National Cake and African Time

These two concepts have cropped into our national life and is taking a negative toll on Nigeria. This is a discussion on them and let us explore these concepts and suggest possible solutions.

Here are some of the areas you could consider (pick any):
- When did it originate in Nigeria?
- What are they? (Try explaining what they are)
- How common are these? Any examples?
- Can it be eliminated?
- Suggest possible solutions.

Have your say.

African Time
The way we manage time in Nigeria, it will be difficult to imagine that Nigeria was colonized by Britain, a country well known for its regards to being prompt and adhering to time. When the British where here, the culture of Time-Keeping was very important.

Today, people will invite you to a 10.00am event and even at 12noon, you will hardly see anyone there. Even the organizers will be still running around to start. Sadly even government functions takes the same trend.

The concept of "African Time" is killing productivity and is collectively hampering our potentials. (Do other African countries have this same challenge?).

The first time you are actually making sense on nairaland and I urge you to keep it up.
Back to the topic, it's very difficult to state precisely when the two concepts originated but then the two are products of corruption in Nigeria which has eaten deep into the fabrics of national life. While none is good but the concept and idea behind national cake is worse, even worse than ebola. People no longer see call to national duty as a call to serve but a call to participate in the sharing of national cake. People get into govt with the sole aim of getting as much as they can from the coffers of the state in the little time they get to spend and it's even more annoying seeing them brag about it and people worship them.
The thing with African time is that nobody wants to be the first at an occasion and wait for others, everyone wants everyone to wait for him. I remember when we were in school back in the late 90s and we wont always like to be the first to arrive at school upon resumption. We would always ask whether people have started arriving and whether lectures have started, very funny. How are lecturers supposed to start when you are still at home, will the lecturers teach the empty classrooms.

National Cake
This is the concept and the believe that once you are close to the seat of power, you are entitled to divide and share what is available. A lot of government assets and policies are auctioned to family members, interests and proxies that hold them in trust for those in power.

The National Cake ideology does not encourage competence as beneficiaries are not considered on how competent or if they are ever qualified. This has become the face of corruption in Nigeria. It is so widespread and cuts across of imaginable lines in the nation. It has no boarder, be it religion, ethnicity, class, location, political parties, status, language, state, etc.

Some of the example I can imagine include:
- Legislators seating the chambers doing nothing and squandering all manner of salaries, benefits and even money that should go to their constituents.
- Government officials hyper-inflating budgets, contract fees, getting kickbacks from contracts at very ridiculous percentages, etc.
- Stealing public utilities to sell and re-awarding the contracts to themselves.
