Girls do eat it in canteen but it depends on which type of canteen you are talking about.

If it is the very local canteen(buka) girls don't like eating their because...

1. They are forming posh and classy.

2. The environment is a mess, unhygienic, they prefer buying the food it with their flask and go elsewhere.

3. They dont want to be seen as lazy girls who can't cook.

I am sure you have 'ladies' in your family. What is stopping you from asking them why they choose not to eat in a canteen? by the way, I don't know where the heck you are located at but in Abuja, you see ladies eating in bukas and canteens all the time. Considering that the average Nigerian-bred male is always looking for the slightest reason to tear down his female counterparts, I won't blame those ladies who choose not to eat in canteens often. After all, no be Naija again? The same country that thinks that every lady who is not oyibo and lodging in a hotel is an ashawo. Who knows, tomorrow people like you might say the lady cannot cook or is not wife-material and that is why she is seen eating in a canteen or buka all the time. You know Nigerian women can never win in Nigerian society. They are damned if they do and they are damned if they don't.

Speaking for myself, and if your definition of canteen is the type you sit on some dirty long benches and face one another like its a large family house with stainless plates being used to serve and some dirty, irritating jug and handtowel dangling in your face you as you settle to eat, then count me out. It is not shyness but I get irritated easily with those kinda settings and won't be never be caught in such a setting again. My first time in one of those kinda canteen, the person I went with regretted taking me there cos I just could not stand the environment and dislike eating in stainless or plastic bowls outside my home. I think Most females would rather do their cooking at home than settle to eat in those kinda canteens.

If you are referring to a decent and neat restaurant where you at least get to sit on a decent chair with at most 4 people at a table and get served in ceramic plate, you can count me in

1. I think its poverty.

They mostly cant afford healthy balanced food.

For example, a restaurant at my workplace, ladies always come with their plates. They buy foods in their plates and take it to one corner to devour.

They dont want people to see the quality of food they are eating.

The funny side of it is, those that eat at restaurants eat good foods. It means they can afford good food. Trust me ladies like to show off. If they can afford good food, they will gladly eat openly.

They will even take selfie photoshoot of it. LOL

2. Eating habits. Most of them form class in the public but are from raw background. Fear of exposure. A lady from a raw home forming posh in public wont eat in the public due to fear of her getting exposed.
