs to be done in terms of education on all this, otherwise this epidemic is just going to continue.”

The Federal Government has placed 69 persons who had first contact with the Liberian-born victim of Ebola Virus Disease, Patrick Sawyerr, on surveillance, while two persons have been quarantined, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said.

He also said government had not shut its borders for now, “except when it becomes necessary.”

According to him, the 69 persons will be under surveillance for a period of three weeks from the date of contact in line with the specifications of the World Health Organisation.
Re: LATEST NEWS ON EBOLA OUTBREAK!!! by citizenisb: 7:24am On Aug 01, 2014
“As a Federal Government policy, we have not closed our borders, unless it becomes necessary. But the Aviation Minister is working with us in many aspects to make sure that the virus does not spread.”

Chukwu also stated that that the virus “can be contacted on air even while airborne once you contact the droplets.”

The Minister said government was engaging the states right from the moment that the disease was first reported in Guinea.

“Our rapid response team is in Lagos. Nigeria has been commended by WHO. Secondary contacts are also important. We are working with the Cross River State government. We are not going to quarantine them but we have demanded for their contact details,” he stressed.

Chukwu also commended the hospital where the patient was managed saying, “We commend them for the great job they have done. They did everything to keep the man alive but unfortunately, he passed on. We have ordered the closure of the hospital.

The doctors are under surveillance, we are using WHO certified personal protective equipment. Doctors are at high risk but Nigerians should not panic.”

Two Americans in the fight of their lives against incurable Ebola will reportedly soon board a plane out of Liberia.

U.S. authorities are saying little about where Dr. Kent Brantly and hygienist Nancy Writebol will be taken once lifted out of disease-ravaged West Africa.

However, Atlanta's Emory University confirmed Thursday plans to house at least one of the victims--both of whom were said to be in 'grave condition'--once they arrive in the U.S. in a specially outfitted Gulfstream jet.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-07-31/what-going-happen-if-ebola-comes-america

The moment CNN reported a plane was leaving the United States to pick up the American volunteers in Liberia suffering from Ebola, Twitter lit up with Americans fuming over the decision.

Many were unable to understand why the patients couldn't simply be treated in Liberia.

'Is it necessary that this person come to the U.S.? Can't this be done other there? Ego trip?' tweeted @1ronweed.

Still others were simply thankful the patient or patients were being taken to Georgia.

'Thank god I don't live in Atlanta,' tweeted @TheMadPatriot.

So should we be worried?

Not if the CDC's best-there-is containment systems and procedures work as they are supposed to.

The patient or patients will be housed in an area of Emory's hospital that is physically separate from other patient areas, according to CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

And inside the air will be filtered and none no staff will have any physical contact whatsoever with an infected patient outside of specialized hazmat-like suits.

However, the move also comes soon after the CDC's recent string of reported mishandlings of other dangerous pathogens--namely athrax and influenza--made headlines--made headlines and even forced the resignation of the head of the government lab that potentially exposed workers to live anthrax.

Fhuck No!!

The Nigga apparently fell sick upon arrival whilst waiting to clear immigrations. They fast tracked his clearance process and took the Nigga to the hospital in Obalende where the Doctor put two and two together and made the best hypothesis based on his symptoms and country of origin and diagonosed him with Ebola.

By this time, all the Niggas who arrived with his ass had cleared immigrations, grabbed their bags and gone home.
The Niggas who helped the sick man (from Air host/esses, trolley guys, Airport attendants, airport taxis, etc) were also not quarantined. The aircraft that brought that Ebola Nigga in reloads and flies more niggas out of Nigeria.

Now you would think that tracking down the passengers on that flight would be easy and the number 1 priority of the Government with an aim to containing the situation and isolating all those that may have come into contact with them.. But NOO! News reports say the government cant get the Flight manifest from the Airlines. What about immigrations?! Didnt they all fill and submit the arrival cards?! Werent their passports scanned upon entry?!

The government can hide from Boko Haram.. But Ebola?! FHUCK NO!

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-08-01/american-ebola-patients-way-atlanta-hospital-customs-heightened-alert-ill-passengers

Two American healthcare workers, described as in 'grave condition and worsening' are being infected by the Ebola virus are on their way to Atlanta's Emory University Hospital for treatment. As WSBTV reports, the hospital has a separate isolation unit set up in partnership with the CDC to treat serious infectious diseases.

CDC officials have called this "the biggest and most complex Ebola outbreak in history." Sentiment across social media appears rather biased towards the negative on bringing the patients back. As we warned last night, there are significant implications should Ebola come to America.

We also note that while the CDC is not screening airline passengers, customs and border agents are on heightened alert for 'people with flu-like symptoms."
