Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool face the first of two extremely testing away fixtures in a row, with Tottenham away on Sunday after the trip to City.

The Reds are currently a third of the way to replicating last season’s quick start and they will be looking to build on the nervy opening weekend success over Ronald Koeman’s new-look Southampton side with an improved performance and consecutive win that would throw down an early season marker for the rest of the Premier League.

It was vitally important that Liverpool came away from last Sunday’s match with maximum points ahead of two challenging matches, but the Reds travel up the M62 knowing that they can prove to be more than a match for Manuel Pelligrini’s side when thinking back to last season’s thrilling encounters.

The corresponding fixture last season on Boxing Day saw Liverpool undeservedly leave the Etihad empty handed, but also pick up many plaudits after producing a hugely impressive performance in a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Philippe Coutinho slotted the Reds in front after a fantastic move, but City turned the deficit around thanks to goals from Vincent Kompany and Alvaro Negredo before half time, in a game that will be remembered for the infamous offside decision that prevented Raheem Sterling from running through, rounding Joe Hart and scoring, when the 19-year-old was shown to be quite clearly two yards onside.

Team News

Mario Balotelli’s arrival at Anfield hasn’t been completed in time for him to make what would have been a dramatic debut against the side with which he won the Premier League in 2012.

The key questions for Rodgers involve whether to give Alberto Moreno his debut at left-back, and whether Joe Allen or Emre Can should replace Lucas Leiva in midfield.

Despite returning to light training last week, Adam Lallana continues to be sidelined for match action by the knee injury that he picked up on the clubs’ pre-season tour of the US.

Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini are very unlikely to be in the squad as they recover from injuries and sort out their footballing futures at the same time.

However, positive injury news comes in the return to fitness of exciting Serbian Lazar Markovic, who Rodgers confirmed would be available for the clash after recovering from an on-going niggling injury, and he is set to go straight into the squad for the match.

BR: Lazar Markovic is back in the squad for Monday. Adam Lallana is in the latter stages of his rehabilitation.

— This Is Anfield (@thisisanfield) August 22, 2014

Last Sunday’s opener against Southampton proved to come too early for new left-back Moreno, whose move from Sevilla was held up by a delay in finalising paper work, and he could go straight in to Rodgers’ starting XI, replacing Glen Johnson who filled the left-back void against the Saints.

Allen will be knocking on the door for a start after the Welshman produced a much better performance in the half an hour he played than the man he replaced in the midfield on Sunday afternoon, Lucas Leiva, who was surprisingly included from the start.

Opposition

The two sides have already met once this season – on the clubs’ respective warm-up tours of the US – where Liverpool ran out winners on penalties after 90 minutes – which featured goals from Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling – finished 2-2.

Pelligrini’s men have entered the new season with the very clear objective of defending the Premier League title and they started that defence well last Sunday as they picked up from where they left off last year, by recording a 2-0 win in what turned out to be a tricky fixture away at Newcastle thanks to goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

The City boss handed a debut in last weekend’s game to midfield engine Fernando, who joined in the summer from Porto for a fee reported to be £12million, but fellow new boy Eliaquim Mangala missed out as Pelligrini declared the powerhouse centre-back “not yet ready” for the trip to Tyneside.

The £32million French international is set to miss out on Monday night’s exciting encounter – a game in which Aguero will be pushing for a starting berth in – after the Argentinian came on to replace Edin Dzeko and score the second goal, wrapping the game up at St James’ Park.

At City. Pellegrini says Mangala ‘needs more time’ and probably won’t play v Liverpool. Rest of the squad available, except for Negredo. — Rob Dawson (@RobDawsonMEN) August 22, 2014

The match will be shown on Sky Sports 1 in the second Monday Night Football of the season and Reds everywhere will be hoping that the match – that kicks off at 8pm – produces a second consecutive away win.

Manchester City will play Liverpool in
the next fixture in the Premier League
campaign at The Etihad Stadium this
weekend.
Premier League: Manchester City
Vs Liverpool
Date: 25th August
Time: 19:00 GMT
Venue: Etihad Stadium
Manchester City are scheduled to meet
Liverpool in the second match of the new
Premier League campaign. The match to be
played at the Etihad Stadium was one of the
key games in the previous season and will
have its mark at the final matches of this
season too.
Manchester City registered a quite easy win
against Newcastle United in the last game
that they played to kick start the fresh season
of the Premier League. Manchester City were a
goal up at the half time following a beautiful
buildup of Dzeko and David silva. Finally,
Aguero came off the bench to double the lead
at the the second half.
Liverpool, on the other hand, had a tough time
playing against the saints. Liverpool made a
narrow win off the saints as they beat them
with a scoreline of 2-1. Sterling opened the
score for Liverpool and the travelling side then
equalized by a goal from Clyne in the second
half. Finally, the goal scored by Sturridge, who
was quite a hidden man in the pitch all the
game, meant a win for the Reds.
Manchester City had a very tough travels the
previous season as they lost most of their
points away. Manchester City lost to
Sunderland, Cardiff and even with Norwich
when they traveled. The win in the first game
in an away fixture will be a positive start for
Pellegrini’s men.
Brenden Rodgers will have a challenge coming
in the early fixture at the home of the
Manchester giants as they look forward to
take a revenge of a very narrow win Man City
edged in the fixture last season at Etihad.
Liverpool also lost the race against the
Manchester giants last season falling sort
only be a couple of points. Liverpool will have
a lot to prove coming into this game and a
win here would mean a very crucial 3 points
that could be the difference at the end of the
season.
Manchester City has the only concern of injury
over the defensive department as Zabaleta and
Sagna do not seem totally fit coming into the
game. The only positive thing Pellegrini has
that can solve the problem is the position
being filled by Clichy and playing Kolarov at
the left back position. Aguero seems to slowly
catch the rhythm in the game and Jovetic and
Dzeko look very comfortable up front. This will
be a good sign for the home side.
Liverpool has lost their star Suarez but the
likes of Sterling and Sturridge in the team is
never an easy way out for the opponents.
Liverpool will come into this fixture with a very
fit squad filled with very talented youngsters.
Coutinho and Stirling are the best young
players in the league and are looking very
great from the first game. The addition of
Lambert in the team with a depth in the
midfield will ensure a veru strong performance
in the game.
Liverpool will miss Agger, Ilori, O. Assaidi, J.
Flanagan and A. Lallana in the match against
the defending champions. The only sure
absentee for Manchester City will be Negredo
who will miss a lot more fixtures with the
broken metatarsals.
Both the teams will be going for a victory in
the game but a draw will also be satisfying for
the managers.

Team News
Summer signings Lazar Markovic and Alberto
Moreno are in contention to make debuts in
Liverpool's Barclays Premier League clash
with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium
on Monday. Fit-again winger Markovic and
defender Moreno, recruited last week from
Sevilla, are both set to be included in the
squad for the match but fellow summer arrival
Adam Lallana's wait to make his bow
definitely goes on, with the midfielder not
quite ready yet as his rehabilitation from a
knee injury nears its conclusion. Jose
Enrique's condition will be assessed, while
Daniel Agger, Jon Flanagan and Oussama
Assaidi remain sidelined.
Match Notes
Sorry to disappoint, but Mario Balotelli won’t
be playing. Moving on, the main title
protagonists from last season meet far too
early in this one, neither likely to be at full
throttle. City look in good shape to defend
their crown, Liverpool were rusty and edgy
against Southampton in their opening day
victory. While the cameras try to locate
Balotelli, Liverpool supporters will be
assessing Dejan Lovren. This is the type of
fixture where he must add solidity and
organisation.
Stat of the game: 2 - Manchester City have
scored exactly two goals in each of their last
four Premier League games against Liverpool.
Chris Bascombe's prediction : 1-1
Re: Manchester City Vs Liverpool (3 - 1) ON 25th August 2014 by luvola(m): 11:29am On Aug 24, 2014
How to solve a
problem like
Manchester City?
Liverpool take on Manchester City this
Monday, in what promises to be the
biggest fixture of the opening two
weeks of Premier League football
TOM DOWAN
A look at where Liverpool vs.
Manchester City will be won and lost
This week's Monday Night Football
places last seasons league champions
against the eventual runners up, so
how do LFC beat the mega-rich
Manchester City?
There is of course no formula for beating
any team, football is played on an
unpredictable pitch and not on paper.
Liverpool vs Manchester City will
however provide a series of mini battles
that will be key to victory, games within
a game if you will - but what are these
fundamental components to putting
together a victory against the sky blues
this Monday evening?
The diamond
If there was one thing to be taken from
the opening day of the season, it was
that a Gerrard-Lucas pivot does not
work and likely never will. A lack of
legs and defensive know-how in midfield
saw Jose Fonte (of all people) gallop
through the LFC midfield, while James
Ward-Prowse looked like Messi for an
afternoon.
The lack of Liverpool midfield went
relatively unpunished against the Saints;
this certainly will not be the case
against the likes of Yaya Toure,
Fernando & Fernandinho - a formidable
midfield set up. In order to combat the
presence that City will undoubtedly
bring, Rodgers may choose to revert to a
diamond and thus increase midfield
presence. With the Balotelli deal not yet
complete, LFC would likely pair Raheem
Sterling with Daniel Sturridge as the
striking duo and therefore a midfield of
Coutinho, Henderson, Can or Allen &
Gerrard could be played - physicality
and energy to counteract the driving
force that is Manchester City's midfield.
The diamond certainly seems the way to
go in order to maintain some control of
the tempo and protect the back-four on
Monday night.
Fullbacks
While the diamond will bring some
more control to the side, it'll also
restrict the offensive width of the team;
this is where fullbacks become critical.
Reds fans will be hoping that Alberto
Moreno makes his Liverpool debut after
the paperwork was not completed in
time to face Southampton & that Javier
Manquillo continues his impressive start
to life at Liverpool FC - of course these
two starting is based on the assumption
that Glen Johnson will be dropped,
however that is an assumption made by
many.
The young Spaniards are both,
undoubtedly, the best option for the club
and could prove to be fundamental to
any potential success this season -
against City on Monday night their
influence will be pivotal.
Moreno and Manquillo will have to
compensate for the lack of width that a
diamond causes. Overlapping the attack,
thus dragging opposition defenders out of
position and therefore creating space for
the attackers will be key to build up play
and transition. Both fullbacks will also
have to bring a 'physical output' to the
table by delivering that final ball once
they've got themselves into the
aforementioned position and competent
passing in order to contribute to the neat
and tidy build up play that Rodgers
craves. Moreno and Manquillo will also
constantly have to make themselves
available for the Gerrard cross-field
diagonal ball that is so often used to
stretch opposition and subsequently
catch them on the break - there's a lot
for both to do!
Defensively, fullbacks will also be key to
success vs the Manchester sky blues.
With the abundance of creativity that
City posses, the likes of David Silva and
Nasri will need to be stifled. Blocking
the pinpoint accurate crosses we will no
doubt witness from City's creative outlets
will be necessary to protecting the
central defensive pairing and hopefully
restricting the City striking duo.
Physicality will also be needed, the City
magicians will want to cut inside and
contribute to the shot tally - this needs
to be stopped.
The Liverpool fullbacks will have a lot
of work to get through against City, their
input and output could sway the result.
No fear
You can't 'think' how to beat a team, and
Liverpool certainly shouldn't attempt to
do so!
Attacking fluidity and a no fear attitude
became synonymous with Brendan
Rodgers' Liverpool last season and that
should not be lost regardless of who the
opponent is.
Liverpool will certainly have to deal
with City, but City will have to deal with
Liverpool and that is noon get an easy
task. Markovic should play some part
and that will add depth and further
flexibility to the current free flowing
crop - if the midfield allow the attack to
be fluid, we are in for an exciting
contest. Coutinho will have to be magic
in his creativity, Sterling fearless in his
running and Sturridge clinical - this is a
concoction we have witnessed in full
flow, it will have to be potent once
again.
It must be remembered that this is not a
season definer but only the second fixture
of the term; however, it would be naive to
think that the psychological aspect of last
seasons runners up vs. last seasons
champions is not significant. Let the
games begin!
